Yea there is .. infact only in 1996 I believe did england change their year and a day rule on homicides...

Okay yeah, that was a stupid mispeaking on my part. But isn't the statute of limitations only applied before a defendent is charged? Polanski fled after the charges were brought up against him.

Besides, I don't think most states have a time limit for his felonies anyways.

Correct. Once one has been convicted statutes of limitation no longer matter.....and Polanski had a conviction and was awaiting sentencing.

I'm curious, does statute of limitations apply if you are a fugitive?

Irrelevant, polanski now resides in switzerland which means that their criminal law applies.

Animatronic64

No their criminal law does NOT apply.

Why not?

The crime happened in America, isn't that obvious?

He plead guilty and should be convicted for it. IronBass
He claims he plead guilty under the false notion that he would get no jail time. The judge (who is now dead) then, according to Polanski, went back on his word and was going to send him away.

I have no problem with adult stem cell research. I do have a problem with the fetal variety though.

[QUOTE="Plzhelpmelearn"][QUOTE="T_P_O"] And now that I do know, I can say that it isn't Switzerland's fault because American authorities couldn't sort out the correct paperwork.T_P_O

care to clarify and/or link?

Sure, got two articles from a quick google search giving me the same reason:

Here and here.

I don't know why they failed to show all the paperwork though.

That is kind of messed up. I am curious as to what paper work was missing, someone should be held responsible for this. I blame Obama.

There is no reason to extradite a person who might be guilty of a crime. Prove it first then we'll talk.

If there was sufficient evidence to prove beyond any reasonable doubt then it would have been released on the press to pressure switzerland to extradite polanski. Since this is not the case, we can safely assume that the police have got nothing.

Aku101

If the police have got nothing then a trial will be nothing more than a time inconvenience for Polanski if it even goes to trial. Now he can never set foot in America again. Don't you think he would just take the trial if he knew he wasn't guilty and they had no evidence?

You are presenting a false dichotomy. There can be numerous reasons why Polanski wants to stay in Switzerland.

so my logic is flawed, but you see no flaw in the logic in claiming that because he did not get extradited, there must be no evidence against him?

Doesn't matter. He's still guilty of his crime and refused to serve his sentence.

Oh well, I certainly don't care. His films more than make up for it. It's not like he killed someone.

obvious flame bait is obvious. Can someone really think that making good movies makes up for rape?

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] No they don't....:|LJS9502_basic

Yes they do. Innocent until PROVEN guilty no matter what extraneous circumstances follow. It's to prevent people from pleading guilty due to insanity and using that as a way out.

A guilty plea negates a trial and goes straight to sentencing dude....:|

Yea the only thing is he only confessed guilt to statutory rape (or the equivalent), if he gets extradited then he will be tried on all of the charges that were originally brought against him if my understanding is correct.
