Company of Heroes is probably the best, but there are others worth considering as well. War Front: Turning Point - A different take on how WWII could have turned out. Rush for BerlinRush for Berlin: Rush for the Bomb - Expansion for Rush for Berlin that GameSpot doesn't seem to have a listing for. These all have single-player demos, and all except Company of Heroes have multiplayer demos you can try, too.

Yeah, Joint Task Force is what I was going to suggest as well, though it's a little strange compared to most RTS games.

Nice thread resurrection. Battlestations: Midway is another that loosely fits this description.

Ahh, I wasn't aware of that, thanks. I know they talked about doing this, but they mustn't have made a very big announcement about its release. I've just read some more about it though. It's basically a download portal. There's no friends list or messaging of any kind. Kind of pointless, imho.

There is no standalone client for GfWL. There is for GameRanger, of course. :)

It's saying "Play Dawn of War" because it is already installed. It's quite common for installers to do that, not many installers offer an option to repair. If you really want to completely restore it, below "Play Dawn of War" there should be an Uninstall option. Uninstall it and wait for that to complete, then you'll be able to Install it again.

The main issue is not latency (ping) nor bandwidth (capacity), but packet loss. TCP streams (web browsing, downloads, etc). tend to be reasonable at handling packet loss, but most games suffer with it. Always go wired if you can.

While it's true that most FPS games with multiplayer support LAN, there are some danger signs of game companies trying to lock down their games so that you have to be logged into their online service to do LAN play, or worse, no LAN play at all with the only option being online play.
