If you cut government spending, people with govt jobs will lose those. And lots of other service jobs that revolve around them will be lost as well. But this pertains to all cuts - whether it be military, police, teachers, etc.

Storm_Marine

somebody told me once that it will be a job transfer. All those jobs will instantly be privatized.

If there's demand then they will be. There's no market demand for alot of public jobs however. That said it's not something you'd want to do suddenly. Things need time to readjust.

Took the words right out of my brain. The government doesn't have to manage everything. Some say breaking windows stimulates the economy. Others say WWII got us out of the great depression. And one says a mock war against aliens would get us out of this recession.

[QUOTE="lordreaven"] Yup, your country has a large debt, EVERYTHING should be on the table ready to go, first raise taxes (on everyone), close tax loopholes. Penalize hiding money, cut politicians salary, cut defence spending, cut everything else. In essence, no Democrats, no Republicans, EVERYTHING has to be cut and taxed. Period. GreySeal9

I don't think tax increases AND spending cuts are good ideas when the economy is already f ucked. But that's just me.

Another round of short term well-target stimulus to increase demand+structural adjustments (including cuts) to social programs and military buget+getting rid of expensive tax cuts and loopholes would go a long way in encouraging growth while managing our debt.

How about just following that constitution?

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told CNN's Piers Morgan last night that he doesn't "understand why police officers across this country dont stand up collectively and say were going to go on strike, were not going to protect you unless you, the public, through your legislature, do whats required to keep us safe."

We've been hearing a lot of that recently. Earlier this year, The New York Times reprinted a Department of Justice press release and slapped this lede on top of it: As violent crime has decreased across the country, a disturbing trend has emerged: Rising numbers of police officers are being killed.

Bloomberg and The New York Times are both wrong:

  • In 2008, ten times morecivilians regular people were killed by cops than cops were killed by perps.
  • In 2011,72 cops were shot and killed in the entire U.S.; in L.A. County alone, cops shot and killed 54 suspects the same year--22 percent of those people were unarmed.
  • As Scott Reeder reported at Reason this morning, "Farmers, ranchers, commercial fishermen, loggers, garbage collectors, truck drivers, construction workers, pilots, steel workers, roofers, and others are far more likely to face death on the jobs than police or firefighters, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics."
  • And as Choire Sicha wroteearlier this year, "2008 was the ten-year low for police officers being killed, and 2012 is, so far, year-to-date, down 49% from last year."

Bloomberg, the commander of "the seventh biggest army in the world"went on to say that "police officers want to go home to their families. And were doing everything we can to make their job more difficult, but more importantly, more dangerous, by leaving guns in the hands of people who shouldnt have them and letting people who have those guns buy things like armor piercing bullets.

Some extra info for how stupid of a thing to say. I bet he gets elected again too. Somewhere. We have to make sure and keep this guy in office. To keep our insults of the government sane.

What some black people think of Ron Paul. They're probably actors though.

They call the terror war overseas defense. How ****ed up is that? I thought that was offense. Cut the useless war on terror altogether. "Cut the useless war on terror."

Look at how dumb this is. They say defense and topsemag55 thinks like me, defense is on our own country. Not in middle-eastern countries. Sorry man, it's the other way around. 500 billion over 10 years. But who knows what other "wars" will pop up in those ten years? Then there will be more spending than cutting. This is hyperbole.

[QUOTE="LOXO7"]Why is this issue more important than auditing the Fed? Oh wait, I forgot where I am. Continue.jimkabrhel

Becausegay marriage and adoption are more widely discussed in the general public than the Fed and bills created by Ron Paul?

Oh my. Not glad to see your partisan support on the most important issue in the US, the economy. It's right to talk about marriage because the vast majority of people don't know correct priorities? What a messed up world.

Adam Curry says the military presence is there to stay even after the Olympic games. He's been right before.
