Actually I played Xenosaga 1 because it has certain relation to Xenogears. And yea, I got somehow bored halfway playing it (I remember the gears/robots where really ugly :( compared to Xenogears). A year or two since then, I start playing Xenosaga 2. I think the battle is one of the best part of it. Like you said, it's not just pressing the "x" button throughout the battle. And I think it's always fun meeting all characters again. But again I stopped again somewhere in the middle. Maybe I'll try play those again someday :D And I heard from my friend that Xenosaga 3 was the best. Is that for real?
If you are looking for an rpg, I would say go for it. You can read some reviews first just to make sure you're going to enjoy it because some of the system/features are not the same as other rpgs. But really, I think it's one of PS2's great rpg.
I'm not so sure about Xenosagas. I played Xenosaga 1 and 2 both halfways and stopped. Well, the stories are very good, no doubt about it. But the way that the stories are presented are kinda boring. Also I don't find the gameplay appealing in a specialway. My favorite rpg game is still Xenogears, where I think squaresoft has done a much better job.
It really depends on what genres you want to play. FFXII is obvioulsy rpg and dirge of cerberus is kinda like a FPS game. If genre doesn't matter, I would highly suggest to take get FFXII. Although dirge of cerberus is also a part of FFVII, I find it just to be a decent shooting game. I think wouldn't played it if it's not an FF game.
