I'm not saying that smartphones/iPads aren't having an effect of the handheld market, but I don't think we'll ever really exactly what effect it is. I also don't think it'll be nearly as large of an effect as some people think it will be.

To me those devices are like PCs. Sure they play games, but that's only one of multiple functions and not the primary function for most users. Sure gaming apps sell, but we don't really know how many people would have bought a 3DS to play games on if smartphones didn't exist.

It's like saying, "100 million people play Farmville. Look how much of the gaming market the PC has." All we really know is that 100 million people are playing a game therefor expanding the gaming population. We don't know that if Farmville didn't exist that those 100 million people would continue to play some other game. Some might, but most would probably find other nongaming alternatives.

Smartphones are not killing handheld consoles, they are simply expanding the handheld gaming market.

the problem is most people do not want to carry around 2 devices a phone and a games system. smartphones are offering lots of very cheap (and sometimes free) fun pick and play games that are perfect for gaming on the go.

Still, we don't know that this is effecting the handheld market. True most people constantly have their phone with them, but I doubt people think about it in the same way. Sure I've seen people in the airport or Dr's offices play games on their phones, but the question remains, "Would those people be sitting there playing a ds/psp if games on smartphones did not exist, or would they be listening to their iPods or reading a book instead. Until we see a steep decline in the sales of handheld consoles and games themselves we can't say that smartphones are really hurting them.

This is a good theory. Most of the people I see playing phone games have never really owned a Gameboy/DS/PSP before. Some of them don't even play consoles or PCs either. They might simply be playing phone games as time-killers and nothing else.

it's too early to call, sales haven't been that amazing in the UK with surplus stock everywhere.

Probably the high price or mediocre launch games are to blame. Either that, or Nintendo actually shipped enough units to meet demand.

There's still 100s of millions of mobile phones about tho. locopatho
Well, we all need smartphones for making calls, surfing the Internet, etc. But having a smartphone doesn't mean I can replace my PSP :P

A lot of people predicted that the 3DS would never sell as good as the DS, mainly because of competition from smartphones and tablets (iPhone, iPad, etc). Well, I guess that those predictions can finally be put to rest, because the 3DS is now the fastest selling handheld gaming system. Yes, the 3DS is selling faster than DS at launch. And I bet the the NGP will sell faster than the original PSP as well. Oh, lets not forget that the NGP can play phone-based games (it is compatible with PlayStation Suite games for Android devices).

As somebody who loves dedicated gaming handhelds, I am happy for this, I am happy that smartphones will not kill handhelds. I appreciate the competition from smartphones, but I certainly don't want handhelds to become extinct.

Your thoughts?

Hopefully people start realizing that 8,5 is actually a very good score.lbjkurono23
I still remember how people laughed at Mass Effect 1 for getting 8.5 here on GS. They acted like as if it was another Lair flop.

No, I found raids and arenas fun.

Not when you have a fulltime job and other stuff to keep you busy. I hate guilds scheduling raids at 7:00pm or whatever and expect you to show up.

Find a better guild? Ive never been forced into a raid.

Some guild members get angry at you don't join raids that they schedule at 6:30pm or stuff like that. Don't know how many do this

Same as any other mp game right?

You grind players endlessly in CoD...right? (which btw, has more hours per player than WoW)

I guess you have never played WoW endgame, right? People play CoD online for fun. People grind in WoW to get shinier gear or upgrade their weapons, etc You are basically pushed into endless raids even if you don't want to do it

Some people find fighting the same instances and improving their characters the same way people find playing the same maps in CoD over and over and grinding to gain ranks/weapons/badges. No different. Apparently repetitive gameplay is only ridiculed if it's an MMORPG here. Your bias is showing.

When people play any standard FPS game online, they just want to shoot stuff for fun. When people raid in WoW, they do it to get all the special equipment and upgrades. The desired equipment are so incredibly rare that you need to spend hundreds of hours of repetitive grinding just to get them. One of my friends grinded monsters for 70+ hours just to get a shield he wanted! He did NOT have fun grinding for 70 hours, he just wanted the shield. Why on earth would you play 70+ hours just for one virtual item? I could beat Dragon Age 2 and Final Fantasy 7 in that same timeframe

[QUOTE="PandaBear86"]MMO's are just grindfests. You play 40 hours a week just to get better gear (raids are so time-consuming). That all MMO's are, and I bet Rift is no differentJankarcop
