We're always on the go, so anything mobile tends to appeal to the American gamer. What with cell phones being a staple of our society, and the PlayStation brand bigger than ever before, shouldn't we assume we'd see a PlayStation-branded phone at some point? The rumors have been flying about that idea, and PocketGamer UK recently asked the question of a Sony Ericsson representative.

Sony's Peter Ahnegard, in talking about the future of mobile gaming, hinted at the definite possibility of a PS phone some time in the near future. His reply to the question, "So when is the PlayStation phone coming?" is as follows:

"I've been waiting for that one! To explain our position I need to look at the brands we've developed so far, in particular the Cyber-shot and Walkman phones. When we looked at all the assets we could muster for music and imaging the services, downloads and overall proposition, we felt that we could create something that really lived up to the values of the brand and fill all the required boxes. We're not launching a brand of handset simply because we can, but because we can lead up to the expectations of the consumer.

Up until today we haven't felt we could launch a PlayStation phone because it wouldn't be recognised as a true continuation of that brand of products."

Yes, it's that "up until today" part that catches our eye, because it of course implies that Sony Ericsson has commenced the brainstorming process. Right? PocketGamer wanted to know if it's something we could see before Christmas (an ambitious question), and Ahnegard responded-

"It's obviously something that we're looking at but right now I can't really comment. Before Christmas, certainly... but exactly which Christmas I can't confirm!"

Damn, we were really close to an all-out confirmation there. But it still seems relatively clear that a PlayStation phone is a very real possibility for the future, and something that should be a major addition to both the mobile phone and mobile gaming world. Remember the PSP phone rumors? Well, an actual PS Phone seems far more plausible at this point.

the answer is no, the intercooler as matter of fact does not extend your PS3's life but makes it shorter.sniper_99

Hes right all the intercooler does is screw up the airflow inside the PS3 and eventually kills it.

Not surprisingly, Sony has kicked off their press conference with updated sales figures and other relevant statistics. These involve both the PS3 and PS2, and just about all these numbers are pretty darn rosy.

To this point, here are the important stats provided by Sony's David Reeves- there have been nearly 5 million PS2s sold in Germany to date, and he points to "emerging markets as a key driver." He moved on to say that "sales of hardware and software continue to exceed all our expectations." The PS2 has the biggest installed userbase in video game console history, and in total, there have been over 500 million pieces of software produced. "And it's still outselling our dear colleagues the Xbox 360 weekly by a ratio of three-to-one," finished Reeves (haha).

As for the PS3, he says that 65 titles will be available in Europe for the PS3 by this Christmas, which goes along nicely with the "stunning" launch of the console last March. So far, they've sold 13 million units to consumers throughout Europe and - obviously - the top-selling games have been Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm (both million-sellers worldwide). It seems the PS3 is actually growing at a "faster curve" than the PS2 did in the first three months in Europe, Reeves noted, and called it "an impressive pattern of growth." In the end, he's projecting that 140 million PlayStation consoles will be in PAL territories by 2010.

Apparently, their format is bigger than yours. by IGN DVD

August 21, 2007 - The Blu-ray Disc Association released a formal statement yesterday in response to the recent announcement that both Paramount and DreamWorks Animation have opted into the camp of HD DVD. Numbers and facts and figures -- which can be read in any number of ways by any number of people -- were tossed around lightly.

Of the move to HD DVD, Chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association U.S. Promotions Committee Andy Parsons stated:

"The decision seems oddly timed given Blu-ray's tremendous momentum both with consumers and with retail. Blu-ray title sales continue to outpace HD DVD sales by nearly a 2 to 1 margin, and major retailers have expressed a strong preference for Blu-ray. Moreover, the price delta between HD DVD and Blu-ray players has been greatly reduced in the past few months, a trend that is on its way to eliminating any perceived cost advantage the HD DVD format has claimed to have. Under these circumstances, we can only imagine what could have enticed Paramount to walk away from a format that is clearly selling significantly more software than the HD DVD format."

Following the statement, the Association presented a number of Blu-ray facts which they believe justify the format as the prevailing method for viewing high-def DVDs:

  • Blu-ray titles have consistently outsold HD DVD by a ratio of two to one since January of this year. Consumer preferences for BD have been especially clear with day-and-date releases on both formats like The Departed and 300.

  • Blu-ray has sold 1.6 million discs so far this calendar year, whereas HD DVD has sold 795K.

  • In June, Blockbuster decided to support only Blu-ray discs at the vast majority (85%) of its retail stores due to actual consumer rental patterns that showed a clear preference for BD.

  • In July, Target announced their plan to sell only a Blu-ray set-top player in retail stores, and not sell any HD DVD set top models through this holiday season.

  • Also in July, BJ's Wholesale Club, a significant retailer in the Northeast region, has decided to sell only Blu-ray products.

  • The price delta between HD DVD and Blu-ray players has been greatly reduced in the past few months, a trend that is on its way to eliminate any perceived cost advantage the HD DVD format has claimed to have. Sony also lowered the price of the PS3 console to $499, resulting in a Sony-claimed 135% increase in sales.

  • Major blockbuster titles have been announced by Disney and Sony Pictures, including Disney/Pixar's Cars, Ratatouille and Finding Nemo, Pirates 3, Spiderman 1, 2 and 3. These should have a very significant impact on consumer adoption of Blu-ray.

  • It took 10 months for Blu-ray to achieve 1 million disc sales, but only 3 months to achieve 2 million. Market momentum is clearly accelerating.
