The difference is the features of the systems themselves. XBox One requires a 24 hour online check in to play. The PS4 does not. Used games can be used in the PS4 meaning it will be easier to loan games to friends. Sony decided that developers will have the final say if they decide to place any new feature or restrictions. The Xbox One has a more limited and technical feature that prevents players to freely lend their games or resell them.
These two were the most defining factors with the community. That and personally, as a game collector. DRM and online checks really have an uncertain future. The feature effectively causes you to be overly reliant to their servers to play and you really don't know how long will they be able to keep authenticating these system or games that you are unsure if you can freely play them after the next 1 to 2 generations of consoles is available.
@QuadThumbs 13 years? Do you collect games sir? Can I ask if its safe to say that their servers will be able to authenticate the system when I want to play the system and it's games for another 13 years? I really have no idea what will happen if they decided to suddenly stop supporting the system.
@the13stuff I have trouble finding it. DRM and their daily online checks makes the system too reliant with their servers and this already is the biggest problem. Which they can just shut down if they decide to move on. The question then would be will they decide to still support this machine if it's obsolete? Will I still be able to play it after new gen consoles appear after it?
Problem is, I am the only one in my family that actually plays console games. And I collect them, so that fact that I am unsure of what will happen to a console that requires me to log in daily to play after years have gone by and another system replaces this or if they decided to stop supporting with their servers to authenticate it prevents me from thinking that this is a worthwhile product to my collection.
@kazama99 Don't forget that if you actually look into it as a collector. MS online check ins seems to be a problem. It's not certain if they would actually support it long enough that you can get back on the system without worrying if they decided to stop supporting it and shuts down their servers. Preventing you from authenticating your system and effectively stops you from playing.
@lowgman1234 Yeah, nobody actually cared that much about the change since it was a minor issue. PS+ has enough benefits that it's worthwhile to subscribe even for other reasons alone.
@kazama99 As an example, Sony did decide to remove the backwards compatibility feature on the PS3 when they introduced the Slim version. I recall the reason was technical and performance issues. So I assume that if needed, they can indeed do something about it.
Besides, based on past history with most early releases. These versions tend to have some problems at launch. And really, they do like to release different versions of the consoles after a few years of their release.
