As a lifelong fanboy of the franchise, this game is ALMOST the best game I have EVER played. The only thing stopping it is The story. Not even the story itself, just the lack of closure from its abrupt and out of nowhere ending, the fact that its clearly missing its 3rd chapter, and the MGS2-tier "twist" at the "end" was such a comedown off of what would have been the greatest high of my gaming life. It literally undid all of the good will accrued over the past 100 hours. Like everbody, I cycled through an amalgamation of all five stages of grief at the "twist" (denial, anger, barganing, depression, acceptence), and a day later after the initial bitterness, I didnt even hate the twist as much as the lack of closure at all of the many plot threads that they set up and then just ignored.
Eli, Sahalanthropus, and baby Mantis, and the fucking nuke a bunch of 12 year olds stole, etc. The third vial of the fucking virus. Hell, the second vial of the virus that Eli has.
There is also things that have been in every trailer for the game since 2013 (including recent near launch trailers) that were not there. What and where the hell was that flaming "whaling ship" that has been prominently shown in every single trailer for the past 2 years as if it was important, but only showed up in ONE cutscene in the entire game (the same cutscene from the trailers) and is never seen, explained or talked about again? The lack of development in Quiet's story. She basically doesnt even matter and I would have loved to see her story explained more. Also, Kaz's whole speech about one of them being a spy and the whole "eyes on kazuhira" thing. obviously the cut mission 51 and 3rd chapter, etc......
Also, the ending. Hey you know all that powerful character development and respect you built up for BB in just the last mission before the ending? JK none of that shit mattered.
That being said, from a gameplay standpoint alone ,this is the best Metal Gear Solid ever made, and possibly the best action game ever made.
