Im wanting to get a PS3 in order to get a feel for the console. The fact is, im moving out of the country in 4-6 months time and i need all the money i can get.

I think you have answered you own question. Just wait, and get one in the other country - it will be no doubt cheaper too. Technology will only get cheaper and your have something else to look forward too.
Just to add my thoughts: Fat Princess needs a lot of time. You start matching a match thinking it will take 5-10mins but 30 mins later you are still playing. Its fun just one its hard to put down. as for Burn Zombie, its fun but a little 'short'. ie. there is different levels and objectives but the game is very similar. Shatter is quite fun with good music. Depends if you enjoy break-out styled games?
sorry to hear - never nice to hear. Any content you have paid for can be used up-to 5 PS3 - so you should be ok. If you can power-up the console (if you had that option), you could try and de-active your old PS3 and get back one of your 'active' PS3's spaces (something I forgot to do when my PS3 drive failed). I am guessing active PS3 stay on your account forever? I know what you mean about repairing PS3's too. Whist it may be cheaper, you do get a new warranty and hopefully get a 'good' PS3. Have you tried holding eject then switching the console on, to eject the disc?
