I hope to join after highschool, you guys have my respect. any tips for me are appreciated( i want to join army then army rangers)Stanley09Basic tips: Stay out of financial and legal trouble. That can ruin any chance you have of getting a security clearance should you need one. Also...train, train, train! You can't run enough. Miles a day if you can, especially if you want to go to Ranger school. You have to be in the best shape of your life and you still won't be ready. It's tough. Stick with it and don't let anyone talk you out of it. All the props in the world if you join. I'd be proud of you, man.

[QUOTE="Vundi"] And what military actions instigated 9/11 or Pearl Harbor? I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one. As much as I disagree with your opinion, I'd give my life in the service of this country to protect your right to express it.VandalvideoWell, the military did supply arms to the Taliban during the Russo-Afghan war earlier, and they were involved in the forcing of Palestinians out of their land through coercive force. As for Pearl Harbor, it was military inaction that caused those events. Thank you!!! You did a fantastic job of illustrating my point. Damned if we do and damned if we don't. So we may as well be proactive.
Notes about what? :)*makes notes*

[QUOTE="Vundi"] Who do you think the intelligence agencies have carry out the missions to prevent all those attacks from happening. And local police doesn't handle everything. The National Guard and other reserve components of the military play a large roll in handling domestic security. VandalvideoI wouldn't know, because I'm not an intelligence officer, as I'm sure from your own admissions you're not either. What we do know is that intelligence agencies limit terrorists attacks. Military actions, if anything, have only instigated further terrorists threats. I don't see military as a viable counter to terrorism. And what military actions instigated 9/11 or Pearl Harbor? I dont get the point of this thread... usually there is a discussion aspect.... there is now way to verify service either so yeah... anyone can go around claiming to be Gen Petraeus if the wanted.weezyfb
Not that I need to verify but as you can see from my profile picture, these are all me at different stages of my military career.
Well said. Thank you for everything you've given. I'm glad things are working out for you. :)Im retired (USMC) after I got injured in Iraq in my second combat tour in 06. I was an 0311 that got tranferred to recon upon arrival of my new base at camp india and was in charge of around 400 IIF (Iraqi International Forces). I was one of the original 20 IIF and Shawani instructors before the push through Fallujah. Made the 2nd half of the push through Baghdad, two pushes though Fallujah, and did a few missions in outskirts like Tikrit and Habinayih. OORAH devils oorah. I'm at 80% disability after getting hit with a large unidentified explosive while in a sniper tower where I breathed in a nerve agent and fell over 40 ft. from the explosions aftershock. I'm doing better now though... Ive been married to my beautiful wife for about 5 years nowhave two kids, two cats, and a dog.... lol... keeps me busy, soI amkeeping my head up. One of my best buddies from my hometownre-enlisted and is currently in Afghanistan. Remember to keep the US military in your heart, and pray for their safety regardless of whether you are a religious person or not... hell, it cant hurt any...

[QUOTE="Vundi"] A power doesn't have to be strong to make an impact. I think the 9/11 attacks proved that. What if you had been closely related to one or more of the 3,000+ people who lost their lives in those attacks, to a "power" that no one thought was strong enought to take seriously, would you have a vested interest then? The fact remains that you never really know when something like that will happen. Not a single one of those people had any idea it was coming. Would you rather wait until someone you love dies or would you rather support the people keeping all that violence in another country?VandalvideoThankfully I live in an area of the country which would not be the target of an attack from a lower power. Also, last time I recalled the military aren't the ones preventing such terrorists attacks. Those are largely prevented by intelligence agencies and policemen. Who do you think the intelligence agencies have carry out the missions to prevent all those attacks from happening. And local police doesn't handle everything. The National Guard and other reserve components of the military play a large roll in handling domestic security.

There are a few here that served in the military. What years did you serve by the way?
My current contract doesn't expire until 2012. I imagine I'll re-enlist though. I was on federal deployment orders to Camp Bucca, Iraq from October 2007 to October of 2008.
Nice nice. Since the contract is until 2012, is there a chance of going to Afghanistan too?
Yup. There is talk of my unit being deployed there sometime next year but nothing is set in stone yet.[QUOTE="Vundi"] It's the "not having a vested interest" part that doesn't sit well with me. That ability to survive would be in serious question should the scenario you presented in an earlier post ever come to pass. Just seems like you're taking the many and varied roles of our military for granted.VandalvideoUnless there is a culture out there who takes to a scorched populous policy, and there currently isn't one who is anywhere near powerful enough to combat even the militias of the United States, then that point does not follow. I'm fine with even the most base means of subsistence as long as it is subsistence. If a power comes along strong enough to want to utterly obliterate every man, woman and child in the United States then I will have a vested interest in a military. Until then, I do not.
