As of right now I think Portal is the only game this gen that will have that same "classic" status to which you are referring. There have been a lot of great games so far, but nothing that has left a lasting impression on melike Oni, Kingdom Under Fire, or Shadow of the Colossus did last gen. (I won't even touch any of the generations before that.) It's actually quite sad, but most games now-a-days are excellent, but entirely forgettable.

Thats a great way to put it.. many are forgettable...

And the ones that do have amazing Online play and DLC will be lost in time with only the single playing remaning

The Wii is not as effected by this as much as the ps3 or 360 due to its focus on the single player story... however the motion controlls could become very very dated and obsolete

I have high hopes for MGs4 but I have yet to play a truly classic game this generation

One big obstacle for the Wii to overcome is that a large chunk of it's most attractive games are continuations of a series. (i.e Mario, Zelda, Metriod so on so forth.) and while those games were fine and dandy in their own respect, each time you reiterate those characters and settings they lose a bit of their former charm. Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess were marvelous games and I enjoyed them thoroughly thanks in part to the addition of new concepts and, heaven forgive me, gimmicks. But at the core they are still the same game I've seen a dozen times before that that denies them the ever elusive "classic" status.

But Nintendo was never one to curl up and die and is fighting back with some great new I.P's(most of which I havn't played yet) and hopefully when we all look back on this generation in X number of years one of those new games will have struck gold and be remembered in that way.

I only recently started playing Metal Gear Solid games recently (The last few months). I also played them in reverse order which I think was a good mistake to make. The afore-mentioned curse of sequels didn't really apply because I played 2 before 1 so instead of reiterating the events of 1 I was shown all these crazy events that i had no idea about, and when I played 1 later it was like an awesome history lesson. It's weird but in a good way. But I digress. I see MGS 1, 2, and 3 as "classics" and I have high hopes for 4 as well.

Here I go!

Sins:

First off the sheer size of the theatre of war is amazing. Warping fleets of over a hindred ships across a few solar systems to combat the enemy really give you a sense of grandeur. A number of other aspects of the game contribute to the overall warm fuzzy feeling of galactic conquest.

The combination of the tax system for earning credits and the mining and trading to obtain crystal and metal allows for more involvement in resource management. Contently buying and selling resource so you have enough of what you need for your next phase of development and a fun Sim City/Tycoonish feel to the game. The desire for resources is also great motivation to expand your empire, further showcasing the grand scale this game is modeled in.

Tech trees for advancing your society and fleet command as well as your miltary adds a nice bit of variety. A lot of gamers fall into a rut of what steps to take along the tech tree in any given game, which in my eyes, becomes a bit monotonous after time. The extra venues of investment in Sins helps liven up the build order and keeps things fresh.

The set number of tactical and logistical slots each planet has for building can be a bit of an annoyance, but again it serves the purpose of spurring you to expand your empire. A personal knit-pick of mine is that some of the tactical buildings belong in the logistic section and vice-versa, but that's hardly a glaring flaw.

Pirate raid are really annoying. It's easy enough to raise another players bounty at the last second so they take the heat of the next attack(especially if it's a computer player) so the pirates presence in the galaxy really just boils down to a occasional drain of credits and a few sections of space you should avoid traveling through. An annoyance more than anything else really.

No story mode! -10 points!

Just when you think you've won you realize that the enemy has another bas ein some region of the galaxy that you didn't even know existed. This can be a good or bad thing depending on your mood.

I could go on.... but I don't want to.

DoW:

A variety of colorful(to say the least) races. A player can be sure to find at least one faction they can really get behind. (Tau Empire for me). The races are similar enough that choosing any one will give you a good idea on how to play as any of the others, but varied enough that as you get more advanced you will find interesting techniques and tricks only that faction can use.

Simple two resource system (requisition and energy) make it simple to keep track of what you have and need. And the system of using strategic points to gain requisition helps force you to get out and about to explore the map and expand.

Moral system adds nice micromanagement element to combat. Keeping each squad doing what it's meant to do and proper use of unit abilities are essential to keeping your units in the fighting spirit.

Each races super unit is very satisfying to unleash, but the rate at which these super units are replaced is not entirely balanced across the board.

Necrons are a bit overpowered I think. A personal gripe of mine.

In a large scale battle Hero units are, for the most part, insignificant. While in the early stages of a game, an enemy commander showing up can mean your complete downfall. (I'm not sure if this is good or bad.)

I might add more later.

I usually finish the campaign before I move on to getting my ass kicked over the Internet.

My best assumption is that when a character "dies" in battle they are only just knocked out. and the phoenix down revives them from KO. Can anybody remember the item description from a phoenix down in and FF game? Does it say "Revive from KO"? I have a vague recollection that it does.

I was a happy camper while it was still functioning. Now that it's red ringed I'm a little less than enthused about it's performance. But the good times should be back when I get my replacement. There is a hefty heap of games I want to play both out and on the way.

SPOILER* POSSIBLE SPOILER!!!*** for MGS2

Whiny? Try Raiden from MGS 2 or his sidekick - the guy who's sister gets knifed. I hated them. Most irritating dialogue ever.

Canvas_Of_Flesh

Yea, Otacon is fairly whiney, but I'm probably the only one that enjoyed Raiden.

No your not. I though Raiden was alright too.

Jackie Estacado was a pretty one dimensional character. He never displayed any emotion.

I had one giant alternation. Back when I was younger I was a JRPG fiend. Now I seem to be entirely into the Western style. A lot of Bioware and Elder Scrolls really. I'm trying to attai balance now though. I'm trying to find a few JRPGs for my PS2. FFXII specifically since I havn't played it yet and whatever else tickles my fancy. And I may check out Eternal Sonata.

Don't let Turok fool you. Ron Perlman is actually good. Liam Neeson was a bit of a suprise though.

Console games I get used if I can since it's cheaper. If the game I want just came out and I can't wait(which is usually the case) I get it new lickety split.

With PC I prefer to get them new from the store. Used PC games usually blow up in my face with invalidated CD keys and such. Plus I like actually physically having the game which is why I prefer stores over online. I do purchase some games online though, under certain circumstances. (i.e download only games like audiosurf or older games that would be hard to find in stores.)
