I'm getting fed up with this. It happens too often with movies. Don't call it a REVIEW if you aren't willing to give it a score. You come across as either being cowards or disingenuous or opportunists without follow-through. IF you're aren't going to score it then call it something else, a preview or a pre-review, anything but a review. So please get your act together GameSpot. BTW, no slight intended on those in the video itself.
Personally I liked the movie, but it has a number of problems (as mentioned by many others in many different places), so I wouldn't call it a great movie. But I will add it to my movie collection when it comes out.
@interceptor70: Okay. I saw Haley Atwell on a YouTube video of Craig Ferguson's Late Night and she had a ponytail. And yes, she would probably do a fine Lara Croft. The shape of her face isn't quite right, but she'd be better than many other actresses. I'd at least add her to my list (which seems to be slowly growing). Problem is I think the studio is looking for a young actress to play Lara, and Haley might not fit the bill, not to mention her commitment to Agent Carter, etc. In the end I really hope they make a good choice.
@interceptor70: You're welcome to your opinion, but I'm not convinced regarding Haley Atwell. It might be different if I saw her decked out as Lara Croft. Until then, I'm holding out. But another name came to my attention, Alice Eve from Star Trek: Into Darkness. She's blonde, but that can be easily remedied. But I think another great potential actress for the part..
@rlemonache: This is a minor point, and easily remedied. You don't think Angelina Jolie didn't have her beasts enhanced when she played the role? Probably one of the reasons she didn't want to do a third movie. Acting talent, ability to do stunts, flawless British accent, and having the right look and demeanor to match Lara Croft are most important.
@slickr: I like your suggestion of Lyndsy Fonseca (I wish I would have thought of it). Great out of the box thinking. Great choice based on her awesome work in Nikita. It's this kind of thinking that had me include Tatiana Maslany in my top 12 list. Unfortunately (as much as I like her) I think Kate Beckinsale is too old for the actress they are looking to play Lara in the new movie. I do know that Tatiana can nail a British accent. Lyndsy would have to be capable of the same. But brilliant idea. She would fit somewhere in the top half of my list (especially if she can do the accent).
@holenjd: You're more than welcome to have your own opinion. I just think that Camilla Luddington was picked especially to be a voice actor for the video games. Her appearance was not a factor - didn't matter for a video game. And I do not think voice acting is interchangeable with screen acting. In fact I will make two points in this regard about Camilla: [1] She looks nothing like the animated character she voices in the video games, and [2] if you look her up on IMDB you will see she has rather sharp facial features and doesn't have the right look for Lara Croft. This does not mean she wasn't excellent in the video games (because she has been) and it doesn't mean she isn't also a good screen actress or isn't good looking. No. It means she isn't the best fit for Lara Croft "on screen" in a "movie", and I want to see a movie about the Tomb Raider who is cast with the best possible actress who is also the best match for Lara's look and demeanor. To me this rules out Camilla (and you're free to disagree). Regardless. I wish her every success.
And yes, I did a bit of research on young British actresses, trying to find those who would be a pretty good match for Lara's looks. I wanted to provide some substance to this discussion than just a simple opinion. Hopefully it opens doors to possibilities and more of a conversation then a mere posting of one liners.
I think Daisy would be a fine choice. She could be an awesome fit after make-up, costumes, and training (so she becomes a very different character from Rey). But we don't know much of anything at this point. Here are my top 12 for the part.
1. Sophia Cookson (Kingsman) 2. Daisy Ridley (Star Wars 7) 3. Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones, Terminator) 4. Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans, Prince of Persia, Hansel & Gretel) 5. Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) 6. Emma Watson (Harry Potter, etc. - could pull it off because she is so good) 7. Anna Popplewell (Narnia Chronicles, Reign) 8. Adelaide Kane (Reign) 9. Michelle Ryan (Bionic Woman, Doctor Who, Covert Affairs) 10. Rebecca Night 11. Gemma-Leah Devereux 12. Lauren Cohan
I don't think Hayley Atwell has the right look and although I love Camilla Luddington's voice acting for the character in video games, she too does not have the right look. My 2 bits.
Here are my top 10 actresses for playing Lara Croft in the movie:
Rebecca Night or Gemma-Leah Devereux
These seem to fit the appearance of Lara Croft and many of them would be familiar with action sequences. though some are shorter than others.
Honorable mention goes to:
- Camilla Luddington (great voice work in the video games, but doubt she has the look or ability to pull it off) - Elizabeth Hestridge (doesn't seem to have the right look or combination of toughness and sophistication) - Hayley Atwell (Doesn't seem to have the right Lara look, but can do the stunts) - Lauren Cohan (might be the closest of this bunch)
That's my 2 bits on which actresses could play Lara Croft. I hope the movie is not a video game translated nearly verbatim onto the big screen. Yes, some human elements, but she must be heroic, tough and inspiring - a female Indiana Jones. Elements from the games should be present, but this should be a big screen adaptation that focuses on character growth, exploration, puzzles, mysteries, with only appropriate action where it makes sense. Lara is best when she uses her intelligence, whits, and athletic agility. And she must be comfortable playing a sophisticated aristocrat or a gritty treasure hunter.
