@picho86 That is a shame that you can only have 4-6. I remember bringing way more (12-16?) on a Skyranger in the original. Still, I like having options with my squads. If you are only allowed 4, that almost forces your hand as far as bringing one of each class. Then if your heavy dies, you don't have another for that mission for example. Bah...they need to allow for more flexibility IMO. Maybe I am being a bit quick to judge without playing it, but I get the impression they want you to play a certain way (as far as mixed unit tactics).
@picho86 I knew there were no bus drivers, :P I was just mocking what potential professions the game might have if they had skins for each type of civilian that became an XCOM operative based on their real world job before the invasion. Heh. But that helps me understand it a bit better. Still seems like they don't allow you to stock up on certain classes then. What if I want 5 snipers 1 support, 1 heavy, and 1 assault? Or any other variation? It seems like if the promotions grant only the ones you are lacking, that you don't have as much control over your squad's make-up as I had hoped.
@picho86 So are you saying that they all start off generic (look the same), but if you rank them up, you can alter their appearance? That seems a bit odd. Also, you are implying that they have a predetermined profession before they become a soldier. Like school teacher, doctor, bus driver??? Or does the game refer to weapon specialty as their "profession"? If so, does that mean that you cannot pre-select which soldier classes/professions you want to hire/build? That would mean that you could potentially have a team of all Heavies even when you want a more diverse team. Maybe I am not understanding the system very well.
@stan_boyd Yeah, thank god for saves. I found myself saving before every turn and not saving again until the aliens missed more often then not, and my soldiers scored hits. It was brutal.
@stan_boyd In the original, you could crouch behind cover as well (2 time units). I always made it a point to reserve 2 time units so that my soldiers could crouch behind a hay bale, fence, or other obstruction. It works especially well when you crouch from an elevated position in a building at a window. So, I am not sure where the cover argument is coming from.
I hope that in this new installment, you are able to bring more than 1 type of each soldier class. My impressions so far are that you can only have 1 of each type. In addition to being able to bring more than 1 type of each class, I hope they don't all have the same exact face/sex/race/build but I think they are going to be somewhat generic. We shall see, but I still am yet to try the demo.
@virus10101 Did you ever consider that maybe the reason that you are being told what to do is because it is a DEMO, and the first mission is somewhat of a tutorial? That is pretty standard for most games nowadays.
I love the original XCOM. I will never forget all of the frustration that the game brought, but also the massive sense of accomplishment when the tide starts to turn in your favor once you research some alien tech. Even on beginner, the game can bring you to it's knees. Rookies get blasted before they even catch a glimpse of an enemy, and you are often left wondering, "Should I just leave everyone on the frickin Skyranger and wait for them to come to me or what!!" Truly an epic game. The game's graphics haven't aged well (as expected), but the difficulty is still there. I am looking forward to the next installment with high hopes.
@obsequies I highly doubt it. Without a controller or mouse, an FPS would be pretty awkward on a mobile device. Touching the screen where you want to shoot would be way too easy not to mention obstructing the target momentarily. I don't see why they would make an FPS for a mobile device when there is clearly a much stronger market for those kinds of games on other platforms.
@alenth I am not going to waste my time reading 1000+ comments about why the game does or does not merit a score like this. Nobody ever seems to be happy with scores on here anymore. People complain about 1/2 a point on here, so I can only imagine what people are saying about this score.
