Naruto Episode 88: The Konoha Mark and the Forehead Protector

Sakara sits anxiously by Sasuke's hospital bed, watching over him while he recovers.

Meanwhile, Orochimaru's body is deteriorating fast. Kabuto invites him to take the medicine he's prepared but nothing seems to help. Only one person can - if she will, and she's in Tanzaku City.

Naruto looks at the spiral Jiraiya just drew on the palm of his hand. Jiraiya then holds up a blank piece of paper. He follows up with one with a spiral on it. When Naruto looks at the plain sheet, he glances at the entire paper. However, with a spiral in the center, Naruto is immediately drawn to a point of concentration and his mind stabilizes. The same is true for his technique. He must concentrate all his chakra to that one point in the center of his hand.

Jiraiya leaves Naruto to continue practicing while Orochimaru and Kabuto head towards Tanzaku City. The journey is difficult, and Orochimaru often falls in pain.

Jiraiya tries to put Naruto out of his mind and search for information about Tsunade. He is only hard on his young apprentice because he sees such potential - like the Fourth. He must complete this training by himself.

Meanwhile, Tsunade tries her luck at slots and repeatedly gets the 777 winning combination. She senses that it must be an omen and that she and Shi*une should leave town immediately.

Jiraiya watches Naruto's training from a distance. Naruto is hurting and decides to rest. He puts his forehead protector aside and falls asleep. When he wakes, he discovers a leaf on his forehead where his protector should be. The image reminds him of Iruka. One day, Iruka had taken him, Choji, Kiba, and Shikamaru aside and tried to teach them a lesson in concentration. He had them hold a life on their forehead with their chakra, concentrating all their energy on that leaf, so their minds wouldn't get distracted. This was the reason behind the Konoha leaf. But the boys were antsy and Naruto blew off training. Now he wishes he would have listened. He looks down at his palm and draws the Konoha symbol and resumes training. He focuses on the symbol and the ball explodes with such great force that it knocks him backwards. Jiraiya points out that he was able to accumulate such great chakra that he burnt his hand.

Meanwhile, Shi*une can't believe Tsunade's good fortune, which Tsunade senses something terrible is about to happen. Sure enough, Tanzaku Castle explodes behind them and Orochimaru appears, standing on the head of his great serpent.

Naruto Episode 87: Guts!! Pop, Water Balloon!

Jiraiya has given Naruto the task of rotating the water in the balloon so that it pops. Naruto is confident that he'll accomplish this stage of the training by tonight.

Jiraiya naps while Naruto struggles, and by evening, Naruto begs Jiraiya for a tip. Jiraiya looks at Naruto's hair swoosh to learn he's a clockwise rotation. In order for the technique to work, he'll have to counterbalance his body clockwise energy with his spirit chakra and rotate the water in the balloon counterclockwise. With renewed confidence, Naruto vows to complete the technique in three days. Jiraiya casually informs Naruto that it took three whole years for the Fourth to fully master this technique - its difficulty is ranked the second highest of six levels and it is considered an A-rank supper high ninja technique. He must master it in three steps and popping the balloon is only the first.

Jiraiya leaves Naruto to train and heads back to town where he is immediately distracted by a few girls.

Naruto continues his training for the next three days but can't manage to pop the balloon. Now frustrated, he tries to access what he's doing differently from Jiraiya. After breakfast, he notices a cat playing with a water balloon. It bats the balloon back and forth between its paws until the balloon pops. Naruto suddenly understands. Happily, he goes shows Jiraiya, who still reeks of alchohol, what he's learned. He uses his left hand to mold the balloon with random movements until it pops in his hand.

Jiraiya thinks Naruto's technique is weird but is happy Naruto finally understood the technique. Naruto explains that he noticed that when the cat played with the balloon, it rotated the water in a number of directions. He remembered that when Jiraiya demonstrated the technique, he too rotated the water in multiple directions. But until then, Naruto had only rotated it in the same direction.

For Naruto's second stage, Jiraiya tells Naruto he must pop a rubber ball. While the first step emphasized rotation, this step focuses on power. And because there is no water in the ball, the task will be more difficult. Naruto asks Jiraiya to stay and train, but Jiraiya refuses and acts as if he has no obligations to train him.

For the next few days, Naruto tries repeatedly to break the ball, but fails each time. Jiraiya senses his frustration and asks him to take a break and go buy food in town. There, he overhears a kid asking his father for a popsicle. The father splits the two sides down the middle and gives his son half so not to spoil his dinner. Later, Naruto again asks Jiraiya to supervise his training and again Jiraiya refuses coldly. This is a technique Naruto must learn on his own. Jiraiya passes the next three weeks with the girls he met while Naruto continues to try to master this technique.

Finally, Naruto realizes that the ball won't pop unless he can make it pop as quick as possible. He puts all his effort into it and this time, a small hole appears in the ball and the air leaks out. Jiraiya congratulates him for coming this far and hands him a popsicle. He then asks Naruto for his right hand and places a black spiral in the center.

Naruto Episode 86: Training Commences - I Swear Im Going to Become Stronger

Jiraiya and Naruto leave Sasuke with Gai and then head off to find Tsunade. Before they leave, Gai gives Naruto a green training suit like Lee's. Naruto is thrilled with his new attire, but Jiraiya won't be caught dead with someone wearing that nasty green leotard.

As Naruto and Jiraiya continue on their quest, Itachi's words haunt Naruto. He asks Jiraiya why the Atasuki might want him. Jiraiya explains they're after the Nine Tails, a mystic beast that destroys everything in its path. He doesn't know what they'd do with Kyubi, but as long as the fox is sealed inside Naruto, they'll come after him.

Meanwhile, Tsunade heads to the gambling center with the highest wage and asks to join the game.

Naruto asks Jiraiya about Tsunade. He explains she's one of the legendary Sennin who loves to gamble at it but has horrible luck. She's known as the legendary sucker. She also doesn't like aging, so she's probably changed her appearance.

Soon, Naruto is ready to train as they continue and pulls out the suit Gai gave him. Jaraiya tries desperately to convince him not to wear the hideous green suit. Luckily, they arrive in a festive town and Naruto is distracted. He pulls out his frog wallet brimming full of his life savings and anticipates the fun he'll have. Jiraiya chides him for thinking of spending his money here and warns him of the three taboos for a ninja - alcohol, women, and money. He then hands Naruto a few bills to spend and keeps the wallet.

Naruto parts from Jiraiya's company and wanders around the festival. He tries a number of dishes and plays a few games. He then buys some squid and heads back in search of the Sennin. Much to Naruto's dismay, he finds Jiraiya in the company of several girls and his empty wallet. As Naruto reprimands Jiraiya, two men appear behind them, and in Naruto's haste, he actually throws his squid at one of the men, leaving a stain on the man's shirt. The man reveals that he's the killer ninja, Yaminin, of Hidden Village of the Rock, and demands payment. Jiraiya's not impressed and easily defeats the two.

He then decides to teach Naruto the new technique he just performed on Yaminin and his friend. He gives Naruto a bunch of water balloons and demonstrates how to rotate the water inside the balloon without moving his hand. Naruto should accumulate and maintain chakra in his hand like the tree climbing exercise. He should then release a constant amount of chakra like the water walk exercise. And finally, he is to push and rotate the water inside the balloon. If he can create a sharp enough rotation, the balloon will burst.

Naruto Episode 85: Foolish Little Brother Hate and Detest!

Jiraiya realized that Itachi used an illusory technique to separate him from Naruto and raced back to the hotel in time to find them. Itachi confirms that the Akasuki wants Naruto. As Jiraiya prepares to attack, Sasuke tells him not to interfere. He will be the one to kill his brother. Jiraiya respects Sasuke's wishes, but it doesn't take much for Itachi to mess Sasuke up pretty badly. He breaks his arm and then pounds him again and again. Finally, he pulls him against the wall and calls him weak because he lacks hatred. He again uses Mangekyou Sharingan to force Sasuke to relive that day for the next 24 hours.

Naruto can't watch his teammate suffer anymore and runs at Itachi. Jiraiya uses Ninpou Gamaguchi Shibari (Frog Mouth Trap) to pull Sasuke away from Itachi and capture the two Atasuki. His technique turns the walls of the hotel into a frog's stomach. But Itachi is able to use a strange black flame to burn through Jiraiya's technique and they escape.

Jiraiya is fascinated that Itachi knew how to break his technique. He then uses Fuuinjutsu Fuukahouin (Sealing Technique, Fire Suppressor) to contain the black flames and store them in a scroll.

Once the danger is gone, Gai shows up to tend to Sasuke while Jiraiya and Naruto ponder their next move. Naruto wants to go after Itachi, but Jiraiya informs him that he's much too weak. Gai mentions that Itachi was able to use a similar technique on Kakashi earlier and now Kakashi's unconscious. He hopes they find Tsunade, the medical specialist. The women with the word gambler on her back.

Naruto Episode 84: Growl Chidori, Roar Sasuke!

Sasuke runs frantically in search of Naruto. He flashes back to when he was 8. He had asked his brother to help him with a technique after school. Itachi had replied that he was too busy and that Sasuke should ask dad to help. Sasuke pouts. Itachi always treats him like a nuisance and never wants to spend time with him. Later, chibi Sasuke asks his parents if Itachi like shim. Dad says even he doesn't understand Itachi. It seems like he doesn't like interacting with people.

Itachi had always been talented. He graduated from the Academy at age 7 and became Chuunin at 10. He learned how to use the sharingan at 8. Sasuke remembers Aunt Shi*u telling him that if he was confidence in himself, he too, could one day be like his brother.

That day, Sasuke ran home from school to find Itachi crouched on top of a telephone pole. When he looked again, Itachi was gone. Chibi Sasuke notices all the lights are off in the village, but it's not bedtime yet, and starts to grow concerned. Then suddenly it dawns on him. The village has been attacked. He sees dead bodies everywhere. He immediately runs home to check on his parents. When he runs to the main room, he senses someone inside. He opens the door to find his parents dead bodies and Itachi standing over them. Itachi soon reveals that he was the clan's exterminator, and with his special Mangekyou Sharingan, he allows Sasuke to relive the day.

Sasuke is nauseated by the horrible scene he is forced to relive. He weakly asks Itachi why he would do such a thing. Itachi replies coldly that he wanted to see what he was capable of. Sasuke can't contain his rage and charges at his brother, only to be met with an uppercut that knocks the wind out of him. He falls limply beside his parents' bodies. Fearful, Sasuke's adrenaline kicks in and he takes off, running for his life. Anywhere will do, but he must escape his brother. He begs Itachi to let him live. Itachi is amused and exclaims that the boy isn't worthy of killing. His final words - If you wish to kill me, hate me, detest me, and survive in an unsightly way, do so. Run and cling to life.

Back in Shikuba town, Sasuke catches up to his brother, who has taken Naruto captive. He powers up chidori and runs, full of rage, at his brother. Itachi easily deflects the blow. Naruto taps into his Nine Tails chakra to defend his friend, but Hoshigaki uses his sword, Samehada, to devour Naruto's chakra.

Luckily, Jiraiya appears…

Naruto Episode 83: Jiraiyas Woman Troubles, Narutos Misfortune!

Naruto and Jiraiya venture to Otafuku Village in search of the legendary Sennin, Tsunade. As they travel, Jiraiya draws parallels between Naruto and the Fourth (a hint about Naruto's lineage, perhaps?) Naruto jumps for joy at the possibility.

Back at Konoha, Sakura's mom asks her to take a basket of sweets to Ino. She thinks perhaps she should share them with her teammates as she remembers Sasuke's words. He hadn't been the one to save her from Gaara. Naruto did. He had demonstrated his true strength that day.

Not surprisingly, Sasuke hasn't taken his helplessness in the Gaara fight lightly. With visions of Naruto's techniques motivating him, Sasuke trains even harder.

Itachi trails Naruto and Jiraiya, as Jiraiya tells Naruto a bit about his own Genin training. The Third taught his group, made up of Tsunade, Orochimaru, and himself. When the Third had made them to the bells test, Tsunade and Orochimaru ended up with the bells, while Jiraiya ended up tied to a post.

Meanwhile, Gai, Kurenai, and Asuma tend to Kakashi's wounds. Sasuke enters and suspects something is up when he finds Kakashi sleeping in the middle of the day, but the other jounin cover. Unfortunately, Ebisu barges into the room to exclaim that Itachi was in town and wants Naruto. After hearing news about his brother's intentions, Sasuke tears out of the room as fast as he can to warn his teammate. He learns from the ramen shop owner that Naruto went to Shikuba town earlier that day with Jiraiya.

Naruto and Jiraiya get a hotel room in Shikuba town, and soon, Jiraiya is out scouting for women leaving Naruto by himself. Someone knocks, and Naruto opens the door to find Itachi staring down at him.

Naruto Episode 82: Sharingan vs Sharingan!!

Kakashi uses his sharingan to mirror Hoshigaki's water technique and then turns his attention to Itachi. Why are they there?

Meanwhile, Jiraiya invites Naruto on an adventure to find Tsunade. Naruto reacts skeptically, so Jiraiya teases him by offering to take Sasuke instead. And, he'll teach Sasuke a more powerful technique than chidori. Of course, Naruto's interest peaks and he excitedly volunteers to come along.

Kakashi knows that Hoshigaki is one of the Seven Shinobi-gatana of the Mist and he carries a large blade. He had heard that Zabuza had fought them. Itachi's not amused and reminds Hoshigaki that they didn't come here to fight but to find something. Sensing that these three jounin are not going to allow them to tend to their business, Itachi pulls out some shuriken as Kakashi does Ninpou Suiton Suijinheki (Water Wall). Itachi counters, using the shurikan in his right hand as a decoy and performing water seals with the other.

Kakashi then warns the others that Itachi is quite powerful. He was an Anbu squad leader at 13! Itachi is amused that Kakashi can use the sharingan, but because he's not of Uchiha blood, he can't control it as well. Kakashi warns Asuma and Kurenai not to look into Itachi's eyes. Only another sharingan can. But Itachi shrugs off the suggestion that Kakashi might be able to fight toe to toe with him and uses his special illusionary technique, Tsukuyomi (God of the Moon).

Itachi's Tsukuyomi takes Kakashi into an illusionary world where he is able to control time and space. He binds Kakashi to a cross and repeatedly stabs him with a sword for what amounts to 72 hours in the illusionary world, but in the real world, it's only a matter of minutes. The technique is quite freaky - a number of Kakashis are bound to crosses and a number of Itachis repeatedly stab him over and over.

When Itachi is finished, Kakashi collapses and Hoshigaki warns him not to use his technique too much. Kakashi asks if they are after Sasuke, but Itachi clarifies that Naruto is their intended target. Kakashi flashes back to when Jiraiya told him that he would train Naruto. He had suspected that the Atasuki, a group of nine ninjas, most of which are S-rank criminals, might come after the Nine Tails. Orochimaru used to be a member of this group, but he left recently.

Kakashi's in no shape to continue the fight, but luckily, Gai shows up. And, after being Kakashi's main rival for years, he understands the way to fight the Sharingan. Never look into their eyes, but use your peripheral vision to anticipate their actions. Sensing that Gai will give them some trouble, Itachi stops the battle (and sadly, we don't get to see Gai kick Itachi's butt…)



Naruto Episode 81: Return of the Morning Mist

After the Hokage’s funeral, two powerful ninjas - Itachi and Hoshigaki- make their way towards Konoha’s gate.

Meanwhile, Sasuke confronts his past. He still feels guilty that he wasn't strong enough to protect his parents. Naruto spends the morning training and then heads out for breakfast. On his way to the ramen stand, he notices Konohamaru staring at the cracked rock face of his beloved grandfather. He tries to be strong, but Naruto senses his pain and hands him a free meal pass.

Elsewhere, several Sand nin find two dead bodies - one being Kazikage - and realize that Orochimaru and Kabuto tricked them.

Kabuto tends to Orochimaru's useless arms. He is fuming that his battle with the Hokage cost him his arms and techniques. And Itachi is still stonger than he is…

Jiraiya spends his morning watching girls in the local bathhouse until two of Konoha's advisors, Homura and Koharu-sensei, ask him to become Hokage. The Sand have already admitted they had been tricked and surrendered. But Konoha has lost many nin and resources and is vulnerable to attack until the village's power is restored. They need a Fifth Hokage to guide them, and Jiraiya was nominated. He declines the position, but offers to find his fellow Sennin, Tsunade. And, he'll take Naruto to accompany him.

Kakashi calls for Sasuke while Kurenai and Asuma check out the two new visitors to Konoha. Itachi lifts his hat to reveal his sharingan, and the two jounin immediately recognize the legendary Uchiha. His companion is Hoshigaki Kisame, a former Hidden Village of Mist ninja now wanted by numerous countries for sabotage and assassinating a feudal lord. The jounin are surprised that Itachi would have the nerve to return to the village where he so brutally annihilated his clan, but he warns them that they have no business getting involved with his affairs. He has not come back to kill them.

Convinced these Akatsuki members are up to no good, Asuma and Kurenai prepare to fight. Asuma attempts an illusory technique against Itachi (can you say dumb move?), while Asuma struggles with Hoshigaki's blade, Samehada. As things are looking bleak for the jounin, Kakashi shows up.

Naruto Episode 80: Third, Farewell Forever

Enma pulls the sword from Sarutobi's limp body before he disappears. Orochimaru is pissed now that he no longer has use of his arms. His four Gate nins tend to him, while Kidoumaru uses Ninpou Kumoshibari (Spider Entanglement) to stop the Anbu from following them as they make their escape. Kakashi and Gai confront Kabuto, still in his Anbu disguise, but he is able to escape.

Meanwhile, Gaara's grip on Sakura disintegrates and Sasuke catches her before she falls to the ground. He then asks Pakkun to look after her and heads after Naruto. Exhausted, Naruto looks over at Gaara and thinks about how everyone used to call him a monster and how lonely he felt. He realizes how similar they are. Still, he must succeed, and tries to inch himself to Gaara's limp body. Gaara asks why he continues. Naruto explains that he understands Gaara's pain, but he must protect the people important to him. He will kill him if he must. Those people acknowledged his existence and make living worthwhile. Gaara finally realizes that Naruto is fighting for those he loves.

Temari and Kankuro are amazed to find their sibling in such a weakened state. They are prepared to finish off Naruto, but Gaara tells them to stop. He then apologizes to his siblings as they carry him away.

Meanwhile, the jounin find Sarutobi's body, still with the smile on his face.

A few days later, the villagers mourn the death of the Third. Clad in black attire, one by one, each pays his respect to their fallen leader. Konohamaru cries beside Naruto, as Iruka tries to comfort him. He remembers the death of his own parents and how Sarutobi had found him at their grave crying. He had embraced Iruka and explained that he wasn't alone. Everyone in Konoha was his family.

Jiraiya has fond memories of his former sensei, while Naruto asks Iruka why people risk their lives for others. Iruka explains that those who die have goals and dreams, but everyone has someone important to them. That bond grows stronger with time and is the reason. Kakashi adds that the Third didn't die in vain. He left something for everyone.

Soon the rain stops and the sun comes out… and in the distance, Itachi is looming…

Naruto Episode 79: Break the Limit! Light and Darkness

Shukaku isn't intimidated by the Nine Tails and uses Fuuton Renkuudan to attack the rapidly approaching fox. Kyubi easily dodges his attacks and finally grabs hold, catapulting Naruto onto Shukaku as Gamabunta transforms back to his toad form. Naruto is able to wake Gaara, but he immediately tries Desert Coffin. Gamabunta uses his tongue to protect Naruto.

Meanwhile, the battle between Orochimaru and Sarutobi continues deadlocked. Orochimaru taunts that Konoha is being attacked by the Sand and Sound. All his people will die.

Cut to the center of Konoha when the attacking ninjas realize that all the women and children have been evacuated. The signal is given and Konaha begins its counterattack. Hiashi Hyuuga byakugan's and takes out a number of his attackers, while the elder Nara-Akamichi-Yamanaka trio reunites to defend the village. The Hokage senses his villagers won't give up without a fight and explains that when you protect someone important, true strength will manifest.

Naruto quickly glances at Sakura's helpless body and remembers Sasuke's words - to rescue Sakura no matter what. He then asks Kyubi for help and powers up. He and Gaara continue to exchange blows until Naruto head butts Gaara, and Shukaku disappears. Gamabunta and Gamakishi head back to their own realms, and Naruto and Gaara fall to the forest floor, exhausted and depleted of chakra.

The Hokage realizes his time has come and he won't be able to take Orochimaru's soul with him. Before he dies, Sarutobi pulls one last technique - to bind Orochimaru's arms. He now will no longer be able to use any ninja techniques or form seals. With that satisfaction, Sarutobi dies with a smile on his face.
