The Battle for the Smash Ball

A Smash Ball appears! The tension rises. Since it gives you an attack as powerful as the name Final Smash implies, everyone will battle to the death to get it.

There it is! Get it! Get it!

You can't get the Smash Ball by simply touching it. You have to bash it and smash it many times until the player who breaks the Smash Ball gets it.

The Smash Ball's endurance diminishes with each hit and with time.

How should you pursue it? Even this becomes a battle.

Yes! I got it!

Once a character gets it and begins glowing on standby, he or she just does a standard special move to unleash the Final Smash. Just press the B Button without any directional input.

It depends on the particular Final Smash, but simply pressing the button at a random time or place might not work to your advantage.

Some can be dodged fairly well...

So pick a position that your move will strike from. Or create conditions under which you will definitely hit your foes. Do all of this while glowing on standby.

Now just jump up and fire off that Final Smash!

However, if the character on standby gets hit, he or she may fumble the Smash Ball!

Even if someone has it,
all it takes is some aggressive offense...!

Do you use it as soon as you get it? Or save it for later? Do you run from an enemy who got it? Or do you chase him? You'll need instant situational decision-making!

And then there's an element known as the Pity Final Smash. Once a significant point advantage is reached, the losing player is given a bonus chance. When you get this, you will reappear after a KO in Final Smash standby mode.

It's OK to give this out, isn't it?

Now, if you don't want to use Final Smashes whatsoever, you can restrict the appearance of this item in the Item Switch. If you just turn Smash Balls off, you'll be set.

The game-changing Final Smash. Using it is fun. Running from it is fun, too.

Returning Pokemon

If you haven't played the last game or the one before that, you may be left wondering something like, "Why isn't this Pokémon or that Pokémon in the game?" All I've been introducing are the ones new to this game.

So now I'd like to introduce several of the Pokémon that appeared in past installments that will be appearing again in Brawl.

Suicune

Lugia

Entei

Staryu

Bellossom

Ho-Oh

Wobbuffet

Togepi

Snorlax

Celebi

The likelihood of mysterious Pokémon appearing is quite low. Mew and Celebi are especially rare, but they may leave you some kind of present.

Mew dropped a CD. Accept it with gratitude!

UPDATE :D

Dec. 03 Mon. 2007

Friend List

The Wii includes a function called Wii Friends, but you will register a separate list of Smash friends.

That's your Friend Code in the top right.

Please exchange these numbers with your friends. Write a note, do it over the phone, or send it by e-mail - just share your numbers with each other.

Then input your friend's Friend Code.

Once you've both input your codes, it looks something like this.

Oh! It comes with comments.

You can enter your own icon and comments.

This is where you enter your short taunt messages.

The preparation ends there. After this, you won't have to do it every time.

So, let's play a game! In that case, someone has to enter someone else's game.

The person who will host creates a room.

Everyone can see the status of people on their Friend Roster.

You can see if they're online or hosting a match.

If you want to play together, just select that person's name and choose OK!

Join someone who is hosting a match.

Once all participants select OK...

You can play.

Yep. Simple.

Simple is best.

By the way, the circle at the top right of your Friend Roster approximates the connection quality of your last connection. The closer it is to blue, the smoother you'll be able to play.

Events

It's the return of Events! This is a single-player mode in which you battle through predetermined situations.

This is the Events selection screen.

Oh! The pictures make it easy to understand.

And it has different difficulty settings!

For these, a harder setting is probably more exciting, but you can go ahead and set it however you like.

For example, you'll find these kinds of situations:

Two Trouble Kings

Character: Mario

Bowser and King Dedede battle as a team!
And Mario stands alone against them.

Pink Ball Repulsion

Character: Meta Knight

Kirby must not be allowed on the Battleship Halberd!
Blast Kirby off before the platform lands on the Halberd!

Cleaning House in Skyworld

Character: Pit

Destroy all the terrain in Skyworld!
Wario both gets in the way and helps out?

Sleeping in the Eggs

Character: Yoshi

Using Yoshi's Egg Lay standard special move,
put both enemies inside eggs simultaneously!

Dark Link Duel

Character: Link

It's a fated battle with your own shadow.
This is a stamina based match.

High scores are recorded for each challenge at each difficulty level. You don't just clear these challenges-competing for time will magnify the fun.

Enjoy Smash's chance meetings between a variety of characters!

Wario: Final Smash

Wario's Final Smash is Wario-Man!

Eat garlic!

Wario-Man!

Even after becoming Wario-Man, you control him as you normally would. And he doesn't unleash any overwhelmingly powerful attacks.

But he is able to negate a variety of moves and boasts some rather odd abilities...

Punch to pummelpummelpummelpummel!

It's a sideways-sliding shoulder tackle!

His midair moves make him fly?!

His special moves are also powered up, but the one thing you can't do is ride his bike.

Don't do it.

This may seem like a joke, but you absolutely must not ride it.

Tooooooo faaaaaaaaast!!!

Widescreen Support

This title, like most Wii titles, supports widescreen display. In other words, you can enjoy the game with full display across televisions with wider screens, too.

This is standard display.

This is widescreen display.

The border off the screen that cues a KO is the same for both. Choose the display mode that matches the TV you have at home.

But some people may not know if they have a normal TV or widescreen TV, and may not even know what difficult terminology like 4:3 or 16:9 means. Right? Who knows all that stuff?

So, all you have to do is check the circle that appears in the background on the screen where you choose your display setting.

This is the correct standard ratio.

This is the correct widescreen ratio.

The two shots above... Wrong.

Being able to just look at the image and know if you got your settings right is pretty huge, huh?

Ah, yes. If your television has screen-size settings called Wide and Full, set your TV to Full. If you choose Wide, there is a chance the image may be shifted toward the center of the screen.

Controls

If you use the Controls function under Options, you can assign controls to any button configuration you like.

First, input a name.

What's important to know is that button configurations must be tied to a specific name. Once you do that, any time you choose that name afterward, you'll automatically play with the button settings you chose.

One name can handle controls for four controllers.

Even a GameCube Controller!

Even an NES-****Wii Remote!

Even a ****c Controller!

Even the Nunchuk!

...Huh? What's that thing that says "Shake Smash" under Nunchuk?

With this function, you just shake the Wii Remote to do a Smash Attack in the direction you shook it. It's a little bonus we added.

Also, if you turn Tap Jump off, you can cut the jump function out of the up direction on the Control Stick. This means it's easier to do an up attack without jumping into the air. Use whichever way you prefer.

Then try it out!

Do it to your heart's content. Try to find the perfect button combination!

But, if you decide to play Smash at a friend's house, your button configuration naturally won't be there. And trying to set it up all over again is sort of a pain.

I didn't miss this detail, though.

Press the + Button on the name list to open the menu.

When the menu screen pops up, press and hold both the 1 Button and the 2 Button. After a moment, your name will be saved to the Wii Remote. Of course, you can expect your control settings to carry over along with your name!

Button settings are transferred by way of the Wii Remote.

Pack your name into your Wii Remote and transfer it the Wii at your friend's house. Then choose that name to play with your button configuration.

Wow. I hate to say it, but we really have thought of everything.

Update

Nov. 23 Fri. 2007

Lucas: Final Smash

Lucas's Final Smash is PK Starstorm! It's a move in which he unleashes a rapid barrage of meteorlike PSI power.

After a fierce battle, he gets the Smash Ball!

P...K....

STARRRRRRRRSTORRRRRRRRRM!

As the star storm continues, the tension increases. They all rain down at once.

Can you possibly escape it?!

It may be that it's less advantageous on larger stages and more advantageous on smaller ones. There are a variety of moves like this that have clear advantages and disadvantages depending on the terrain.

Nov. 23 Fri. 2007

Charged Special Moves

Link's Standard Special Move: The Hero's Bow

Pikachu's Side Special Move: Skull Bash

These moves can be charged up by holding down the special-move button, increasing both speed and power. If you press the button down firmly and then release, you'll unleash the move at full strength! When you first try out a character you aren't familiar with, this should be the first thing you try.

But, there are also some moves that continue charging even after you release the button... Huh???

DK's Standard Special Move: Giant Punch

Samus's Standard Special Move: Charge Shot

...among others.

For these moves, when you press the special-move button again, it unleashes the move at the power level you charged it to.

Also, with these moves, you can move around while charged by charging the move to the maximum limit or by pressing the shield button to cancel the charge.

Look! Smoke shoots out from his head when he's reached maximum charge!

Do your best to build up the maximum charge, then unleash it at just the right moment! These are superimportant techniques for characters like DK and Samus. Don't forget them.

Saki Amamiya

Saki Amamiya

Saki Amamiya appears from Sin & Punishment: Successor to the Earth! This title is currently available via the Virtual Console.

Saki stands on solid ground!

He uses his weapon, the Cannon Sword, which combines a sword and a gun into one to slice and shoot!

He cuts repeatedly without mercy!

And shows off his magnificent jump!

Take this!!

As with the original title, he speaks in English.

He rivals just about any main character. There were many requests from users for his inclusion, and he IS pretty cool, so I did what I could to include him. After all, this game does let you enjoy a dream cast of supporting characters!

H-he has absolutely no problem fitting in!
