Which OS are you using?

I agree. The only way I would disagree is if there were a particular processor or video card you are totally sold on. If that is the case, waiting for a couple more months might save you some scratch.tbh if you want a PC now whats the point to wait in waiting 5 months for Ivy? you could always make the excuse of waiting 5 months, because tbh every 5-6 months a huge new tech will be out, that will never change, so waiting IMHO is pointless get the best of whats out now. and then upgrade later when you need to.

If you have older components in your system, I wouldn't count on driver support. Might as well stick with what you have already got.
Some old games are being remade, but not the way they were originally. Syndicate and X-Com just to name a couple. What games of old do you most desire to see remade with today's tech?
My votes go to the Wing Commander series and X-Wing/Tie Fighter.
Specs always help, but you might want to start by flashing your bios to the most recent version and updating all of your drivers. After that, I would check ram for errors.
Usually BSODs on new builds are driver issues, but it could also be a hardware compatibility issue with your motherboard.
Keep in mind that your windows key is tied to the old motherboard. If you change that out, you are going to need another windows activation key.
Why you trying to prolong the life of this computer? Get a new one already.

I agree. Keeping this one alive is like putting someone on life support that is never gonna make it anyway. You might as well buy a new computer. Just because the ram fits, doesn't mean it is compatible with your board. Sometimes ram is faulty as well. Return the ram and put that money toward a new comp.

You can probably scrape an i5 2500k, 4GB of ram and a 6870/560 in that budget.

no way thats going to happen with an OS and a monitor which will take about $270 of his budget leaving him with less than $500 for a build. $230 for a core i5 2500k, $140 for 6870 (if he's lucky), $30 for 4 gigs ram, $70 for HDD, $50 for case, $50 for a cheap h61 mobo, $50 for a psu, the budget is already $100 over . Im not even considering applicable taxes and shipping....
Ditto. That is why he would be better off buying a decent prebuilt computer and then just updrading the video card and/or processor at a later date. Lots of gaming computers that are advertised for $500-1000 dollars online are just the tower. Kinda hard to build a max settings rig on a $750 budget. Especially if you have no monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers.
I have an ASUS right now, but I have also been a fan of Biostar in the past.
You don't have to wipe unless you still see that the toilet paper is dirty. But yes, you may as well save your documents and pictures to a flash drive and start er over. If you were switching from Win 7 x 32 Home Premium to Win 7 x 32 Pro or Ult, you could just do an upgrade install, but like others have already said, you cannot upgrade 32 to 64 bit without a partition or a clean install.
