Playstation,Saturn and N64 era RPGs

Final Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy VII needs little introduction. In the opinion of many the best game of all time,or the most revolutionary RPG,FFVII is the ultimate adventure taking you from the dark city of Midgar,to the countryside, tropical resorts, desert and centre of the Earth. The story has a very famous plot twist with Shinra and Sephiroth, and a love triangle.

Final Fantasy VIII

Final Fantasy VIII is very elegant, and keeps the modern world setting without jumping back to medieval.A touching love story, plot twists, fierce rivalry, and a combat system that is very unique using junctioning and Guardian Forces(summoning creatures)FFVIII has beautiful, elegant cinematics and music.

Final Fantasy IX

Final Fantasy IX is described by many as an old school Final Fantasy game but is always amongst people's favorite FF games. You take the role of a thief who's involved in a plan to kidnap the princess, but the story becomes much more than that, and the game has an almost Shakesperian feel, with romance and frequent plot switching between characters.

Breath of Fire III and IV

Breath of Fire III and IV are old school RPGs.The characters have the anime s t y l e appearance, and you are given anime s t y l e presentations.Breath of Fire III is old school, turn based RPG to the fullest, travelling from town to town and through the forest.Breath of Fire IV lets you take on 2 stories that link together.

Parasite Eve 1 and 2

Never released for PAL so it was another game I missed out on.Parasite Eve combines elements of horror(similiar to Resident Evil games) with RPG elements(similiar to Final Fantasy) and PE 1 and 2 are loved by many.

Star Ocean 2

Many people say the original Star Ocean didn't recieve the praise it deserved because it was released so late in the SNES's lifespan.Enix's Star Ocean 2 is loved by many RPG fans,it combines a story described as one that pulls you in and combines sci fi with fantasy, colorful,a n i m e s t y l e graphics that also have lots of detail, and a combat system that uses stategy and action.

Chrono Cross

Image 23

One of the few games to score a perfect 10 by gamespot.Another brilliant RPG given to us by Square.A story that involves travelling to different dimensions where you learn of your own death,as well as over 40 playable characters and colorful, anime s t y l e graphics, with turn based combat that requires more strategy and no random battles.Never released for PAL PS consoles!!!!!!!

Azure Dreams

An RPG by Konami, you find and hatch eggs that contain monsters and use them to try to progress through a tower to prove you're the greatest monster tamer in the land. The graphics are mixed old school and cartoony and it's very quaint.

Vagrant Story

Mixes the stealth elements of Metal Gear Solid with RPG,and comic book s t y l e presentation.A story that many people love and it uses a combat system where you chain combo hits together.Gamespot gave Vagrant Story a higher score than Final Fantasy VII.

Xenogears

Another Square Masterpiece, and heavily influenced by anime and story telling.Xenogears has a unique battle system and is rated by many as one of the best RPGs on the PS.

Shining Force 3

The Sega Saturn didn't have much success and many of it's great games went unnoticed by many.Shining Force 3(as well as Shining Force 3 Scenario 2 and 3)is rated by people as just as good(if not better)than many of the popular RPGs on it's 32-Bit rival, the Playstation.SF3 has beautiful anime s t y l e graphics.

Suikoden 1 and 2

I love Suikoden III and V on the PS2,although I haven't played the first 2 Suikoden games on the Playstation. However I love Suikoden III and V so much I have to put Suikoden 1 and 2 on here, and also because many people love the Suikoden games on the Playstation.Suikoden is famous for the 108 star of destiny, which are 108 playable characters!

Grandia

Available on both Playstation and Saturn(and the Saturn version is better),some people claim this is a more satisfying RPG to play than FFVII.With a deep story, very colorful, anime inspired graphics, and a battle system that makes the characters all have unique abilities and a world that you'll want to explore since all the towns have unique architecture.

Threads of Fate

2 different stories with 2 different characters who have different combat s t y l e in this action RPG.Very colorful graphics and liked by many JRPG fans.

Panzer Dragoon Saga

Image 5

An RPG made of the much loved shooter.PDS takes you into the world in RPG form,a world with dragons and many villages and graphics with a more serious, intense nature.

Guardian Crusade

A simple story,in a graphically simple,but colorful world.In the story you're just a Knight trying to return a baby monster to it's home and it's played in turn based RPG s t y l e.

Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean

Another 16-Bit s t y l e JRPG that was released for 32-Bit with handdrawn s t y l e animation and deep story telling.

Shining the Holy Ark

An addition to the 'Shining' series for the Saturn, with 3D anime inspired graphics, and heavy into story telling.Loved by man RPG fans.

Persona 2:Innocent Sin

A darker setting compared to many JRPGs,the characters are highschool students and must stop the 'Joker'from opening a doorway to heaven by capturing people's dreams.

Paper Mario

Using graphics that resemble paper cutouts, the graphics are very colorful and have the Nintendo feel, and the game uses side scrolling action for traditional Mario game fans, with a turn based battle system and RPG s t y l e story telling and character interaction.

RPGs of each era

I thought I would show the great RPGs of each era.

I will first start with SNES and Sega Genesis.

Final Fantasy IV(FFII in the U.S)

Arguably,it was the most important entry into the FF franchise.A great story with heart warming moments, sadness and incredible plot twists.FFIV gained the FF series alot of recognition.

Final Fantasy VI(III in U.S)

War devestated the world one thousand years earlier, and the world is trying to rebuild. Some people have said FFVI has their favorite story, and to be honest I haven't played much of it(I've given much of my attention to FF IV,VII,VIII,X)but the story must be great if people have said so.

Tales of Phantasia

A c l a s s i c from Namco. The game is so good,it's been re-released for Game Boy Advance because many people love it.The battle system in TOP is just like the other 'Tales' series games and isn't turn based and battles are fought on a side on screen and in real time, while still using strategy and levelling up elements.

Terranigma

Recieves many high scores from reviewers. The story is about Light and Dark battling for billions of years, and a boy from a village in the underoworld accidently unleashes a curse on his own people and he must travel to the dangers of the above world to fix it.

Seiken Densetsu 3

There is 3 different sub stories within the game so you can't see everything in the first play through. The battles are done in real time and there is no random battles. Not released outside of Japan.

Lufia II:Rise of the Sinistrals

Developed by Taito(developers of Space Invaders),Neverland,Natsume(developers of Harvest Moon)and Nintendo,Lufia II is described as one of the best RPGs for the SNES,and as having one of the saddest stories ever.Another rare JRPG that many people haven't played.

Chrono Cross

Another Square masterpiece.A story that involves time travel and correcting timelines. It doesn't have random monster battles and took RPGs to another level in terms of story creativity, graphics and RPG gameplay.

Super Mario RPG

Square and Nintendo pulled off this masterpiece very late in the SNES lifespan.I can't believe this game wasn't released for PAL so I never saw it in any Australian stores. The game has great presentation, and beautiful, colorful graphics for 16-Bit.The gameplay and music are great too.

Star Ocean

Never released outside of Japan, some ROM makers had to unofficially translate the game into English. This is an example of why people resort to piracy and using ROMS,because they simply cannot buy the game even if they wanted to.The game is very popular with c l a s s i c RPG fans.

Phantasy Star II,III,IV

The Genesis didn't have many RPGs,but the Phantasy Star series provided RPG fans who didn't own a SNES,many hours of great RPG gameplay on their Genesis. All the Phantasy Star games for the Genesis receive good/great reviews most of the time.

Shining Force 1 and 2

Another series of RPGs for the Genesis. The series is loved by many fans of RPGs and so are the later Shining Force games on later consoles.

Astronomy

Neubla

Interstellar cloud of dust, hydrogen, gas and plasma. The creation or remains of a star. The formations of gas, dust and other materials 'clump' together to form larger masses, which attract further matter, and eventually will become big enough to form stars. The remaining materials are then believed to form planets, and other planetary system objects.

Once a star comes to the end of it's life cycle and collapses in on itself or novas(explodes)the remains form a new star, new solar system, perhaps new life.

Actual image

Star

A star is a massive, luminous ball of plasma which creates a fusion reaction(equivelent to hundreds of millions of nuclear weapons exploding at once in the one place then contained by the stars gravity). The sun that Earth revolves around is a star.

Actual image

Black hole

A region of space in which the gravitational field is so powerful that nothing, not even electromagnetic radiation (e.g. visible light), can escape its pull after having fallen past its event horizon. The term derives from the fact that the absorbsion of visible light renders the hole's interior invisible. As you get closer to a black hole time slows,so if you were to return to Earth after being near a black hole you would be in the future.

Image-Well we can't actuallly see a black hole, just the objects around it being sucked in.

Wormhole

In physics, a wormhole is a hypothetical topological feature of spacetime that is basically a shortcut(portal) through space and time. Spacetime can be viewed as a 2D surface, and when 'folded' over, a wormhole bridge can be formed eg if spacetime was a piece of paper and you wanted to get to the other side quicker you could fold the spacetime.

Image in theory

Galaxy

A group of stars massed together. The Milky Way galaxy we are in has hundreds of billions of stars.A galaxy is held together by the gravity of a black hole. There is hundreds of billions of galaxies in the universe with hundreds of billions of stars like our Milky Way galaxy so imagine the possibility for life elsewhere in the universe.

The Drake Equation

The Drake Equation was developed by Frank Drake in 1961 as a way to focus on the factors which determine how many intelligent, communicating civilizations there are in our galaxy. The Drake Equation is:

N = N* fp ne fl fi fc fL
The equation can really be looked at as a number of questions:

N* represents the number of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy
Question: How many stars are in the Milky Way Galaxy?
Answer: Current estimates are 100 billion.

fp is the fraction of stars that have planets around them
Question: What percentage of stars have planetary systems?
Answer: Current estimates range from 20% to 50%.

ne is the number of planets per star that are capable of sustaining life
Question: For each star that does have a planetary system, how many planets are capable of sustaining life?
Answer: Current estimates range from 1 to 5.

fl is the fraction of planets in ne where life evolves
Question: On what percentage of the planets that are capable of sustaining life does life actually evolve?
Answer: Current estimates range from 100% (where life can evolve it will) down to close to 0%.

fi is the fraction of fl where intelligent life evolves
Question: On the planets where life does evolve, what percentage evolves intelligent life?
Answer: Estimates range from 100% (intelligence is such a survival advantage that it will certainly evolve) down to near 0%.

fc is the fraction of fi that communicate
Question: What percentage of intelligent races have the means and the desire to communicate?
Answer: 10% to 20%

fL is fraction of the planet's life during which the communicating civilizations live
Question: For each civilization that does communicate, for what fraction of the planet's life does the civilization survive?
Answer: This is the toughest of the questions. If we take Earth as an example, the expected lifetime of our Sun and the Earth is roughly 10 billion years. So far we've been communicating with radio waves for less than 100 years. How long will our civilization survive? Will we destroy ourselves in a few years like some predict or will we overcome our problems and survive for millennia? If we were destroyed tomorrow the answer to this question would be 1/100,000,000th. If we survive for 10,000 years the answer will be 1/1,000,000th.

When all of these variables are multiplied together when come up with:
N, the number of communicating civilizations in the galaxy.

Now take into consideration there is hundreds of billions of galaxies in this universe, and infinite parallel universes.

An anime alien lol

Some Asian songs I like

A love before time(soundtrack from Crouching Tiger,Hidden

Dragon)It sounds better in Mandarin but here is the english

version.

How to see you again(mixture of rap, punk, pop song by Japanese

band M.O.V.E)

Rhythm of Emotion(opening song to Gundam Wing anime series)

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JpDr3HorNYs

M.O.V.E song Dogfight used for Initial D

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1hBThwQffJE

All the way North(Jay Chou song for Initial D)

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Eu73kRCib9w

There is some annoying problem that when I try to add the Dogfight song it changes the link to rhythm of emotion but I wil try to fix it later.

One of the most moving movies I have seen

I don't know what the movie is called and it wouldn't put the movie name on the listings, anyways it's a Korean movie about a man(his name wasn't revealed) who can make himself invisible to others(he really isn't invisible but somehow he can instantly appear out of the line of sight of any person)anyways he was in prison for a lengthy prison sentence and a prison guard beat him up.The man discovered he had somehow learned the ability to make himself 'invisible' and beat up the prison guard (because he was invisible the prison guard couldn't fight back)and the man escaped from prison.

He then went to be with the woman he loved, and because he was an escaped prisoner the police were always coming to their house,as well as her family members and friends and the man would just make himself invisible everytime they came over. But it was tough for them, because even though they loved eachother they couldn't share the fact they were together with anyone else.

When guys would try to flirt with the woman he loved or harassed her,he sometimes beat them up but often it was better for him to just ignore it or not follow her around. Her family and friends wanted to see her get married or just be with someone and they didn't know she already had someone but she just couldn't tell them.

One morning her brother came over early as she and the man character were eating breakfast, and her brother saw 2 plates with food but it looked like she was home alone because the man character had just made himself invisible again, and her brother was suspicious and he and her family and friends always thought she was acting weird, but she didn't want to give up the man she loved, and throughout the movie you saw him and her really loved eachother, and I just loved the movie,it was very moving, and while the story wasn't too complex it was still very deep.

I've always prefered Asian movies over Western for many reasons, but this movie shows the originality and deepness and level of emotion they can deliver.

This afternoon was 3D fighter time!

I felt like playing Dead or Alive Ultimate(has DOA 1 and 2)and DOA 3,I didn't bother with DOA 4 cuz I don't like it that much.Since I was in a 3D fighter mood,I also played Tekken 3 and 5 and Virtua Fighter 2 and 5.

Dead or Alive Ultimate was a great package to be released on Xbox,DOA 2 is my favorite DOA game and I loved knocking enemies into giant elephants in Africa and I feel the fighting is more technical and less button mashey than DOA 3 and 4.And it was a smash hit when it was first released allowing you to knock enemies through walls, down sets of stairs etc and the environments look beautiful. The original DOA is a great inclusion in the package for those who didn't play the original.

DOA 3 is a great example of eye candy, there isn't much depth and you can easily defeat enemies with 1 move but there is gorgeous views of the beach(with white sand, beautiful aqua water, palm trees and holiday resort structures and you even see yachts and can move around with unrestrictive boundries even into the water! and you can fight inside a glamorous skyscraper building, and see Traditional Asian s t y l e buildings and fight on top of a mountain.

Image 165

And the beautiful women who hardly wear anything makes the game worth looking at ;)

Virtua Fighter 2 was my favorite 3D fighting game until Tekken 3 came along. It's technical in being very strict with defense, and timing your offense well.

Virtua Fighter 5 is the most technical fighting game I've played, everything you do is so vital, one bad move can see you be severly punished, you need to position yourself well and the scissors/paper/rock system is so well balanced out.You can just overwhelm your opponent with speed and even if your on the brink of losing and your opponent has full health a full on offensive barrage can turn the tables quickly. The special moves and combos require such delicate timing, and there is many of them to use and you have to learn when to use them.

Tekken 3 introduced some memorable characters such as Jin Kazama(the grandson of Heihachi who hosts some of the tournaments and has an army and wants to combine his DNA with some creature to rule the world) Hwoarang the Korean famous for his powerful kicking moves with his taekwondo s t y l e,the Jamaican guy Eddie who's fighting s t y l e looks like it is mixed with dancing to reggae music while at the beach surrounded by palm trees,Bryan the powerful cyborg, and the Panda and bear named Kuma.

The fighting in Tekken 3 has some diverse s t y l e and technical,brutal fighting.

Tekken 5 includes the more difficult arcade version of Tekken 3 but I prefer the PSone version.Tekken 5 was my favorite of all of them to play, the graphics and music are amazing, the graphics may not be as colorful as DOA games but has a more serious feel.Paul Phoenix looks so badass with his really high flattop and bikie outfit with flames and you can customize the characters outfits and hair s t y l e and you can even give the accessories like Paul a shotgun to carry and give a character sunglasses.

But most importantly the fighting is fast, technical as ever and brutal but very well balanced, not too easy or difficult, but the final boss is really tough. You see little details like glass breaking or rocks or objects break when characters hit them and like on DOA you can hit an opponent as they rebound off an object. And there is humor too,I love the scene after Paul beats the bear Kuma in a fight and Kuma asks Paul to save the other bears but Paul is too busy jumping around and celebrating and acting like an idiot and kuma says there is no way this idiot can save them...

And when the final boss takes a lot of time telling Paul about his plans Paul just gets bored and wants the final boss to hurry up and fight. And after you beat the final boss with Paul he knows he is the strongest fighter on Earth and wants to prove he is the best in the universe and yells at aliens to come fight him and you see countless flying saucers fly towards earth to fight Paul and Paul yells! Bring it on ya aliens!!!!!!!!

Beautiful and rare creatures

Blue Whale

The Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is a marine mammal belonging to the suborder of baleen whales (called Mysticeti). At up to 33 metres (110 ft) in length and 181 metric tonnes (200 short tons) or more in weight, it is believed to be the largest animal ever to have existed. The Blue whales tongue can weigh over 2.5 tonnes and it's heart is about the size of a small car.

Long and slender, the Blue Whale's body can be various shades of bluish-grey dorsally and somewhat lighter underneath. There are at least three distinct subspecies: B. m. musculus of the north Atlantic and north Pacific, B. m. intermedia, of the Southern Ocean and B. m. brevicauda (also known as the Pygmy Blue Whale) found in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean. B. m. indica, found in the Indian Ocean, may be another subspecies. As with other baleen whales, its diet consists mainly of small crustaceans known as krill, as well as small fish and sometimes squid.Blue whales require tonnes of food each day and will often feed on thick pockets of Krill that will consist of millions of Krill and it shows natures delicate balance.

Blue Whales were abundant in nearly all oceans until the beginning of the twentieth century. For over 40 years they were hunted almost to extinction by whalers until protected by the international community in 1966. A 2002 report estimated there were 5,000 to 12,000 Blue Whales worldwide located in at least five groups. Before whaling the largest population was in the Antarctic, numbering approximately 239,000 (range 202,000 to 311,000).There remain only much smaller (around 2,000) concentrations in each of the North-East Pacific, Antarctic, and Indian Ocean groups. There are two more groups in the North Atlantic and at least

I think it's sad they used to be abundant but are now so rare, the fact there is only a few thousand of them left in the world is terrifying and shows mans horrible impact on them.

Viperfish

A viperfish is a deepwater fish, they are found as deep as 2800 meters deep and uses a light organ attached to it's dorsal spine to attract fish and other prey.

Anglerfish

They live in the depths of the ocean, where it's too deep for sunlight to penetrate so they make their own light.Anglerfish have a fin in the shape of a fishing rod growing from its snout with a glowing light that acts as bait to prey to lure them inside the anglerfish's huge mouth.

Giant Squid

Giant Squid in myth

Giant Squid real video footage

Giant squid are squid of the Architeuthidae family, represented by as many as eight species of the genus Architeuthis. They are deep-ocean dwelling animals that can grow to a tremendous size: recent estimates put the maximum size at 13 metres (43 ft) for females and 10 metres (33 ft) for males from caudal fin to the tip of the two long tentacles (second only to the colossal squid at an estimated 14 metres (46 ft), one of the largest living organisms). The mantle is about 2 metres (7 ft) long (more for females, less for males), and the length of the squid excluding its tentacles is about 5 metres (16 ft). There have been claims reported of specimens of up to 20 metres (66 ft), but no animals of such size have been scientifically documented.

On September 30, 2004, researchers from the National Science Museum of Japan and the Ogasawara Whale Watching Association took the first images of a live giant squid in its natural habitat.Several of the 556 photographs were released a year later. The same team successfully filmed a live giant squid for the first time on December 4, 2006.

Vampire Squid

The Vampire Squid is an extreme example of a deep-sea cephalopod, thought to reside at aphotic (lightless) depths from 600-900 metres (2,000-3,000 feet) or more. Within this region of the world's oceans is a discrete habitat known as the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). Within the OMZ oxygen saturation is too low to support aerobic metabolism in most higher organisms. Nonetheless, the Vampire Squid is able to live and breathe normally in the OMZ at oxygen saturations as low as 3%; a feat no other cephalopod, and few other animals, can claim.

In order to cope with life in the suffocating depths, vampire squid have developed several radical adaptations. Of all deep-sea cephalopods, their mass-specific metabolic rate is the lowest. Their blue blood's hemocyanin binds and transports oxygen more efficiently than in other cephalopods, aided by gills with especially large surface area. The animals have weak musculature but maintain agility and buoyancy with little effort thanks to sophisticated statocysts (balancing organs akin to a human's inner ear) and ammonium-rich gelatinous tissues closely matching the density of the surrounding seawater.

This is the emblem I badly want

The geisha makes it look so Japanese! But it was available at the Tokyo gameshow in 2006,I wonder if there is another way to get it,I've checked and asked the emblems union and forums but no luck.
