People like you said the same exact thing about the Xbox 360 when the Kinect was released.

But look where Microsoft is at now...they're all about the casuals.

Five years ago, I wouldn't have believed it either.

But Microsoft is a different company now...and they seem committed to changing their image.

peterw007

Look, the Xbox on ever had Halo, Gears and Forza ect to its name before bloody kinect came around, if you think that would of been different because of kinect then your sadly mistaken, the reality is they were running dry anyway. They just dont have that talent for first party that sony and nintendo have had for years. But to make such a claim just because of thier new direction is insane. if they didnt go down this road they would lose anyway. Business is great, but consumors move foward at a faster rate, both apple and microsoft OS's were going to change either way. As metro evolves what advantage will explorer bring hmmm? as they flesh metro out, as they convert more of explorer to it, whats to miss exactly?

That's exactly Microsoft's justification for phasing Windows Explorer out.

"We have to phase it out because it's the only way we'll evolve as a company."

And where is your comeback stating explorer is: A) Long term better solution B) What does it provide now that metro cant?

Tell me, what all of you think is so important about explorer? that you cant do in metro? (opfcourse, when all the current programs we use are properly supported in it. What? other than lower level stuff, which will no doubt be part of it eventually.

Oh, I'm not doubting that.

But radical changes in the user interface completely destroys what makes Windows...Windows.

In an operating system the UI is the most crucial element...it defines the product.

That's why you have seen very little physical change between Mac OS X versions, because Mac OS X is defined as a certain UI.

-

The reason change is bad...is because we are seeing Microsoft take deliberate steps to phase out Windows Explorer.

I have personally been using Windows Explorer since 1998 (when I bought my first computer)...and the thought of having a computer without it just feels...unnatural.

peterw007

Phasing out windows explorer  talk about paranoia gone mad. IF that was the case they could of just took the apple route and made a seperate OS not including it.

[QUOTE="musicalmac"]It's too bad. Windows 7 is even disappointing to me. Good for games - that's it. _TheJoker_

What's wrong with the rest?

Its not a mac product.

Regardless, by forcing everyone to use Metro UI, it looks as if it really is Microsoft's vision of the future.

Maybe in the next version of Windows, Microsoft won't even bother to keep "legacy apps" or a traditional desktop mode.

Then, after a while, the classic style of Windows will die out, and the Windows interface will just become another part of history.

peterw007

If whats new works better I'm all for it. Why are people so reluctant to change? Windows 8 does a ton of stuff outside of metro that are all improvements. Yet people of one feature they all get swept under a rug. That I just don't understand.

Oh, I'm not doubting that.

I don't see what companies are thinking. They keep changing stuff, forcing people to relearn. A great example is the new Internet Explorer that hides the meny (archive, edit etc) at the top and other stuff. Even for people like me who is rather accustomed to computers, will have to think for a quick second before finding the solution. But there are PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENTY of others who don't like my uncle who asked me for help when this happened.

Dumb updates make me roar. In fact, doesn't Human-computer interaction teach quite the opposite? Why the hell did I waste my time reading a university course telling us how following standards is great and how it has to feel friendly and understandable blahblah when even the major companies like Microsoft aren't following that ****?

xWoW_Rougex

.. Google Chrome is pretty much the standard and doesnt have that, its all tucked away under one menu instead, because the older taskbars were too cluttered. it IS following modern HCI standards. Older standards are outdated, yes to me and you and your uncle its the norm, but once you get use to the new one its even better. You cant expect software interfaces to remain the same for 50 years ..... its ridiculous.

PC users mock Mac Users no end, but the key difference here is.

MAC Fans support new and fresh ideas, because they like new things both aesthetic and just for a different experiance.

PC Users find every essence of change an insult to their intelligence for no reason other than "Waaaaa ive been using this all my life, why should it change?"

I dislike Macs and still believe windows is ahead of the game on the grander scheme of things, but godamn people think they are good because of it....

Inconsistancy

Metro is fine as a side feature, not as a default setting, for a normal desktop environment. The reason the Windows style UI has existed so long is that it's just good at what it does.

And I don't know where you're going with this at all, because Mac's desktop OS isn't very different than Windows is anyway, it's just ugly gray instead of having any hint of color.. Calling PC users whiners 'cause they want a good desktop environment, and Mac is the moral high ground, but isn't changing that in the first place?

I think they should just make our ui easily modifiable w/o third party programs. Then there'd be, at most, minimal complaints.

But that is a pretty key difference:

Mac: "Omg, shiny new feature, SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY" ::meanwhile:: can't play games(most)

PC: "Ineffecient, hype ignored, I'll save my money"

As I said though, you can set up the metro home screen to pretty much exactly the same as the startmenu infact, fit a hell of alot more into it. So how is it inefficient exactly? thats my arguement. Windows has never made it easy to find new interesting software either, this apps overlay was badly needed.

Most pc users are till using xp and later versions no need to keep upgrading when only a handful of people are going to use it..dumb..

VanDammFan
Whos really dumb here? There will be a massive new set of hardware that will require windows 8 on launch , Tablets, Phones, Touch Laptops, Touch PCs...... XP is ancient, outdated and inferior to windows 7 in pretty much every aspect. Windows 8 is even lighter and adds several great features even for those that do not care for metro.
There's no reason to update to this OS, it feels like mxing in to OSes in one, no cohesive feeling, loss of functionality by loosing the start menu, I wouldn't be surprised if it bombed.FIipMode
What loss of functionality you can set metro to have exactly what you had with the windows start menu on the metro home screen. with just as little clicks. no cohesive feeling? pardon? its different from windows norm yes, but its very easy after alittle bit if playing around. are people so set in thier ways they fergot what it was like to learn a new OS to begin with?

It's the casuals that matters. PCWORLD readers ain't the type Microsoft is aiming at.

Mr_BillGates
True, they allready dominate business and "non-casuals" window 8 does nothing to take away from that.... and gives the windows brand a much needed eco-system across all its devices.
