This blog is a reponse to pokecharm's community "Call to Action."
I'll start by telling you why I joined Gamespot, why I continued using it, and how I feel about it now. I'll see if I can bring up any particular points through my writing.
Why I joined Gamespot?
Like a lot of other people I've come to know, I first came across this site when I was looking for some game cheats for a particular game that I don't remember. At that time, I was never a part of any other video game centered site, and all I would do was Google "[game's name] cheats" and pick the first search result. After that, my memory is unclear, as I don't really record my every instance of discovery. Basically, I found out that Gamespot provided, above all, video game news. From then on, I was a regular Gamespot visitor, but only as a guest. Finally, the uncontrollable urge to comment on news articles and videos and give thumbs ups/downs overtook me, then I joined.
What did I use Gamespot for?
Initially, Gamespot was simply my source of video game information. One big use I had for Gamespot was its reviews, particularly the offical ones (side note: wanting to rate a game was another reason for signing up). I always considered the user reviews whenever I looked into buying a game (I never walk into a video game store without some idea of the games currently available). However, as I got more familiar with the site, I started skipping the user review section all together. There was a severe lack of professionalism in the user reviews.
After I joined the site, I stumbled upon something that I never knew existed... my user profile. From there I discovered emblems, the ability to add friends, unions, and, of course, blogs. The first union I ever joined was a Pokemon fan club with a name I cannot remember. I quit that union soon after...because, at the time, I had no idea how I was supposed to participate in a union and its activities.
I'm not sure how it happened (might I direct you to my first blog?), but I gradually started blogging. I never really opened up other people's profiles, much less track anyone, but somehow people were finding me, and so I tracked them. Before I knew it, I was "Popular."
The last feature I started using on this site was the forums. This part of my memory is also unclear, but, as you might have guessed...I went to the forums, and my friends list grew even more.
How do I feel about Gamespot now?
Right now, I visit Gamespot to read other people's blogs and post mine just as much as I do to get gaming news. I've been continuously using this site for the same reasons outlined above. One of the biggest differences, then and now, is that I now trust Gamespot review scores much less. Then again, it all boils down to opinion. For the most part...mostly, Gamespot is fair with reviews.
One thing I hate about Gamespot is its unending plague of bugs and errors. Gamespot needs to slow down with the site features and look back at all these glitches...though that's not a very good idea with Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and everything coming up in between for GS in the next months. Still, I wouldn't mind if Gamespot was shut down for two whole weeks if they promised no more glitches when the site returns.
The glitches include but are not limited to level freeze, HTML errors (when not using HTML!), buncheduptext (resulting from bugs relating to HTML), and missing emblems.
Something that needs to be changed is the method of giving out emblems. More importantly, we need a more efficient way of reporting emblem errors. I'm not happy with The Missing Emblems Thread in the technical issues board, not at all.
I'm currently missing the Here there be Pirates! emblem:
Not to mention the glitchy game collection emblems.
Those emblems have been marked glitched for a looong time now. Where's the progress?
Aside from the glitch removal, I also want better blog feature. For starters, why can't we embed YouTube videos into our blogs? I know we can use videos that have been uploaded to Gamespot, but...have you ever tried uploading a video? It's not a fun process. Uploading images is painstaking as well...why the long wait? Gamespot shoudimprove its image/video hosting services.
One last thig I'd like to add...
Now, a lot of people say that they hate the site since the last redesign. I disagree, I mean, it's just as accessible as it was before (community features discussed next). However, I absolutely hated the fact that we could not simply add games to our games lists without following the game. Also, we can't tag games anymore (well, you can if you go to the Answers page of a game, but what's point of doing that every time?).
The Community
While pokecharm's blog focuses more about the lack of community representation, mine is more about the general problems I have with Gamespot. I do agree though, that there needs to be a better site oriantation so that we get just as much informative news as we do entertaining user blogs. Have you ever heard of the Community Blog? If not, then that's one of the issues that needs to be addressed. The Community Blog is a blog that handpicks and previews user created content from the site. Things like blogs, user videos, and user reviews are all included. One option of solving the problem of meaningless user reviews is automatically pushing the reviews that get chosen for the community blog to the top of the list on that game's gamespace. Speaking of which, have you ever heard about the Gamespace Banner Union? You see those little banners in the middle of a game's page on GS? Did you know that those are made by GS members, not staff? It would be great if we could come up with other cool ideas for the community, just like the banner union.
I've heard a lot of people complain about the Soapbox being removed from the homepage. I actually had no idea that it even existed until I came across the soapbox emblem, the one you get when your blog is chosen for the soapbox. I don't recall ever seeing a link to the soapbox in the homepage...something is awfully wrong with my powers of observation...or my memory. It IS there though, under the Culture tab. Anyway, the soapbox should really have more presence on this site, as should the Community Blog.
Idea Time!
What if...we had a site to-do list, where we can put links of our favorite site features, in one convenient space, like in our profiles or in a tab in that row up there. Then the list would automatically update whenever there's something new with the particular feature. Basically, a "follow" button for a feed, but for things other than games or users.
That's all :)
Now's your turn.
Write a feedback blog with the title "Dear Gamespot"
make sure you mark the category as "Editorial"
OH! Let's not forget....
Ahem... :| We need an explanation for the above
EDIT:
I must add...
Gamespot, please, PLEASE, get rid of that NEW! sign next to "My Achievements"
It's been a while, it's NOT new anymore. Also, Fuse is not as new, either...
I'm back! (v.3)
I'm sure you know the reason...school and all...
BUT! At this point, I'm at a steady work pace, so you should expect to see some more blog postsfrom me. Let me start with, of course, what games I've been playing...
Since my last blog, I've started playing three, and aquiredfour, different games. The last game is Portal, which was free on Steam last month, for a certain time. FYI, I've already played and completed the original Portal, but the game wasn't mine. I played it on a friend's computer. This is really great because now I have the option of going for the 100% andgetting all the achievements. There are only 19 achievements, granted they're not all a walk in the park, but still...19 achievements is doable. This game shall be completed by me 100%! I have to find a way to make it run on my computer first...it lacks CPU. What happens if I continued playing the game under the minimum requirements?
Speaking of game achievements...have you noticed that achievement tracking is back on GameSpot? It's only for Xbox 360 and Steam achievements, but it's progress nonetheless. It would appear that GameSpot ditched Raptr for achievement/trophy tracking on Fuse, andinstead partnered up with Playfire. I went ahead and made myself a Playfire account and linked it to GS, but the trophies...oh wait, PSN supporthasn't been added yet...Well, it should still work with my Steam account (I have a few Steam achievements from the free Steam games, and also the Portal 2 achievements which are unlocked even if you only play the PS3 version). Game achievements aside, I'm also about to pass a milestone in site achievements, AKA GameSpot emblems. I now currently have 43 different emblems, and I should also get the Game Expert and100% Club emblems once the trophies/achievements are synced up with the site.
I'll post it in my next blog(s) when I reach 50 emblems :)
Now, back to the other three games I acquired:
Cave Story
At some point right before my prolonged absence from GameSpot, I found out that the PC version of Cave Story, a popular Wii/DSi downloadable that will soon have a full 3DS sequel, is FREE (not the Wii/DSi and 3DS ones though). I've heard that this game was really awesome, but since I could never collect all my Nintendo points in one place (some points on the DSi, some on the Wii) I was never able to buy it. For some reason, I never bothered to look up the PC version. Anyway, I played through a good chunk of the game, mostly because I'd completed every other game I had at the time, andI do recommend that you play it. I stopped playing about half-way through, because at that point I bought the other two games that I'll mention next.
Here's a link for the game's site. You can download the game there. Also, make sure you downloadthe English patch, as the game is originally in Japanese.
Uncharted Dual Pack
Yes, I bought the Uncharted Dual Pack! It comes with two games, Uncharted and Uncharted 2, and a tsunami of extra content, such as avatars and skin packs for the multiplayer gun battle in UC2. Most of it is junk though...I'm not so sure about Pinball Heroes...Anyway, I didn't get much of a chance to play this as I was on the go a lot, but I got so into the game yesterday that I went from the 10th chapter in the first game all the way to the end, Chapter 22. By the 11thchapter, I found out that I had to beat the game on Hard difficulty to unlock the Crushing difficulty. I'm keen on 100 percenting this game, so I went into the options menu and changed the difficulty. But of course, I only got that trophies for Easy and Normal (you get the trophies for the lesser difficulties automatically). I really hope that if I start a new game on hard, it will give me the trophy for hard by the 11th chapter. I gave the game an 8.0 in the end, partly because of GS's 0.5 point intervals for scoring. I would have given it a 7.8...ish score. The game, overall, is great. It's fun, sure, but it's pretty repetitive. I really wish there were more puzzle, exploration,or platforming segments in between all the gun fights. And also...
What was up with the zombies in around Chapter 18? The game was fairly realistic (except for Nate's awesome superhuman jumping abilities) throughout, then suddenly...BAM! Sci-Fi or whatever you might call it... It didn't make much sense, yes I know it was that mummy gas that made them zombie-like, but it doesn't fit in all that well.
I was told that Uncharted 2 is much better, and that it will blow my mind. We'll see then.
Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy Uncharted (1), I'm just trying to be fair for the review score.
Last but certainly not least, the other game I bought is...
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
Ta-Da! I FINALLY got it! No, I never played the original before. Yes, I enjoyed it a lot. And yes, I'm now officially proud to own a 3DS. As I said before, I've been on the go a lot since I bought these games, so it's only natural that I've played with it a LOT more than Uncharted. In fact, I beat this game ONE-HUNDRED PERCENT. I did everything from getting all 20 heart containers to the quest for Biggoron'sSword. I didn't complete the Master Quest (2nd playthrough) though, and I made that clear in my list of 100%'d games.
My final score for the game is...10!...really, where you surprised? Read theGame Spot3DS review for the game...my thoughts exactly. Except I never played the original, so this would have been kind of repetitive for someone who did, thus the lower score from GS.
Soon after I finished up with Ocarina of Time, I started playing the original The Legend of Zelda on my 3DS that I got from the 20 free games ambassador program. As always, I was careful to collect every heart container, every item, and every weapon upgrade...yes, I beat this game 100%, and, like Ocarina of Time, I didn't go for the SecondQuest. You know what's really awesome though? The Legend of Zelda is the 25th game to make it onto my 100% list, and this year is Zelda's 25th anniversary. Cool, right? :D
As a way of celebrating the 25th anniversary of Zelda, Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition free for DSi and 3DS owners (it's free now until the endof the year/early next year). The original Zelda Four Swords was a bonus game that came with the DX/Game Boy Advance edition of A Link to the Past. The game was multiplayer only and required GBA link cable(s) and as many Game Boy Advance systems and A Link to the Past games as there are players. Because of all the fuss it took to play one simple game of Four Swords, the game wasn't that popular. However, we now have wireless multiplayer, and the game is free, so it's pretty easy to start playing. Now, the anniversary edition DOES have a single player mode, but according to IGN's reviewof the game (it came up on a Google search...), it's not nearly as fun as playing with friends. The single player mode involves taking turns by switching between two players with the L and R shoulder buttons. I guess it works okay with solving puzzles, but I can imagine the whole thing might be awkward during combat or action packed sequences in the game. The problem for me is that I don't know anybody willing to play with me :( My younger sister is the closest thing to a co-op buddy I have, but there's a huge gap in video game experience between us...so I end up being the babysitter and making sure she doesn't screw up while we're playing.
Other than my extremely casual video gamer sister, my immediate family isn't that into video games. Recently though, my dad started playing the only video game I've ever seen him play (Solitaire doesn't count). Angry Birds! Sure it's a very casual game but it's something, and for the I am proud to say that MY father is a gamer:)
Not really :P
He's pretty good at Angry Birds though so...it's a start.
I'll end my super blog super update with a non-video game related event. Last month, I started a V8 initiative, where I would start regularly chugging down that vile red fluid. It may not taste good but it is most definitely good FOR you. After about two weeks your taste buds get accustomed to the torture so it's actually not that bad. Have you ever seen the nutrition facts for V8 vegetable juice? Guys...it has 120% of your daily dose of vitamin C in ONE serving (see here). The only bad thing about it is that it's really salty, and it's not good to eat a lot of salt...I think there's a low-sodium variation...
Anywhoooo...drink V8 if you can :)
Side note:
I love tomatoes, but I hate tomato juice...I'm not sure why.
Without further ado, Itreat you tonot one, but TWO original video game soundtracks *holds for applause*
OST of the Week:
Saria's Song/Lost Woods Theme- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
I've heard this tune in other Zelda games, but I never knew it had something to do with the story until I played Ocarina of Time.
Nate's Theme/Title Theme - Uncharted Drake's Fortune
As far as I can tell, Uncharted had no music. At least none during the platforming/puzzle solving segments, otherwise I was too busy not-dying to notice. This is the only OST I can remember from Uncharted, it's nice though.
I'm nowgoing to post my currently expanding gamer's to-do list of current games:
-Complete TheLegend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D Master Quest 100%
-Complete The Legend of Zelda Second Quest 100%
-Complete The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess 100%
-Complete Cave Story
-Platinum Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
-Complete Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
-Platinum Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
WOW, I did not think I was going to write this much...
I hope I didn't wear you out with this blog (you probably just skimmed through it, right? :P)
Here's a little commenter's guide that should be made mandatory for all blogs this long.

Game Title:
Battle of the Decades
Minoru, or Sayuri the female main character, is the youngest child in a family of thirteen, not including his/her father who had long passed away. Uncle worked as a royal Librarian in the castle's Facts & Records Hall, while Mother and the oldest son spent their time back at the village tending to the periodically unsuccessful crops. They were dirt poor. Aunt helped with the cooking, and Grandpa would occasionally come home with life-saving doses of gold, but he would mostly come back to take some instead. He likes to gamble. Minoru/Sayuri also has four other older siblings (a pair of which were twins) and three older cousins.
Minoru/Sayuri will turn eighteen in one week. In the Kingdom of Naru, the 18th birthday is traditionally one of the most anticipated and a greatly celebrated event in any Naru inhabitant's life. Days before his/her birthday, Mother told Minoru/Sayuri that there aren't even enough funds to make the traditional Oishii Kohitsuji dinner, which is a basic part of the extensive celebration. Minoru/Sayuri was depressed. The night before the hopeless birthday, Haru, the youngest (19) cousin persuades Minoru/Sayuri to a plan. The plan involves sneaking out, running away, and travelling across the land to the Battle of the Decade. The reward for this long and hard tournament is the fabled Golden Dragon Scale, an item that will grant up to 4 wishes before turning into dust.

LOOOOOOOONG flight....
slept through most of it :D
I'm here, made it to the US....did you know my flight was on 9/11? :?
Tired, sleepy (yes, still), hungry (I ate),....
Going to be busy for a while...
Here's this...
OST of the Week:
Music Box (Opening Theme)- Yoshi's Island DS
I love this one :)
Next blog will be better.
Next blog won't be for a while.
Picture to remember me by:
Good bye for now.
Today I finished writing (or typing) my packing list, because I'll soon be heading to the US. It's going to be a 15 hour flight...not including weighing-in the baggage, security checks, and waiting for the airplane to take off. One of the bigger decisions I had to make on the list is which console to take...PS3 or Wii. Unfortunately, I can't take both. I've decided it would make more sense to take the PS3, since (Monster hunter aside) I've completed every game on the Wii. That was before I beat LittleBigPlanet the other day. Now all PS3 games I have are complete as well.
I'm still planning on taking the PS3 though, since I'm still new to it, and I'll be buying more games for it than for the Wii this time around. In fact, the only Wii game I might get is Sonic Colors (I probably won't be staying until theKirby Wii and Skyward Sword release). If I do buy that, I'll have to ait a little bit before I get the chance to play it.
I'll miss Super Smash Bros Brawl :(
Have you createda bracket for the All-Time Greatest Game Sidekick competetion (here)? As you can see, I got myself a new profile banner. DON'T vote for R.O.B. though...unless you want to. I mean, I don't wantR.O.B.to win, the banner was just a test (appearantly you can't remove banners once you upload them, just replace...). Anyway, I've been creating "Image Kits" forsome randomAll-Time Greatest Sidekicks. Here are the ones that I've created and submitted:
Luke Triton
Frog (aka Glenn)
What do you think of them?
I'm not sure if I mentioned this before in a previous blog, but one of my current goals on GameSpot is to be able to make decent banners, sigs, avatars and whatnot. It's partly why I joined the Gamespace Banner Union. Another goal was to write regular reviews (is there a union for that?).
Here's progress on thesecond goal:)
...how about a picture for a colorful blog?
OST of the Week:
Old Snake - Metal Gear Solid 4
I can play the intro of this tune on the guitar :)
