The problem I have with singleplayer (unless the game has a really good story) is knowing that I'm playing against computer opponents. Sadly, good singleplayer shooters are almost impossible to accomplish nowadays. Everything's already been done. There is no room for innovation short of changing the genre of the game (see Bioshock, FPSRPG style). Don't expect any pure FPS games in the near future to have very original singleplayers. Don't buy an FPS game looking for an engagin singleplayer.

Either he sucks at multiplayer or he just doesn't like it, either way, I think there are enough good singleplayer games out there to justify a few really good multiplayer games. If you actually look at how many multiplayer based games are coming out, it isn't too many. There are tons of games coming out with GREAT singleplayer and also some with GREAT multiplayer. If you don't like one or the other just don't buy it. Don't criticize a game just because it's not catered to you.

I thoroughly enjoy playing COD4 online and I haven't even attempted to complete the singleplayer. I've also put many more hours into multiplayer games (CS, WoW, COD, HL2DM, UT, etc.) than I ever have into any combination of singleplayer games. I'm the type of person that's unable to replay a singleplayer game, mainly because it's too predictable. Multiplayer is the only thing that makes me come back for more. Because my taste differs than yours, should I go criticize every game that only has a 20 hour singleplayer (given that I'm getting 50+ hours out of my multiplayer games)? Obviously no, so stop complaining about games which are clearly geared at doing one thing great and actually manage to do it great.
