I have not played WoW for a year but from what I remembered the game is very inviting to new people. The whole levelling experience and talent system was reworked with new players in mind.
I recommend trying out the trial of the game first.
Playing the Path of Exile open beta really makes it obvious how excellent the interface of Diablo 3 is. The passive skill tree is monstrous and intimidating but it makes progression insanely boring compared to Diablo 3.
Also the community of PoE seems to be entirely comprised of bitter Diablo 2 fans. Someone was called a troll for asking where's the minimap and then the chat channel was flooded with Blizzard hate. I enjoy PoE but I'll play it months after Diablo 3 launches in hopes that people calm the **** down...

Yep, it's basically the same way on the Blizzard forums. You get those self-declared "uber 1337" players from Diablo 2 who get furious when ANYTHING new is announced and how it's a "betrayal" to the old fans. Most reasonable and mature fans have seen the logic behind Blizzard's decisions with D3 but some people are just "so sure" that their own opinion is the only possibility. I literally think these same people would have been creaming their pants if Blizzard literally released Diablo 2 with a new graphics engine and changed NOTHING.
These people are simply delusional and/or blinded with nostalgia. Thankfully they are the minority.
