Another vote for STALKER, but that probably won't stop you from going out and getting QW or Bioshock instead since they look so much cooler in the gameplay videos.

What is it that makes this game so addictive? The competition of having better gear than the next guy? How popular would this game be if it was singleplayer with a bunch of AI bots? That would effectively remove the competitive aspect.

All of them. Portal was a pleasant surprise. STALKER was also a high note. Pretty much everything else has been overhyped/overrated trash.

EA doesn't give a rip whether old-time fans like it or not. They know that hordes of zombies will come out of the woodwork and pay $20/month for anything that has MMORPG and Star Wars in the title.

This is the main reason EA bought Bioware in the first place.

They want to ride the MMO money train to nickel and dimesville.

Extra content? Ka-ching!

Tie-dyed lightsabers = $$$

I'm just impressed that the OP properly used 'affected' instead of 'effected', which I see all too often.

Overrated, but not bad. After finishing, it was quickly forgotten (and sold). It was pretty well-polished by today's standards.

Poor graphics and animations, weak sound effects/silly voiceovers, no music, derivative gameplay, awkward UI, clipping/sticking, disappearing monsters, linear, repetitive levels, screwy skills, bad AI, AND you get lovely in-game advertising complete with the latest spyware/monitoring software.

In short: I fv@k1ng love this game!

Last time I checked, Far Cry had multiple difficulty settings. This one will too. In the second half of the game you'll be fighting aliens anyway, which I guarantee will be a helluva lot tougher than North Korean army grunts.
