the moment church starts effecting who is chosen to govern we have a serious problem... :|

comp_atkins
If Obama was to appoint her and provoke a conflict with the Catholic Bishops wouldn't that go against his stated desire to unify the country. Obama should try not to anger the church, since the President should try not to do anything that would divide the country.

Apparently, one of the people Obama is considering for Chairing the Health committee is Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a pro-choice Catholic who is in a dispute with her Bishop for vetoing a law that would limit abortion (by the way the position of Health Committee tends to influence America's abortion policy). Meanwhile at the USCCB meeting next week, Archbishop Naumann, the bishop that is in this dispute with Sebelius could be elected as head of the Commitee for pro-life policies.

So that very well could entail a clash of Church vs. State (the Church will win because Obama's presidency can't last more than 8 years). Obama should not appoint Sebelius to his cabinet, he should know that provoking the Church will not work to his benefit come 2010 and 2012. Now let's hope Obama's sense trumps his ideology.

here is an insightful letter written to Obama by John L. Allen Jr. It basically details how and why, despite their differences on abortion, the Vatican and the Obama administration can work together for the common good of the world. It also issues a political reason: 2012- Obama lost the white Catholic vote closely but was able to get by because he won the Latino vote. If Obama hurts U.S-Vatican ties then in 2012 he could lose the white Catholic vote even more than in 2008 and could lose the Latino Catholic vote (if he loses both the white and Latino Catholic votes by a good percentage, that could be curtains for his reelection).

I would add some more advice to Obama here: you shouldn't bring the abortion issue to the forefront, ie. he should only protect, not advance abortion rights.

p.s. if any of you guys know people in the Obama campaign, if you could somehow get this letter to his attention, I think it would do the whole world a lot of good.

Well, the FBI is investigating them for voter fraud. And the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (who had previously donated money to ACORN's voter-registration efforts) are investigating to see if they use their money in partisan ways. Obviously ACORN should be more worried about the FBI as the USCCB doesn't have jails, but the USCCB is cutting off the cash they gave ACORN.

It has too do with the filth they see on tv. The best way to combat this is: 1. censorship 2. more parental supervision

Kmiec is a pro-life Law professor who endorsed Obama, despite the fact that Obama is prochoice. Now that Obama is elected Archbishop Chaput says that Kmiec has an obligation to try to weaken Obama's support for abortion and to oppose Obama when he tries to support abortion. Kmiec seems to agree and both agree that some of the comments during the election were too vitriolic.

He also said the full letter will not be disclosed because it contains some things that are of a personal nature.

I smell a love affair.

Maybe Oboma is in secretly in love with the Pope??

Well then Obama would have to break his promise that the first thing he would do as president is sign the freedom of choice act, I think the Pope wants him to veto it if it passes.

also, Archbishop Donald Wuerl (Washington D.C.) and Francis Cardinal George (Chicago and President of the USCCB) have congratulated Obama and exhorted him to "defend the most vulnerable among us " , partially a veiled reference to abortion.

Meanwhile other Catholic leaders react: John J. Allen says the Vatican and Obama will work together on some issues and clash on others. Austin Ruse says Catholics should support Obama where they can and oppose him "with all of our being" on issues like abortion and "If Catholics were really acting on a proper understanding of their faith, Barack Obama would never have been elected" as well as saying "

The Church will be in semi-permanent opposition to the adminstration on these most important public policy issues in the church."

George Weigel, political commentator and biographer of Pope John Paul II, said serious Catholics should focus on trying to protect pro-life legal gains over the past thirty years from "President Obama and a radically pro-abortion Congress led by a self-described 'ardent Catholic'."

Father Frank Pavone, President of Priests for Life, said Catholics should focus on challenging Obama "every day of his Presidency to stop the ongoing killing of children in America, and to work for 'change' in the Democratic Party so that it no longer is a herald of death for the unborn."

He added that the Catholic Church's effort to register voters could have been "much stronger," urging that registration drives for the 2010 election cycle begin now.

Fr. Federico Lombardi, SJ, the Vatican spokesman has revealed that the Pope has sent his greetings to Obama and is praying for him. He also said the full letter will not be disclosed because it contains some things that are of a personal nature. Also he said the Vatican hopes Obama "will be able to respond to the expectations and hopes placed in him, by effectively serving what is right and just, finding adequate ways to promote world peace, favoring the growth and dignity of the human person, in full respect of the essential human and spiritual values,"

Maybe with some Mentoring from the Pope, Obama won't be that bad afterall.
