Soooo been a while since I started keeping track of HAWX... Not really interested in Air-Simulation and such, but I liked blazing angels and a modern arcade from the same dev seemed promising. And not having a console and Ace combat also did their part. Now what can I say... 3 Planes, no save feature, no coop(sad...), and one mission to complete. From the first second I absolutely disagreed on using assistance. The camera seemed a little TOO attached to the plane's tail, the controls were like steering a tank... honestly. When I turned the thing off it felt like total freedom(I started with expert mode, stuck to it afterwards), no need to lock camera, better maneuvers and definitely the kind of dynamic dogfights and spectacular gameplay I expected. But it's definitely an arcade, to the core. The cockpit, well, nicely done, but apart from displaying the planes speed, altitude and ammo, is absolutely useless and well, uncomfortable to play with. A little interaction would be nice. Oh and 200 rockets per plane also seem a bit(ahem) too much even for an arcade. A Tom Clancy's brand must at least try to have some seriousness. Nope. You'll have a mere F-14a Fighter doing triple somersaults and firing Multi AA missles at 4 Su-47-s simultaniously and then hitting a tank in the middle of skyscrapers, with pinpoint accuracy. And no such things like stalling from high altitude or doing takeoffs. Wait no, there was actually a stall thing in the training, but it's so easy to overcome it's just funny. It mostly happens when you fail to do a backflip, or screw up while with the assistance off. And That's not often. But it definitely delivers the sensation of being a part of an elite squadron. Sure, you can just order your teammates to attack and fly around, waiting for the mission to complete itself. Not that the AI is very bright, or very dumb... I actually can't say because at those speeds it was hard to monitor NPC's. Guess it's just the rock-paper-scissor thing. But yeah, the mission pretty much completes itself. And only at the end, when you show off against kinda-like-boss 4 fighters, you understand all those ERS, assistance and advanced air moves that were promoted. Those guys were HARD. That was actually when my faith in the game was restored. So go hawx, waiting for ya. I also liked the little details. Flares, for instance. Nice and classy. Not that they are always needed, but it's always nice to have them by your side. The rocket camera mode is a little unpolished, your plane is uncontrollable during missle monitoring so choose your moments. Oh and the geographic map... well, It just looks TOO much like the maps have just been streched over the landscape and then prettied with some 3D buildings and rare trees. While horrible up close, the GeoEye textures somehow seem like the most natural thing from high altitudes. Weird, I know... Aaand lastly I was astounded by the optimization. I have a low-end PC, and managing a maximum settings with AA and 45 FPS(no high hopes, DX10 was disabled) is a real feat for my card, especially on an up-to date game. So good job on that Ubi. All in all I think I'll wait for GS-s review, and then I'll decide about buying it. It still sometimes feels a little wrong, then a little astonishing, and constantly the mix of the two. 17 More locations, they say. and 50 planes. Well, I'll hope for the best.
