AMD Radeon HD 5550 (320 SPs) smacks AMD Xenos.

AMD Radeon HD 6570M (400 SPs) ~= Radeon HD 5730M (400 SPs) ~= Radeon HD 5570 (400 SPs) Desktop. These GPU models are part of AMD's "TeraScale 2" design.

great, thanks for the input.

the wii u's GPU should smoke xenos.

is this good or badEmperorZeruel

not sure yet!

just trying to get an idea of the very MINUMUM possible capabilities of the wii u's GPU.

the very minimum it can run at seems to be that of the low end Radeon HD 5000 series. question i want to know from a PC gamer is how well does that perform compared to the 360?

I can see why though. It would be embarrassing to price controllers at $300. This way Ninty sells it as a feature by calling the controller the "focal point" and not design failure.

But the controller has no internal hardware. It's not going to be nearly as expensive as people are saying. Also, on what planet would NINTENDO release a 300 DOLLAR CONTROLLER. It makes no sense.

Is this a joke? Whats inside? Twizzlers?

it uses the wii U's GPU remotely. only hardware needed is what is already used in controllers, + a display port + touch screen capabilities.

This does not match up with this:

[quote="Katsuya Eguchi"]"We're considering our options with maybe two screens," Eguchi told Kotaku, who said he considers multiple New Controller games to be "an interesting idea." That would mean games that used two new Wii U controllers. Eguchi's five-player prototype, here at E3, has one person using a new controller and four other people using Wii Remote-Nunchuck combos.Cheese-Muffins

http://kotaku.com/5809706/nintendo-looking-into-games-that-support-two-new-controllers

So I think we need to just calm down for now and wait for somethign more official. Only CVG is reporting this, so it might just be misheard info.

they should be able to use 2 controllers.

the Radeon HD GPUs (officially what wii u's GPU is based on) can output at the very minimum 3 displays simultaneously - two for the controllers, one for the tv.

It has been confirmed that the Wii U GPU will be made by AMD and is custom made based on the AMD Radeon HD brand. We also know that is has multi-display functionality.

Since multi-display functionality was introduced starting with the Radeon HD 5000 series, we can probably conclude the Wii U GPU is based on the 5000 or 6000 series.

Can anyone provide some insight into how the lowest end Radeon HD 5000 series GPU stacks up to the 360 Xenos (Xenos is based ATi's X1900/X1950 series)? Because that seems to be the very minimum spec that the Wii GPU can possibly run at. Sorry if this is obvious, but I know next to nothing about this stuff!

makes sense

the controller will directly use the wii u's GPU remotely for it's display. this will have 2 display outputs - one for the TV screen and the other for the controller. this is why the controller can display almost exactly what is on the TV screen at the same time. adding more controlers will require more display outputs. adding more display outputs will require more from the GPU, and there is no way nintendo can design for this flexibility beforehand (unless they force everybody spend a but load more just to potentially use more controllers).

JB730

actually, i gotta say now that i believe nintendo will be releasing TWO controllers with its console.

why?

a.) the bottleneck that determines how many controllers one can use at the same time is the system's GPU

b.) we know the wii u GPU is made by AMD and based on a Radeon HD GPU.

c.) we know the wii u GPU has multi-display functionality.

d.) AMD/ATI Eyefinity Technology (ie. multidisplay) was introduced with the Radeon 5000 series, and allowed at a minimum 3 display outputs simultaneously.

3 display outputs = two controllers + the tv.

another possibilty is that they could customly downgrade the GPU to support only 2 display outputs, but i don't know the incentive to go out of their way to downgrade the functionality like that. it would probably be easier to go with what works already here.

for the GPU, any guesses on which AMD Radeon HD GPU it will be based on?

[QUOTE="JB730"]

so turns out that AMD is making a custom version of its Radeon HD GPU for the wii U, with multiple display support (almost confirms that the controllers will use the console hardware remotely, and hence shouldn't be too expensive).
