Tri-Ace has pooped out games better than the best Level 5 games.

They're merely placeholders until FF13 drops, and that tells you everything about the quality of their work.

110million

All Tri-Ace did last-gen was poop, nothing they released was close to the PS1 quality in their games, so theres no reason to believe they'll release better games now. Last gen, Level 5 made a name for itself, with several quality RPGs, like DQ8, Rogue Galaxy, Jeanne D'arc and non-RPG titles as well like Proffesor Layton, Tri-Ace hasn't released an amazing RPG since PS1.

Did you play Radiata Stories?

It had the most genuinely alive, vibrant jrpg setting last gen, hands down. Characters actually had lives and things to do...

VP Silmeria was the anticipated followup to VP, and none of the games L5 developed approach it in storytelling and characterization.

Star Ocean 3 was a miss, but it still pooped on Rogue Galaxy, aka the game with the invisible walls of linearity.

Jeanne D'Arc?

The gameplay was completely generic, aside from the awful powah uppage of the hyper mode, to the totally wtf take on French history.

The only claim to fame for the game were the high production values, which made it stand out since srpgs are known for their ugliness.

If JDA wasn't half as pretty, nobody would mention it, period.

The best games L5 makes are the Layton games, and they sell the best too. That's their niche.

At least Tri-Ace have made gems....Wtf has L5 done?

I don't understand why people are suddenly making it seem like Sony has always had the best hardware....

That's been Nintendo from day one.

This is the first gen where they're not on par, or above the competition, and suddenly it's a longstanding tradition?

GTFO.

Gamecube, not as powerful as the Xbox, but capable of great things, efficiently designed.

Same with N64 and it's edge on ps1, and SNES and Genny.

Have you all forgotten the faulty ps1 and ps2 hardware?

Let Nintendo make the console(it'll last longer), let Microsoft fund the expensive projects, and let Sony offend the consumers intelligence with big boasts.

Ragnarok1051

What games are you talking about?

The best level 5 ip is Dark Cloud 2.

Which is owned by Radiata Stories, the weakest game Tri-Ace made last gen.

It's odd.

People always say Sony brought gaming to a new market, but i don't see that now, and i didn't see it ten years ago.

The same people i recall playing games when i was at my babysitters house, are the same people who buy them now.

I grew up in the inner city, where you couldn't wear certain colors because it might be gang affiliated in the early 90's.

My babysitters younger brother(3 years my senior) and his friends would play nintendo for an hour or two, then go outside and play basketball and football till the streetlights came on.

These guys were the athletes in high school later, and they went from nintendo - Genesis, to playstation.

And i knew countless people like this.

It wasn't a nerd only hobby.

The only thing about gaming that might have been nerd specific, was the people who subscribed to the magazines like Gamepro, etc.

It's like any medium, where growth occurs gradually over time.

Not gonna jump the gun like the threadstarter, but if any company could make the best jrpg, it's Tri-Ace.

Made the jrpg with the most genuinely alive setting last gen in Radiata Stories.

Improved upon the second best jrpg of the ps1 era with Silmeria.(ValProfile was top of the line, only surpassed by Chrono Cross imo)

Tri-Ace has the pedigree and the history.

The only way they could make it a better game, would be to have Itoi write the script.

Unique gameplay and great rewards? Tri-Ace all the way.

Lol at anyone who mentions WKC.

I kinda wish we could go back to them(outrageous prices notwithstanding).

They eliminated load times for the most part, were terrible for video compression, so they forced developers to render using in-game graphics alone, and damn if they weren't hella durable.

Disk read errors(wtfis that?).

The only aspect of worth to the cd imo, is the cheapness of it. Aside from that, cartridges were a godsend.

Really?

Level 5 has yet to make a game that felt as alive as Radiata Stories.

They've yet to make a game as unique as Valkryie Profile.

Silmeria alone thrashes their catalogue.

Dark Cloud 2 is the best game they've made, yet it apes better games.

Level 5 makes games that ape stalwarts of the genre they peep in.

Call me when they undertake something like IU, or Radiata Stories, for that matter.

And while SO3 was a hit or miss type of game, the first two are great.

One offshoot game doesn't ruin a series.

I will say this tho.....They do make their generic games hella pretty.

Seriously?

Someone made a thread about how 360 has no rpgs worthwhile, but then goes on to list WKS in the same breath as FF13.

Really?

Tri-Ace has made better games than anything Level 5 did, yet they get disregarded?

Boggles my mind.

Radiata Stories, Valkryie Profile:Silmeria, Star Ocean 3, Valkryrie Profile, Star Ocean:The Second Story.

Dark Cloud, Dark Cloud 2, Rogue Galaxy, Jeanne D'Arc.

There is no comparison.

I find it appalling that anyone can say that they're not excited about several Tri-Ace games, but then mention Level 5 in the next breath as some sort of champion of greatness.

Level 5 hasn't made a rpg game on the level of Radiata Stories, the weakest Tri-Ace game developed yet, but somehow WKS changes all that?

I can plausibly understand someone putting FF13 on par with them(not my feelings personally, but meh) but a level 5 game?

Did you not play Dark Cloud 1-2, Rogue Galaxy or Jeanne D-Arc? Dark Cloud 2 is the best game they've made yet, but it's merely a 3.5/5 game.

Level 5 is the Insomniac of Japan.

Good, fun and competent, but don't you dare put down Tri-Ace and have the gall to big up Level 5. Don't you dare.
