Assuming you're talking about Fallout Tactics, it's not super popular online, but people do still play it on GameRanger. There's usually a few hundred games played per week.

Well, since you're asking for sci-fi, there's always Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds and its expansion Clone Campaigns. These are separate games, not mods, but they use the Age of Empires II engine.

Although Zone was shut down in June 2006, you can still play SWGB and Clone Campaigns on GameRanger. Your post is timely because just last week, I added features to automatically restore saved multiplayer games of SWGB/CC. This means you can stop a multiplayer game with your friends any time, and continue later where you left off.

Thank you both for the info. Civ 4 looks like a good bet, then. But what is the "port" a Mac thing? (Forgive my ignorance! :) )

In this case, it means taking the PC version and converting it to run properly in Mac OS X. This means some parts of the game need to be rewritten.

There is no Mac version of any of the Total War series yet, though Rome: Total War is currently being ported as a classic title. If he's using BootCamp, then there's no need for the PC vs Mac question, since he can't run any PC game. The Mac and PC versions of Civilization IV are compatible in network multiplayer, so they should be compatible with PBEM as well.

[QUOTE="REforever101"]

holy hell, thats awesome. dark forces II was one of my all time favorite games!

-wildflower-

I remember wasting so much time playing that game on the now defunct Microsoft Gaming Zone that it's not even funny. Really good times.

Zone was shut down, but you can still play Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II and Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith online with GameRanger. In fact, there's even a little known demo for JK: DF2 that you can also play online. Edit: Fixed bad auto-smiley.

Good timing. I just added multiplayer support for Ground Control, Ground Control: Dark Conspiracy, and Ground Control 2: Operation Exodus to GameRanger last week. The official servers for GC1 were shut down in November last year. The GC2 servers are still running, but then you'd have to struggle with the pain of GameSpy and router problems if you used them.

Just remember that Xfires counts the users and time the game is running, not the users and time spent playing online. It includes all those playing single player.

Unfortunately, Sierra shut down the servers for Empire Earth and Art of Conquest on November 1, 2008. A lot of people still play these online with GameRanger, because it solves their firewall and router problems automatically.
