That's pretty cool. Involving Sci-fi with real life knowledge is always both entertaining and enlightening at the same time.

Science and fiction have a very close relationship with each other, many of today's inventions and technological advancements are a direct result of inspiration from fictional works like movies and books, and now, it seems video-games are sharing that pool.

I mean, c'mon, who in his life didn't think of building a time machine?

Deleting data virtually is recoverable since it's software, even if you rewrote the disk and wiped it again a dozen times over.

If you do hardware damage though, as in physically destroying the harddrive, either by making holes in it, crushing it completely, use electro-magnetic pulses or burning it to ashes, then there is no way to reconstruct the data.

Remember, at the end it's all 0's and 1's. You can't recover that from a messy pile of broken pieces or ashes.

@Sohereiam @bongsyas_23 That wouldn't have solved anything. He had multiple PCs, wiping them clean or burning them all at once would only delay it, no one gets all his HDDs rendered useless the same day the FBI comes to visit, he would've been charged anyway.
