do you use a bluetooth headset? if so what model
i experienced this problem with an old headset of mine, it interfered with the signal of the controller because the frequencies were too close together which caused buttons to press them selves ad stuff. if not sorry idk

It isn't on, so I don't think that could be the cause of the problem.
try charging your controller
and/or connecting it to your ps3

Just connected my controller to the PS3 and it is charging, though it is still doing this. Could it be going to a certain icon on the list and trying to spell something? It is trying to talk to me?! lol jk...But seriously.

It's not hard to understand .. his XMB is moving through the settings itself, without one of his controllers on .. so going from game to dvd to settings, by itself.
Maybe his neighbour accidently signal to his ps3 with his tv controller?
Like in Married With Children when Al get's the override controller .. oh man that would be weird, sitting at your friends window playing his PS3 ..
I used both of my controllers, and when I had one on, I turned on the other. If someone else was controlling it, my other controller would have gone to the third player, but it went to the second.
