and you could transferred your ownership of the game to the friend if you wanted, or better yet, put him on your family share circle and you both could've played.
Whiney is only partly correct, ignorant needs to be added.
you could sell it, lend it etc. Yes there were some exceptions, but you still could do most of what you could with a disc and then some. Family share, accessing you're game from any console were some great features. I'd gladly give up the ability to sell a game on ebay if it meant I could access my friends library. what you were no longer able to do was replaced with better features imo.
You can't game the same way with a digital library as you can with a disc, that's why most of what they were doing was needed.
