@xolivierx: I love the irony of your comment juxtaposed against your Slime pic (historically speaking, of course).
Just for reference, here is a list of the PS4 launch line-up over at IGN, http://ca.ign.com/wikis/playstation-4/PlayStation_4_Launch_Titles . I just think that this whole debate is silly. Every console starts out with a limited day one vocabulary. To be honest, I myself am playing Zelda on my WiiU, but that's just because I couldn't find a Switch in Eastern Canada.
I have never complained about graphics before. I usually defend games as long as the gameplay is strong. But that...looks like contemporary free-to-play quality all around. I really hope I'm wrong.
@Klyern: I'll put the figures to you in the Japan context (hardware): 20,000,000 individual 3DS units (equivalent to 1/6th of Japan's population) versus 4,000,000 units including PSTV (equivalent to 1/30th of Japan's population). Software is the same story: perhaps what you want is more readily available, but that is a subjective opinion.
I am guessing that you've never been to Japan. Sorry if I've guessed incorrectly. While working there for four years as a HS teacher, I witnessed first hand which was the more popular system & which had more games people were playing (at work, on the trains, etc). As I've said, I've also observed these trends at TGS & other games conferences in Japan. You can't move very far anywhere in Japan without filling your street pass or seeing people actively gaming on a 3DS: you can go weeks or more before seeing someone with a vita.
Used game stores are the same story: they're filled with row upon row GBA, DS, & 3DS titles. PSP & Vita often relegated to less than a row combined, at least 1/3 of which are dating sims or the weird RPGs that involve removing articles of clothing (including one that involves utilizing both touch pads to...do something that should not be mentioned on GS). Have you looked at the Japanese Vita store? It's pretty sparse.
I'm not sure what is informing your concepts of sales figures & success. Maybe it's due to the sudden increase in Japan's vita sales due to the PS4's release. But no, if the vita were a console, it's story sounds eerily similar to that of the Dreamcast: good aspiration, poor implementation.
