If it weren't for gaming and a ton of compatible programs, I wouldn't give a damn about Windows. We don't need a new, expensive OS every few years when there are *free* alternatives that do the job just as good (or even better). They just lack support and that's where MS has the (big) advantage.

Right, so we dont NEED MS, but we do need them? great logic you have there. The free alternative you love to mention is a hassle, MS is the middle ground between Linux and Apple.

Why even bother getting the OS than as the stupid metro is ita main feature. If you don't have a tablet and are using anpc for work, gaming or hobby programming, music, video production, web production etc.. A tablet is not the way to go... They are mainly for soccer moms and yuppies who like Mac type stuff because its not tech looking, u know the people who like 1 button mice. Only thing a tablet could be good for is a presentation or taking notes IMO. Another problem with windows 8 is that ms is releasing this too soon. Windows 7 feels like it just came out, I just for it last year from xp. The time from xp to vista was 6 years, the time from win7 - 8 is what 2 years.. M$ is really getting greedy here!!! And win7 works flawlessly why change? The people who buy anything OS from ms are wastin their money.. There is no reason to upgrade from win7 unless u own a tablet, period! 3 years is too soon? oh wait thats their normal time-frame silly me. and the rest is just baseless.

On top of that, it's ugly and makes simple tasks take longer because now you have to deal with 2 entirely different GUIs (there many feature that are only accessible on the Metro part and vice versa).

True that switching between to GUIs is pretty bad, I don't know who thought that was a good idea both, Ubuntu and OSX know better than that. Why is it bad exactly? because youve tried it for 10 minutes, not understood it then condemned it for all eternity?

How you can say a custimizable tiled base UI is uglier than shoving loads of minature icons on a desktop is ugly is beyond me, but to each his own.
