The Wii isn't a risk in the slightest. It was just pure obvious there was a untouched casual market out there. All they needed to do is look at the PS2 and bang it came to them. Sony had it but they where totally oblivious to it. Look how easy the Wii is selling. It's selling off basically nothing. It's cheap price and the motion sensing is just a tempting buy but it's not a risk.

Again, I think the PC games were the greater proof of the existence of the "casual" audience, though yeah, if any console last generation had the most of this type of player, it was the PS2.
I'll also argue that the Wii was a risk, as its baby step in power and unusual controller held a high risk of alienating their fans (if you need more proof of this, then you haven't been in System Wars very long :P), and, while the price and the (usually) easier to use control scheme seemed like a good way to bring in a new audience, it was still something practically untested before then (with the DS being the only real indicator of potential success).
