Yep, that picture pretty much sums up the state of gaming today. Nice find.

Yes, there are a lot more hints nowadays, it might be obnoxious or annoying when you're playing, but think of someone's who's completely new to gaming, they'd probably sit there for a couple of minutes trying to figure out what to do, besides, most games have the option to disable hints, so I don't think it's really that big a deal.

And the bold part of your comment is one of the problems with developers today. They assume thata new player won't want to move forward and discover things for themselves, but prefer to have the game developer lead them around by the nose. Whatever happened to people experimenting, and using trial and error? It doesn't matter if you're new to a game - if you're not bold enough to actually try things out for yourself, then what is the point of playing?
Games used to come with decent manuals that gave you information on the game, and hints and tips on how to play. Okay, so they decided to ditch the manuals to save costs and put some of that content into the game. That's fine. And a lot of games now also come with 'tutorial' levels, that are designed to get you used to the controls and some basic puzzle solving. That's fine. But really that should be enough to get anyone started.
But the problem is that in today's games the pop up messages are there from start to finish. Does a gamer honestly need reminding every time to reload their gun, or which button is used to jump or interact with the environment? Come on, gamers aren't that mentally deficient. Yes, some games may allow you to turn off these annoying pop-ups, but it's just the idea that developers deem such things necessary through an entire game that is mind-boggling. There's no reason for it.
Great post. That sums up how I feel!
