Hamlet is surely the frontrunner for "Best play in the English Language". Macbeth, Othello, Julius Ceasar et cetera deserve almost as much praise. Early stuff is dodgy (Titus Andronicus, anyone?), as are the comedies (Midsummer Night's Dream is good, the rest are a bit iffy).

Personally, I think I preferred Twelfth Night to Midsummer Night's Dream. Granted, I'm going by the performances given at my high school >_>

I'd probably have included Twelfth Night with Midsummer Night's Dream had I thought of it. It's certainly one of the better comedies.

What opinion is there to have? He's quite simply one of the greatest playwrights who ever lived.

Romeo and Juliet isn't that great, though. Still good, but King Lear and Julius Caesar are infinitely better.

PannicAtack

I have to agree on Romeo and Juliet. I'm not as moved by it as I feel I should be. It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, just perhaps a touch lacklustre by Shakespeare standards.

I was planning to study those but theres a lot of people in my country who study that (its the most studyed career after law in the country) and therefore the "cut" to get into college would be extremely high (about 750 or 800 :S) so it would be a waste... also, I always loved medicine

I'd be surprised if Medicine was much easier to get into. In the UK, the level of competition is insane.

I'm looking to study Biology

I think its racist to only see skin color rather than considering the surrounding circumstances.

Its that type of mentality that give birth to stereotypes, racial profiling and unnecessary confrontation. Its those same hypocrites that label media as hostile and racially charged when it should be interpreted as otherwise. Resident Evil 5 for example grew some attention for having "black zombies." I think its wrong for any race to claim artisitic racial immunity because of sensitive events in the past.

Blue-Sky

I agree with the rest of your post, but I found Resi 5 to be questionable. I felt uneasy about it and I'd have been embarrased playing the game in company. Perhaps that's over-sensitivity on my part, but that was my gut feeling I have to say.

One thing I feel is that people should not do good things because they are God Fearing, or because they are promised reward for their deeds but because its the right thing to do in general.

lightleggy

In Christianity at least, you're not rewarded for your deeds. Good works don't get you into heaven.

in Christianity you can get rewarded for your deeds but you need to have accepted Christ as your savior first, its the main requisite, without it its not worth at all

This is going to derail the entire thread I know, and I apologise in advance, but doesn't it seem ignoble that God's main desire is to have people worship him? We wouldn't approve of this sort of behaviour in any other context.

I see no value in it myself. We're blobs of carbon on an infinitessimaly tiny rock (on a cosmological scale) in a universe with no capacity to care about us, and I'm fine with that.

I'm happy enough to liveand let live. Religion has too much influence in politics for my liking, and the nutcases are at best a nuisance and at worst homicidal, but I'm not going todevote anytime tobringing about its demise.

The Simpsons jumped the shark after season 11 when they god the new writers and completely changed the show. Now it's idiotic at best. :(

sammyjenkis898

Good lord, how did I forget about The Simpsons? The first 8 seasons or so (particularly season 5) are some of the best television there is.

I agree. up to season 9 it waspossibly the best programme on TV, afterwards it was watchable till season 13, whereupon it became painfully idiotic thereafter.

Futurama could go the same way, considering the quality of the films.

Lost maintained its standards in terms of entertainment, but the story spiralled out of control long ago.

I fail to see how marijuana can cause cancer if no one has ever died from it.

Stanley09

No-one has ever died from an overdose of cannabis. Plenty of people have died of lung cancer thathas beenlinked to cannabis use.

Ok, people have been saying "this year is the end of the world" for quite some time now and it hasen't happened yet. Now they are saying its 2012, well i guess we will find out but i bet you it isn't, Its like they are acting like the boy who cryed wolf or something.I understand that iv'e heard 2012 is the end of the world on the Mayan calender or something though.

MuddVader

People have claimed 2012 as the end for a long time though. Atleast thats the one with some backing to it. There are alot of possibilities. Some people think that an alien race came to earth in the past and taught primitive civilizations how to build advanced architectural marvels such as the Mayan and Egyptian Pyramids and will return again in 2012.

It's based on a misinterpretation of the Mayan calendar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayan_calendar#Long_Count

Not much of a backing.
