what you guys think of COD4? Doesnt it seem a bit biased to you?PrimordialMeme
Kinda like this thread.
I couldnt care less, im not gonna notice a few pixels. I didnt with Halo 3 and COD4, so why will i with MGS4? Of course this will be bashed around for like a week just like how Halo was bashed for the same reason, but in reality it doesnt make a difference.GazzaB
Bungies reasoning for doing it was a stupid one: They needed enough room to store 2 frames on the eDRAM die and enough graphics horsepower due to their HDR lighting solution which is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. All that graphical power wasted over something like HDR which is way overvalued. At least CoD4 was trying to keep a high framerate with anti aliasing, which makes much more sense and still rendered at a higher resolution than Halo 3. Frankly all these companies need a slap in the face for what they are doing. Uncharted is arguably the best looking game this whole console generation, and it NATIVELY renders in 720p. Why anyone else really just fails to do so is beyond me.
Even if it is so what! There have been some AMAZING looking games that have come out recently that aren't "true 720p" aka, Halo 3 and CoD 4 are both sub 720p and Imo are both two of the best looking games this generation! This also puts to rest the illusion that 1080p is the "end all, be all" in HD gaming! I persoanlly bought a 720p LCD instead of 1080p because I knew that for the forseeable future, games simply will not feature "true 1080p" visuals, so why spend the extra $1000 for a HDTV that does so?kungfuchaos
Trust me you can notice the difference between true 1280 x 720 z-buffering and 1280 x 600 used in CoD4. This was one of the best reasons for me to get it on PC (where I can run it at 1440 x 900 natively on my PC monitor) instead of on my PS3 or 360, not to mention all the other perks that come with the PC experience.
Right now it hasn't been confirmed, but many of the guys at Beyond3d.com are insanely brilliant at what they do. I really like posting on the forum there, as they have alot of real game developers who are regular participating members. Earlier today there was a Gametrailers.com thread quoting the beyond3d.com MGS4 576p possibility. If this is true, it's going to blow up in Konami's face considering the massive amount attention garnered by Halo 3 rendering at 564p.
Now for all you idiots out there let me make clear what this really means for game that are "below 720p" such as MGS4 possibly:
1080p, 1080i, 720p, 720i, 480p are all output resolutions sent directly from your game console to your HD television. Keep in mind this is what's sent by the console to the TV. In the actual game rendering environment though, this isn't always the case. One of the last rendering processes is z-buffering, in which points in the 3 dimensional virtual scene are translated into a 2D plane so it can be thrown up onto a viewing screen of some sort. The actual z-buffering phase can be rendering below 720p (which is the minimum output res desired by MS and Sony), then upscaled to 720p or higher. Reasons for this is to save on graphics processing power in order to gain higher framerates or give more headroom and processing power for other effects. Call of Duty 4 rendered at 1280 x 600 if I remember right in order to maintain 60 frames per second while still being able to use 2x anti aliasing. This most likely would be the reason for MGS4 to be having such a low rendering resolution if it really is below 1280 x 720. I have strong faith that the game will be natively rendering in 1280 x 720, but considering Konami did want 60 Hz framerate, it's a possibility that we might have to contend with.
All I know is this is going to blow up big, and I'm still surprised at the possibility even in the light of games like Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank Future which natively z-buffer at 1280 x 720 but are amazing beautiful and arguably more detailed than MGS4. Maybe Konami isn't as up to date with the PS3's hardware as others? CoD4 sends out upscaled 720p and 1080p signals not native, and that's what MGS4 would be doing.
