I would spend $400 on a system every 2-3 years if the leap is noticeable enough. Sell the old system for $250 or so. What would be the problem? We do this with cellphones currently.

As power increases, it takes longer and longer to make a game to take advantage of that power. A 3 year generation wouldn't even see a single game made for most of the console gens because development cycles are already 2-4 years or longer depending on what it is.

Yep.. Some games take 5+ years to even make. And as power increases and know how decreases games get less depth. We seen it all last year. Pretty graphics with shit content.

Devs need to learn the machine inside and out, to not have to deal with tech hurdles and just focus on making good games. This takes time and usually doesn't happen until year 2-3 of a console cycle and the best games usually come at the tail end (compare the last of us to too human or haze or some of the other crap we got at the begining of gen 7).

Also game consoles are not cell phones. Your cellphone has a subsidy with the phone company. You have a $600-1000 cell phone, but you don't pay that much. Consoles don't work that way, you have to pay for it all out of pocket. Are you ready to stomach a $1000 console for minimum gains?

This comes courtesy of this job listing, which is recruiting a software engineer to build a game for their next generation system, specifically for R&D purposes. The relevant part of the listing:

We have an exciting opportunity at Sony Computer Entertainment of America (PlayStation). We seek a senior game programmer to assist us in developing a game used for R&D purposes related to our next generation gaming system. For someone passionate about gaming this is a very rare opportunity. After reviewing the below job profile, if this is you, please apply!

I find this very pleasing. Last generation dragged on for far too long, and I never want a repeat of that. It is good to see that, while stragglers like Nintendo are understandably keen to move on to the next generation and start over, even the PS4, which is the current leader, is willing to not stay stuck on this generation for too long.

Charizard, and the rest of the posters who obviously didn't read, or know how to comprehend....

I highly doubt this has anything at all to do with PS5.

"game programmer" .... "in developing a game.".. related to our next generation gaming system... "software engineer"

This could be a number of things.

1. It specifically says game programmer and developing a game. Not hardware engineers.. which is what you need first for a new system.

2. related to our next generation system. This is very vague and the definition here could be anything. People still label the ps4 as "next gen" it's only been out for 1.5 years... they are most likely referring to the ps4. OR it could be for the unreleased "Morpheus" which would make even more sense due to the R&D... for software. Lets not forget that VR is a thing and needs developers.

3. No where did it mention PS5 or even hint at it. Next generation in the early stages of a consoles life usually means current generation. It's a PR tactic as it keeps the current gen "bleeding edge".

Companies start work on the next console right away, but usually not game software until at least the year before release. This is most likely ps4 or Morpheus.

Also what's all this bullcrap about gens being too long. Why? Last gen was a perfect length. If a generation is too short you miss out on games taking full advantage of the hardware and devs need to start over from the beginning and we get crap like ryse, titanfall and destiny again. Games with little to no content. I'd rather have a long generation with kickass games (like The Last of us, Skyrim, Borderlands 2, Dishonorod, Beyond 2 Souls, etc... all of which came out at the tail end of Ps3 ).

Why wish for a short generation? Do you enjoy spending money on consoles? I sure as hell don't (and stick to one console + PC and both handhelds per gen.) When a new console cycles we get a year of mediocre shit.... happens everytime as developers need to learn to program for the thing. The longer they have with it the better they get and can make some amazing products. It isn't until ideas are tapped out, and no progress can be made that a new console is needed.

@SecretPolice: just because someone has both consoles does not mean someone has both games.

The ps4 has, according to digital foundry 1 or 2 times where it dips to 25fps. The x1 dips as well just to around 28fps.. the difference is the ps4 is locked at 1080p while the x1 is at 900p and goes to 1080 on title screen and ui.

I'll take the higher resolution over a few isolated frame drops. Some people are making it out like it's a major thing but in realty all versions are good. The game is great.

@jg4xchamp: but not everyone thinks halo is a good game or series. I own halo 2 on oc and find it a overrated game that doesn't deserve the score it got, and found so many better fps games on pc at the time..

But that's my opinion on the series. Doesn't make it fact only my personal opinion just like yours about halo being good and order being bad. Someone else can think the opposite or both shit and it's equally valid. You can't pass opinions off as fact period.

@TheFadeForever: some of us recognize that people have different tastes. Also different sites like polygon or reviewers like mcshea have agendas for clicks or spreading an ultra left agenda... so their reviews need to be scrutinized more.

A good example, I loved alpha protocol. It got a 6 here for bad fps.gunplay. but the game was an rpg and uses dice rolls. Most sites dinged it for doing that, but that's what it set out to do. It wasn't supposed to be an fps. I loved that game.

@-God-: haha ... that is funny and sadly true though... but that's at least temporary.

Or doesn't take weeks or months for a patch.

@adamosmaki: that's what I thought. Hell, we even had a 10 plus page thread on system wars bemoaning their departure into the game dev graveyard. It was a sad day.

Anyone know the details on how the got the band back together? And where the hell is stalker 2? That game was almost done when they went kaput..wtf!

@lord_magikarp: I get that all pcs are different. I've run into this before, but usually I can find a fix.

For gal civ 3, I got the game to boot one time, it got to the intro video and then the menu. I had to alt tab to do something real quick and I come back to the game and all the ui fonts are missing. So I turn off the game thinking that alt tab screwed it. I try to boot and now it never gets past the splash screen.

It's not my machine when ui fonts go away from alt tabbing, or when it launches one time bit never again. The game is obviously horribly coded. And remembering their last game on release elemental, I'm not wrong.
