My desktop/Laptop just updated its Nvidia drivers. Nvidia said it would help to play games like Alan Wake, Operation Racoon city, & so on.

Now I was just curious, will these updates only help newer games or will these updates also help older games? 2 or 3 updates ago I played Borderlands on medium settings, does this mean I can now play Borderlands on High settings & not see any frame drops? I'm currently playing Alan Wake so I haven't tried it.

Thanx a lot guys!!!

I'd like to say 1st that every time I ask a question here, everyones comments are always so helpful. So thanx.

Now I just bought Dead island on PC, And every time I install it hangs (the meter stops moving) then a CRC (Cyclic redundacy check) warning pops up. After which I'm given 3 choices

Abort

Try again (recomended)

Ignore (not recomended)

I tried the try again several times, to no avail. so I tried ignore & it finished installing. I played the game, even got to finish it, but when I tried to play a LOCAL LAN (no internet) I couldn't find my desktop or laptop (tried both) even turned off the anti virus.

There is a local LAN on Dead island right? Could it be the CRC that I ignored? Or is it STEAM thats giving me trouble cause the internet is off?

Thanx again guys,

60 fps requires higher performance (and more work from your PC) than 30 fps.

It won't make it overheat less, but it might make it overheat more.

And no, games usually don't have setting to change the framerate, they run as fast they can, up to the limit of what your monitor can support (usually 60Hz or 60 frames.)

the_bi99man

RE5,Ghost busters,DMC4 have the choice to switch FPS. When I use unlock FPS on RE5, the FPS goes as high as 120FPS, I'm just afraid it might blow up (IF over FPS could cause over heating, cause I dont know, that was my question.). My other question was would it ruin the playability if I put it on a lower FPS? Thanx for all the replies.

Umm. So, basically, you want your framerate high. If it's dropping, that's because your computer is struggling, and not able to push out the graphics at a fast pace. I think most people here thought you were referring to some kind of in-game option where you could actually set an exact level for your framerate, which is not something I've heard of, as your framerate depends on how well your system handles the current graphics options setup. Some games may have an option to turn off a limiter, which is what I think you're talking about with RE5, and in that case, I don't think it would do damage, but it wouldn't really do anything, either. If your system is running a game well enough to get framerates that seem smooth, then don't worry about it. If your system is running a game well enough that it CAN get to really high framerates, then you might actually want to leave the limiter on, because it's probably just keeping the framerate in time with your monitor's refresh rate, which is probably 60hz (60fps). If your framerate goes over what your monitor is supposed to display, I don't think it can damage anything, but it won't look any better, and may even create visual glitches.

The point is, a change from 30fps to 60fps is a result of your pc performance, not the other way around.

Oh, ok. Re5 has 3 choices 30, 60, & unlockable, I tested RE5's benchmark when I placed the setting on 60, it was still going as high as 80, so basically this setting means nothing. For Ghostbusters my PC is 60ON while the 30 is OFF a noticed it was a little glitch, so will putting it on 30 ON and 60 OFF make it perform better. I'll try it out anyways but Thanx for the replies guys.

Now I know in games the lower the graphic detail the better your PC games performs, same for lowering the shadow detail, tuning off the AA, all this helps the games performance while reducing quality.

Is it the same for the 30fps to 60fps? Does changing this make a diffrence in performance? Will my PC over heat less on 30fps then 60fps?

Thanx in advance to any reply.

You're going to have to spend closer to $1000 to get a "gaming" laptop.

simardbrad

I believe I said it doesn't have to be GREAT... I have to take in to account that I HAVE A LIFE outside of PC gaming. So I'm SACRIFICING playing games on high settings just to get a laptop thats dependable & doesn't breaK DOWN EASY.

I use the MSI GX740... don't know what your MSI's problem was, this one is very capable.

MSI cards tend to overclock on the core very well. For example, my 5870 is capable of 920/1085 clocks, compared to base of 700/1000. That's a lot more than some of the other GPUs.

If you want the very best performance though, get the M18X from Alienware with 2x6990M.

How do I stop it from overclocking exactly? My old laptops (the MSI) graphics card was Radeon HD 5470. I also so an ASUS laptop for $720, its spec were: Intel core I5 2410M 2GD DDR3 500GB SATA Nvidia GF 540(1GB) There was a cheaper version of this ASUS laptop for just $600 Intel core I5 450M 2GB DDR3 320 SATA Nvidia GF 310M (1G) I don't need the Laptop to be GREAT, I just want to be able to play ALL PC games on MEDIUM settings. Can those 2 Asus laptops or the HP & Acer laptops (I posted earlier) do that? Thanx again everyone, this is really insightful.

@simardbrad I tried for half an hour to find out how to make the poll and I couldn't find it, at some site it should just be up there. Back to topic. It seems most people choose ASUS. But what do you guys think about HP? I saw this HP laptop for $800 it's specs are: Intel core I5-2410M 4GB DDR3 (2x2) upgradable to 8GB 640GB SATA Radeon HD 6470 M 1GB DDR3 I also so an ACER for $700 its specs are: Intel core I5-2410M 2GB DDR3 640GB SATA nVidia GeForce GT 540M 2048MB DDR3 dedicated. Which one do you guys think is better for its price? Again thanx to everyone.
