As long as you have an NGP, thats the ONLY device you actually need to buy. Remember - the Xperia Play and any future phones/tablets simply use PlayStation Suite software to play games. NGP will be capable of playing PlayStation Suite games in addition to its own retail games. So no, you only need one device to play any portable Sony games :)
And when you turn it off, it clearly becomes nothing more than a DS with better graphics...no other innovation.
Which is exactly what the competition has been doing for.. forever.
So Nintendo chucked a winning strategy out the window in exchange for Sony's "beef up the hardware" PS3/PSP approach? Brilliant. Its fairly obvious the 3DS was Nintendo's method to attack PSP head-on. Think about it: analog pad and wide screen were PSPs main desired characteristics. Now the 3DS has both. Oh, the 3D and accelerometer features were added later during development. What does that tell you? :)
Smartphones will be the end of handhelds after this generation. plain and simple. The average consumer does not want to carry two devices, period.
They don't have multiple bags strapped around them like the average nerd in this forum.
Just because you have a PSP or 3DS doesn't mean you need to carry it everwhere you go. Some people play handhelds at home, or at a friends house, etc. People who play them on trains or buses while travelling to work normally tend to carry a backpack, so carrying two devices is never an issue for them.
Nobody was predicting a quick death for handhelds. More like a slow, gradual decline. Make this post in 10 years if we still have dedicated handhelds.

I think they will still exist. May they they won't sell 150 million units like DS, but they will still exist without a doubt. I mean, the NGP is like a "mini-console" with lots of full-featured console games like Call of Duty, etc. So obviously mobile phones cannot compete against NGP when it comes to hardcore gamers :)
