Video Blog 2: Top 5 Power-Ups/Items...#1

My top 5 favorite power-ups and items in video games.

#1

Flight Mario
(Super Mario)

The final point on this list comes down to 1 power-up,
that breaks down to several different items.
When I say "Flight Mario," I mean Cape, Wing, and Raccoon/Tanooki Mario.
Which are all 3 power-ups with the same ability--Flight

Here's a video demonstrating
the awesomeness of Cape Luigi:

http://www.gamespot.com/users/Super-Poke-Bros/video_player?id=dSdnkGD75bMPujPZ
Edit: I fixed the video having no sound.
(Does anyone know if I can embed the video?)

Also some pictures:

I guess it's not right to include all 3 power-ups in 1.
So if someone asked me to pick just ONE...

Cape:
-Looks cool +1 Point
-Can fly as long as there is sky +3 Points
-Can be used to attack +1 Point
-Can be used to hover/fall down slowly +1 Point
-Can be used while carrying an item/riding Yoshi +1 Point

Wing:
-Looks cool +1 Point
-Can fly for a limited time +1 Point
-Can fly in 3D +1 Point

Raccoon/Tanooki:
-Looks awesome +2 Points
-Can be used to hover/fall down slowly +1 Point
-Can fly for a while, but needs to relaunch after a while +1 Point
-Can be used while carrying an item + 1 Point
-Can be used to attack +1 Point

There's also the actual Flying Mario which is in Super Mario Galaxy.
I won't include it because you can't use it in any level (except the level you play to obtain it)
and it's basically just like Wing Mario

Results:
Cape-7 Points
Wing-3 Points
Raccoon/Tanooki-6 Points

Cape Mario/Cape Luigi and the Mario Feather are the best Power-Up/Item!!

Blue Koopa Shell

While the regular Koopa Shell is a pretty great item,
nothing beats the BLUE Koppa Shell (except for item #1 on this list).

The blue shell has several appearances,
some in different forms...

In the Mario Kart series, it is a destructive blue shell
also known as the"Spiny Shell,"
which flies off and explodes on the person in 1st place.

______

In Mario Strikers Charged there is an item called a Freeze Shell.
It's technacly not part of the other blue shells,
but it IS a Koopa SHELL that has a BLUE(ish) color.
It can freeze your enemy solid when it hits him/her.

______

In New. Super Mario Bros.(DS) the blue shellis actually a power-up
which can be used to protect Mario/Luigi when they hide in it,
or they can use it to slide across the level and knock off all enemies in the way
(as if they where a koopa shell themselves)

______

The blue shell is also found in Mario & Luigi RPG 3 (Bowser's Inside Story)
It combines with Mario & Luigi's hammers.
Luigi hammers Mario and then Mario flies off a little
and comes back to Luigi like a boomerang.
It's used to hit blocks/switches that are on far off ledges.

Super Mario Blue Shell
"Mario & Luigi standing next to a blue shell block"

Super Mario Blue Shell 2
"Mario wearing the blue shell"

Super Mario Blue Shell 3
"Mario flung off the ledge"
______

My favorite appearance of the blue shell is in Super Mario World,
where you can have Yoshi hold it in his mouth and he will grow wings!

Super Mario Blue Shell 4
"Luigi standing next to a blue shell in Super Mario World"

Super Mario Blue Shell 5
"Luigi riding a Yoshi with a blue shell in his mouth"
In case you were wondering Blue Yoshi is also my favorite Yoshi.
Because he can fly with ANY shell. Just wanted to point that out.

The blue shell is epic, but like I said before, it's not as epic as item #1 on this list...

Today I found my Super Mario Advance 2 A.K.A. Super Mario World GBA game.
It still works!
And my save file didn't even get erased
(unlike some of my other gameboy games).
Thatis good news because I had beatan the game 100%,
with a maxed out life counter too (x999),
and I don't want all my hard work to go away.

Maxwell's Notebook
(Scribblenauts)

Maxwell's Notebook 7
(This is the highest resulotion I could find)

This is the main item in the game. It's what use use to create everything else. You just write in any word in the notebook and POOF! there it is. In Super Scribblenauts you can spawn the actual notebook and have Maxwell (your main character) "use" it.

NEW? (rant)

Did anyone else notice that, although it has been there for a LONG time now, the "My Achievements" section of the profile still says "NEW!"

That sign is very frustrating. It is NOT new anymore!!

...

I decided to postpone my Top10 Wii Games list.
There are so many new games coming out very soon for the Wii and I realized that I don't have enough GREAT Wii games that will ever make it to my list.

Metal Slimes

After playing Dragon Quest V so much, I realized that a lot of new quest are now avaliable on Dragon Quest IX. I also realized how much I missed the nicer graphics and battles. So I guess I'll just stick with DQIX until Pokemon Black and White comes out. The real reason I backed out from buying another RPG game now is it will mess up my whole when-to-buy-wish-list.

I also encountered my wierdest DQ battle today. It went something like this:

-Metal Slimes draw near.
-Joseph flees...
-...but the enemy block the way!
-Metal Slime A flees.
-Metal Slime B flees.
-Metal Slime C flees.
-The Metal Slimes fled.

???

If youever played a Dragon Quest game, you would know that metal slimes are tough-to-killand quick-to-flee monsters, but they are popular to hunt since they give crazy amounts of EXP.
They come in lots of variaties (metal medley, metal king slime, liquid metal slime)
The rarest of the rare is the legendary Platinum King Jewel (it exists I've seen it!)

I think Metal Slime is one of the level names for Game Spot :D

Here are some pictures:

The Tagging Game

I've been tagged into this little game where you have to post five random things about yourself and then tag five other people to do the same thing.

  1. Even though I first created my GameSpot account in 2008, I didn't really start using it until just earlier this year.
  2. The first video game I EVER played/owned was Super Mario World. It still is one of my top 10 favorite games!
  3. One of the most annoying things for me, in video games, is when you need to give a character an item or do a spicific task for them, but you just know they are traitor. You can't avoid it though because the game will never progress...
  4. I used to HATE Pokemon, before my friend told me to actually TRY it.
  5. It took me over30 minutesof pondering whileplaying several Super Mario Galax2 levels to think of "five random things"

And now to pick five more people...
Looking at my friend list...(eenie meenie...)

I wish there was another Dragon Quest I could get...

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride Review

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride Boxshot

Info

Dragon Quest is said to be the "bread and butter" of RPG games, and Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride is one of thethose that gave it its reputation. It's a remake of the original Dragon Quest V for the SNES which never made it to Western audiences. It features some new plot twists, updated graphics (compared to the original), and new items such as knick-knacks to collect and trade with other Dragon Quest V players.

Gameplay

Dragon Quest V has a large medieval open-world, with lots of kingdoms and towns dotted around. There are also about 200 different monsters to fight, and around 50 to try and recruit. That way there's always a new place to explore, new enemies to destroy, and new friends to make. In addition to the monsters, the game has a lot of human characters that can be recruited and join your party. The game's turn-based gameplay depends on the HP (hit points) and MP (magic points) of each fighter. While some characters' main focus is to attack and survive, others may rely more on their MP to heal other party members and cast supportive and/or battle spells. One of the few cons about this game is the cluttered items menu. After collecting a lot of items, the party bag and individual characters' bags get cluttered with scattered items and equipment, this also makes finding and equipping the best armor for each party member difficult, since you can't see any equipment that might have ended up in the wrong character's bag.

Story

Most RPG games need a good story. Dragon Quest does not have a good story, but a great one! The story has a very interesting and absorbing plot. You start your adventure as young boy who's traveling with his much more experienced dad to try and search for something. The story is long, yet engaging, and as the story grows with shocking events so does your character with age. At one point in the story, you even get to get married to one of three possible wives (hence the name of the game). The story is slightly different for each bride, giving you a reason to play the game once again.

Graphics/Music

Hand of the Heavenly Bride has significantly improved graphics compared to the original Dragon Quest V. When walking around inside towns and dungeons the camera can be turned 360° to reveal the 3D graphics of the place. The battle animations are not very good, but it makes up for it for it with nice character and monster art. The music is great, original, fitting, but it falls a little in the quality of sound effects.

Play Time

It's important for a game (or most games) to have a good amount of fulfilled play (not repetitive play). Dragon Quest V has relatively little to no bonus features, but it will still fulfill enough play time to make it worthwhile. And, like I said before, the game has some replayability with three slightly different alternate stories.

Overall (out of 10)Gameplay- 8.5
Story- 10
Graphics- 8
Music- 9.4
Play Time-8
Overall-8.7

Final recommendations:

Dragon Quest fans will love this game. However, if you're not already a fan of turn-based RPG games, Dragon Quest V might not be the best start, as there are better Dragon Quest titles.
Final Statement: It's a solid game
