Well, for dark games the horror genre is your best bet.

1. I agree with Oblivion and add Morrowind. Morrowind is actually scarier and darker than Oblivion but Oblivion has more gore/ violence.

2. Silent Hill series. Any one of them is, literally, very dark.

3. Older Resident Evil games: the whole thing usually happens at night with a lot of scary stuff.

4. Manhunt. I know a lot of people think it to be nothing more but a violent punching bag to release your frustrations, but I found it to be very artistic in a dark way.

5. Mortal Combat series

6. Clock Tower series (horror game)

7. Nightmare Creatures. I played that long time ago on PS, but it stuck in my memory. The graphics would be really bad by today's standards though.

8. X3 is a pretty dark game (the space sim) because of the whole lonely space setting. It's got a high learning curve and I didn't like it all that much, but it did have a nice mood.

9. Aliens VS Predator 2: HIGHLY recommended! The graphics are old by now but still not too bad. Very dark and fun to play as predator.

10 Aliens Trilogy. I liked it as a kid. Others here don't think much of it. It is pretty dark though.

11. Hitman. Not scary or anything, but the storyline and the setting is always dark. What would do you expect from a game called Hitman.

12. Indigo Prophecy. It's not really dark, but more...heavy. I don'know if those two can be seen as the same.

13. Max Payne series. Very dark action. I got freaked out when in the first game he had to follow a line of blood while hearing his little dead daughter cry, or something along those lines. I would even call it horror.

14. Neverwinter Nights - Hordes of the Underdark expansion

15. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

16. Twisted Metal series

17. That weird figting game where you used extremely gory ways to kill you really weird psychotic opponents in some mental institution. I forgot the name - it's an old game.

18. Prince of Persia Warrior Within.

19. Spawn series

Any game with an anti-hero promises to be pretty dark.

What about the people who modded Morrowind into something completely divine and unforgettable?

Talus057

I'm right here :)

...but I think it's pretty much agreed upon by anyone worth their weight in the gaming world that Oblivion was garbage compared to Morrowind,

"Oblivion was so much better than Morrowind because it has better graphics",

Talus057

Indeed Oblivion lost the magic of Morrowind, but the issue can be much discussed. To me, Oblivion was not better because of its graphics, but because of more freedom of action, horse riding and all that other cool new stuff that was less appreciated by the older lore fans. The probelm was that the same things that made it a better game also made it a worse game (like fast travel). In fact I would go as far as saying that Morrowind looked better than Oblivion. Morrowind captured the eye and wouldn't let go untill you explored what was around the next corner.

Who plays games for graphics?

Talus057

I do, among other reasons. And by the way, do you remember about the eye of the beholder? It doesn't matter if a gamer only played around for a day or even just one hour. If he pays and plays, he becomes a part of the gaming word, whether you want it or not. His opinion matters because he is the one who makes gaming possible. Your great gaming past is irrelevant.

You want to see good graphics? Logoff and GO OUTSIDE; great graphics, RL quality.

Talus057

Good advice. I'm already following it, limiting my game time and increasing my travel time.

However, I believe you don't understand how to some people a fake picture that looks good can be more interesting than the reality that looks great, because it can. It is vital to understand that in order to understand the hype. It's hard to explain if you don't get it and it would be a long story, but I believe it has something to do with the alternate reality - escapism. I'm an old gamer but to me graphics have been one of the most important things since the times I played SN.

By the way, professionals don't show their anger. Nooby-noobs do :)

I'm torn between Chessmaster on high difficulty level and the original Gran Turismo.

Playing chess against a computer on above average difficulty is really difficult period because of the nature of the game, while Gran Turismo cost me a PlayStation and a few joysticks, all of which I smashed in anger of not being able to pass the game's license qualifications. I don't think I passed more than 60%. (later I realized that racing games just really, REALLY piss me off period and I'm not good at them anyway)

Well let's jolt my memory...

1. Doom ultimate. I know you guys are laughing but when I was 7 and played that thing at night, it left an impression.

2. Doom 3. I only played a little part of it, but the little part included some really scary things jumping at me out of a wall and I heard that the rest of the game was the same.

3. Clock Tower. An action/adventure game about a serial killer. You have to investigate and from time to time he wil appear and try to cut you in two. I was young, it was scary.

4. Silent Hill. I played the original with a friend on PS and he was scared s**tless. Much of the game is played in darkness and silence.

5. Resident Evil 2

Now that I think about, the games that were really scary back then, would not be that scary to me now. Manhunt, for example, had no effect on me whatsoever. I just really enjoyed stabbing people over and over.

EDIT: I saw Stalker in the list here and I must definately put it at number 6 or even higher than that. When you had to go through that mental barrier and there were ghosts screwing with your mind and weird noises and brightness and the gritty background.....damn

I was reading up on different conflicts and I remembered this post. I took the liberty to list a few more conflicts. Wikipedia has a whole list of conflicts for the US alone.

1. Grenada: US and the coalition succeeded. Few losses and a short war, but you could shove a covert operation or two in there.

2. Dominican Republic 1965

3. Panama "Just Cause" op 1989

4. The Falklands war of 1982

5. The Chechen war (big one and partially ongoing)

Attacks in Lybia, 1986 Bolivia ops, etc

I think if there is any game I could say I "hate", it would be WoW. mstc_Q

I have to double that feeling haha...well not hate, but I dislike it in a really strange way. It had such a hype surrounding it and gamespot gave it a high grade, while it trashed Lineage 2. I've always thought WoW looks like cr*p. Maybe I'm just an old and loyal L2 fan.

[QUOTE="Jedo"]

Haven't read any of the 21 pages of this thing. My answer is short and simple: find a way to make games affordable for most.

Piracy will always exist, but there can be more or less of it.

Skie7

Games are incredibly cheap 6 months, 12 months. or more down the road. PC games prices drop fairly quickly. You can get excellent PC games for $10-$20. Yeah, they're older, but piracy has very little to do with the cost to purchase games. Yes, there are exceptions where legit games are expensive in some countries, but there's very little sales loss considering the price there.

Well, I actually speak out of personal experience in my past and that of my friends. I think it's a pretty important reason.

First of all, as you said, not all games follow your example. Battlefield 2 is pretty old now, but I actually had to buy it in Russia when I had a chance because it was cheap enough there. Here it's still 35 Euros or so (at least it was a lil while ago). 10 buck drop won't save the situation and games are going to become even more expensive if the current trend is to continue. Poor kids (the ones who download the most) are unlikely to have that kind of money.

Waiting till the game becomes cheap brings its own problems. While the games drop in price, many of them also become less popular and their graphics "become" crappy (by comparison with newer games). Also there's the impatience factor to back up the financial factor. Kids want to play the hyped games now...not 5 years later when the game is cheaper. You know, I waited several years for Soldier of Fortune 2 to become cheap here. When it did, my interest was already lost.

To be fair I must admit that money is just one of the many factors. I gotta confess, a few of my acquaintances are downloading all their games illegally, even though they are adults with jobs (bad jobs but jobs none the less). They are asking me why I'm buying my games? Their psychology is "why buy, even those games that are cheap, when you can so easily download them, new and old games equally easy?" I can answer that question. They can't, so they download. I think these "adults" are an exception though.

I'm not sure what is meant by "Guilty Pleasure" but if you mean evil games , maybe I would choose Manhunt 2.jamestabang

Probably means games one is ashamed to like, but can't help it.

Every game I've played is guilty pleasure to me, because I'm little bit against games but I love em at the same time.

I only played the first Halo, but I liked it, had no problem with it whatsoever. It was a good journey, on and off-line, but the sad part was that the story didn't have a satisfying end...any end for that matter.
