I was on wikipedia looking at their lists of banned and controversial books, when I saw a book that really suprised me, The Lorax by Dr. Seuss.
I read the summary and realized why, it's about anti- deforestation, one character known as the Once-ler has clear cut a forest of Truffula trees so that he can make Tnheeds ("It's a shirt. It's a sock. It's a glove. It's a hat. But it has other uses. Yes, far beyond that. You can use it for carpets. For pillows! For sheets! Or curtains! Or covers for bicycle seats." ). After cutting down the first Truffula tree the Lorax appears and tries to convince the Once-ler to stop, but to no sucess. In the end the Once-ler realizes that he was wrong, but only after clear cutting the forest and driving the animals that lived there away.
I read the story about 20 minutes ago and saw what Seuss was saying, I totally missed the meaning of the story when I read it when I was little. I can't believe that it was banned in some areas in the U.S., do you know why? It's because it is anti- forest industry, I can't believe that they banned it! I think that everyone should just read it and if they did and took the meaning of the story to heart, we would not be causing the harm to the enviroment that we are now.
And to make things worse, the logging industry published a book that basically says that logging is good, it's called the Traux. I can't believe that they would auctually publish this, it really gets me mad that they could auctually print this, and to tell kids that de- forestation is okay......
I didn't mean to go on such a tirade with this post, but I had to say this because the destruction of our enviroment makes me sick, I realize that we need trees and wood to live the way we do but there is no need to clear cut every forest on the planet. The logging companies plant seeds for the trees they cut down, but it's not like those seeds are going to grow back to the trees that were cut down overnight.
Here's a link to the evil propoganda that the logging industry calls a childrens book, The Traux
A motto we should all live by
