Multiplayer matchmaking in DoW II is worse than in DoW/WA/DC/SS in every possible way, even taking in consideration that Gamespy system in first DoW was far from perfection -very far-. Games For Windows Live system ups the limits of the un-desirable, nerfed interface, useless malware to a new heights. IMO GFWL is a initiative to avoid. I buy DoW II and the game is good but not as nice as DoW; about F.E.A.R. 2, I will not buy/play this one; overall reviews are not as good as in the firsty title and I'm not interested in games ruled by Steam and/or GFWL systems.Ondoval
For what it's worth, there's now an alternative to GameSpy in DoW 1. GameRanger. A simpler way, without the buggy connection problems of GameSpy.

I also discovered GameRanger recently! Seems like a nice program but I haven't gotten around to using it, but I fear it's the last option for me and a mate to play Age Of Empires 2 together.

Scott: Do you know if GameRanger supports Medievel 2 CAMPAIGN multiplayer? That would be amazing.ShotGunBunny
Good question. My memory is a little hazy, but I think you can do a Medieval II campaign in multiplayer using GameRanger. Edit: It's not just the last option for Age of Empires II. It's the best. AoE2 is normally a pain to play directly because of the port-forwarding/router issues. These disappear when you use GameRanger.

Thanks everyone.
I never even heard of gameranger, so i just got done installing and setting up my log in.. this is really interesting! There are over 500+ newer and classic games that work on this service that id want to play. Im gonna try this out a bit more, this looks like a nice place to find other players, especially for RTS gamesTyson8earzz
Yeah, you probably haven't heard about it because it only came out for the PC three months ago, and unfortunately none of the PC gaming news sites thought it was newsworthy. Despite that, it's growing pretty quickly as more people discover it and tell their friends. If you like it, please spread the word!

This depends on what you're really looking for. GameSpy Arcade was supposed to be a matchmaking service to help you play online, but it does nothing to help people with routers and firewalls. It's also slow and bloated, and rams ads down your throat at every chance. It hasn't really been updated for a long time, and it has basically been dumped by GameSpy. Xfire is basically a communicator and not much more. You see people using the logo in forums because Xfire tracks how many hours you've spent playing games. It has limited support for joining existing game servers, but does not help you host your own games. There's also no real multiplayer support for RTS games (or any non-FPS games, for that matter). It does have some other features, but they aren't really related to playing online. Comrade is GameSpy's me-too panic-response to Xfire. No one uses it because it's also slow and bloated, and doesn't offer anything people didn't already have. There is another new entrant to PC gaming: GameRanger. Unlike the others, GameRanger is the only one that really helps you play online, especially for RTS games, because it completely solves router and firewall problems. GameRanger also has full lobby support for over 500 games (that's more than any other service). It's lightweight, fast, and easy to use, and the installer is a mere 115 KB download so you'll be up and running in no time. If you're looking for something along the lines of XBox Live, a unified place to play all your games online, the best answer is GameRanger.

Get on GameRanger. It's the easiest way to play AoEII online. Edit: And over 500 other games as well.

Heh, you've dug up quite an old thread. Try playing Stronghold: Crusader using GameRanger. Although GameRanger is primarily an online gaming service, it also tends to solve problems playing on a LAN that you're seeing now.

It happens in all communities, unfortunately. The best option is to only play people you know. That was actually the main reason why I created GameRanger.

GameRanger. Are 13,000 CoD4 servers enough? :)

Giants: Citizen Kabuto which was by the same developers (PlanetMoon) that later made Armed and Dangerous.
