I understand that in the end the console with the most sales win the console war, but I just don't understand THIS EARLY...why do people keep comparing NPD sales charges and whatnot this early this gen? Won't these systems be selling for 5+ years? Is sales really relevant 6 months into it? I can understand a yearly report, but I think its been getting kinda ridiculous lately. Won't the winner of this gen most likely be the console with the biggest, best, most diverse library? Why don't we talk more about that?shsonline
In a lot of ways, the sales figures now are a lot more important than the sales figures say, two years from now.
Early momentum is key for any platform. Almost never in the history of game consoles has a console managed to catch up and pass a rival with a head-start. The only exception that readily springs to mind is the SNES's narrow victory over the Genesis.
With regards to current events, every month that Wii outsells PS3 in NA, it increases its lead. If existing sales trends continue for as little as another six months, it will create a nigh-insurmountable lead for the Wii over the PS3.
I mean it. Sales two years from now are not going to turn things around for the PS3 in any scenario that doesn't involve Ninja assassination of all Microsoft and Nintendo executives as well as tactical military strikes on their production facilities.
Game publishers reduce the decision to develop and publish a game to a mathematical formula. One of the primary variables of this formula is the install base of any given platform. Maximizing this number as early as possible is the most ironclad way for a platform to ensure that it will get the biggest, best, most diverse library.
The PS3 will not approach the sort of dominance that PS2 enjoyed with regards to its software library under any rational scenario.
