...that's stupid. Count me out. *quick nod*
Anyway, that's not why I came here, lol. Lately I've been putting a lot of thought into what needs to be changed in SFIV. I checked out a bunch of ideas from the shoryuken.com forums, and I don't know how I feel about a lot of those suggestions. To me, this game just needs to be tweaked in many small ways, rather than seeing huge overhauls to the entire system, character mechanics, and so on.
For example, I think that if Ken could Ultra out of his Shoryuken the way Ryu does - and I'm talking about the big cheesy-smile version, not the weaker, classic Shinryuken that usually comes out - that would be enough to get people playing him again. Not that there's a shortage of Ken players online, but the pros have virtually abandoned him in favor of the much safer, dare I say easier, Ryu.
As a matter of fact, I think that dependable, strong Ultras have everything to do with determining which characters get played. Consider the top characters if you're not sure what I mean. Ryu, Sagat, Rufus, Rog, and to some extent Akuma, Abel, and Viper - all of these characters have sure-fire, feasible ways to get their Ultras off. On top of that, their Ultras are considerably strong and don't get dinged as much by damage scaling as other characters, such as Sakura, who generally has to do a combo of 3 or more hits to guarantee her Ultra. I think it's a combination of the power of the Ultra, as well as how easy it is to land, that makes all the difference. Rose's Ultra is, arguably, very solid. But when you consider it does whiffle-ball-bat damage, it doesn't count for much.
Bah, I'm getting ranty. I guess I'm really scared that when SFIV gets updated, the devs are going to "fix" its current problems by simply replacing the current god-/high-tier characters with new ones (pray for Sagat's jewels... DC predicts full-on castration). As far as I can see, the characters themselves each only need the slightest little tweaks to balance them out. The game engine itself, well... suffice to say there are quirks in SFIV that I think we should just live with (like long, strong block strings, slow throws, etc.), and others that really need attention. Ever been thrown out of an EX move? Of course you have, and you probably female-dogged about it. Rightly so, too, because that's pure nonsense. It's supposed to be: attack>throws>block>attack. Currently, it's a bit of a crapshoot, and we don't like crapshoots.
/rant. Thoughts, anyone, before I submit my full list of suggested character tweaks and other changes?
