I'll refrain from the most common first and third party answers people always give (and have already given) in these threads, and choose games like L.A. Noire, and the Dead Space series.
The hate campaign L.A. Noire got was unjust. It was one of the best examples of Rockstar's unmatched ability to create immersive periodic atmospheres (dear god I hate that I just typed all that pretentious shit out). On top of its top notch writing, and cast of actors, great graphics, and facial animations, I was invested in the story and the mechanics. I cared about getting each case right, and if I failed, I exited the game and reloaded my save each time until I solved the case properly. One of my favorite games of last generation. The only real negative thing about it (which can and was also explained away by the drama between Rockstar and Team Bondi) was the lack of stuff to do. L.A. Noire had the biggest and most detailed map of any Rockstar game (GTAV's was "bigger" on paper, but the vast majority of that was desert, plainlands, and mountains, while L.A. Noire's entire map was a To-Scale street-accurate representation of Los Angeles). This was by far R*'s biggest, most detailed, and ambitious map in all of their games, there just wasnt anything to do in them. No "real" side missions. but to make matters worse, you get the ability to fast travel to every mission area VERY early on in the game meaning you have even less reason to actually ever SEE any of the city.
And while I just wrote that essay about L.A. Noire, and am thus too tired to do the same for my next game, I hate seeing the DEAD SPACE franchise constantly left out of Top 20/Top 10 lists.
