I must admit, ever since I bought the Wii, I haven't been much of a gamer. Though the Wii was pretty good, compared to past Nintendo systems, it was kind of a let down for me. For Wii 2, I think Nintendo might be able to do a much better job in terms of games of very high quality, if given that their hardware is able to compete with top of the line gaming systems. I had long thought that games like Zelda would be much better suited for hardwares at the top of the line quality because Zelda/Mario/Metroidare the kinds of games that sets new standards for gaming, period. That's why I think if Nintendo does release a high end hardware, even if the sales are bad with the casual consumers, they could potentially set new gaming standards once again. If they do, they might just have a game that can be called the "Ocarina of Time of our era".

3D is a gimmick, HD was not.

That's just one opinion, and you may not remember that everyone was not enthusiastic about HD when it first came out as well.

I believe I am correct when I say that when HD first came out, when motion sensing first came out, many people were critisizing it for being a gimmicky novelty that will wear off in just a few months. Now look at where we are... HD is the standard of television (no going back), motion sensing everyone wants (Playstation Move, Microsoft Kinetic). Its hard to not see the same pattern happening to the 3D industry and how it could impact games.

your welcome

Someone writes something with alot of thought put into it, and people like you just trash all over it by saying things that are irrelevant. If you didn't want to read it, why did you even bother to post?

I have always been a Nintendo gamer at heart, and I gotta say, The Legend of Zelda OOT IS THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME. With that said, as we get ready for the future by the 3DS and the possible launch of next gen consoles by 3 big gaming companies, (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft) with companies like Apple starting to take interest in gaming, the future looks complicated. Though Nintendo has had alot of problems in the past with N64, and the Gamecube, when the new Nintendo president was introduced, I had hoped that all of this would change. He touted a change in the strategy of Nintendo by the Blue Ocean strategy and introduced various innovative marketing by selling his products not by reducing their price, but by bundling it with softwares they could try out. Instead of traditional method of marketing by television ads, he gave the products to famous movies stars so that they may spread the word. Sales skyrocketed and competitors copied his methods with products like Move and Kinect (though Kinect is not a direct copy, the overall concepts are the same as the Wii's motion sensing) even while drinking to their own bitter tears. With the recent launch of the 3DS, though many were enthusiastic by it (some were not), however,I was skeptical. The problem is that Nintendo is still following the same strategy as they had before and innovating on their ownwithout taking a realistic assessment of the current market situation. Though Nintendo makes one of the most unique games as a company, in this business, all that matters is money and without it, they will not survive.

One company that I think has strong grasp on the future of gaming is Apple; whether by accident, by plan, or whether if they realized it or not. If Apple gets more serious into the gaming business, I believe that Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft will have serious competition in their hands if not already. Instead of trying to innovate, create better graphics, or sell Blu-Rays and DVDs, Apple uses their online store to sell their games through their portable machines. These games are cheap, easy to get into, and lack depth. For mass consumers who are too busy to play games, these types of games are what they are looking for. Therefore, I believe this is where the market is headed towards: to games played on a useful portable machine developed by garage developers of games that are cheap, easy, and accessible anywhere by the mass market. Though games with depth such as Zelda, Halo, Assasin's Creed, COD, GTA, etc., will have their place in the future, large companies like Apple will most likely create a market for garage developers who will thrive and compete against one another on what I call the "Garbage Games". Although we have dreamed and hoped for a future of virtual reality where we would plug ourselves into the Matrix to live in our gaming world, a more realistic assessment allows us to see that in 2050, we would see a child playing "Angry Birds 10" on their Apple iPhone GX8.

I just said on my previous post that though it has been around, the technology has gotten to the point of 1) affordability, 2) strong quality. Why do you think multi billion dollar companies are suddenly onboard to support it now?

Nowadays, when I go searching online for 3d, I hear some "forward-thinkers" always saying negative stuff about 3d even though they may not have tried one themselves. The thing that I hear the most often is of how they think 3d is a gimmick or a fad, just as HD was a gimmick, or how motion sensing was a gimmick. True, though 3d has been around for a while, the technology has finally gotten to the point where it is not only affordable, but the quality of the tech itself do add new dimensions to various applications including gaming. Therefore, I think 3d will thrive and eventually become a standard for gaming and Nintendo 3ds will be the standard for portable gaming.

What I would like from the new Zelda:

  • Strategic dismemberment, Dead Space styIe. Well, not quite, but it would be nice to use the motion plus in a strategic way to fight enemies, adding a bit of challenge in dispatching them.
  • Seasons. Ocarina of Time amazed me with its night to day transition, and the importance of it. They should do the same thing with a seasonal system that really helps the game feel long and epic.
  • You know how the NES title drops you into a big world, and lets you loose to discover everything about it? I would like that. Hidden, interlinking dungeons and areas that you can approach in any way you wish.
  • Related to the above, lots of sidequests with important results.
  • Do away with heart pieces and instead incorporate RPG-lite features, some of which can be found in Zelda II. Have the abilitiy to grow link proportional to the enemies he has fought and triumphed over.
  • Voice over work for everyone except Link, who should forever remain a silent everyman.
  • An art styIe that is consistent, and does not conflict with itself, as Twilight Princess did.
  • A return to form in terms of theme; something as deep and mature as Majora's Mask, or Links Awakening.
  • A truly Vertical world. The mountains and sky temple were nice in Twilight Princess, but the whole world would work much better as the inside of a sphere, with many layers of complexity to explore. The series has been edging towards this.
  • A more populated world, with lots of memorable NPCs.

Those are some really great ideas. I've always thought that Zelda could use season changes which would change the entire gameplay over course of seasons. I like the idea of more populous world (hopefully a big city like the ones found in GTA... oh no i didn't just say that), but at the same time, a country feel to it by having open fields where you can get away from the city.
