There is no reason to extradite a person who might be guilty of a crime. Prove it first then we'll talk.
If there was sufficient evidence to prove beyond any reasonable doubt then it would have been released on the press to pressure switzerland to extradite polanski. Since this is not the case, we can safely assume that the police have got nothing.
If the police have got nothing then a trial will be nothing more than a time inconvenience for Polanski if it even goes to trial. Now he can never set foot in America again. Don't you think he would just take the trial if he knew he wasn't guilty and they had no evidence?
