Naruto Episode 78: Explosion! These are the Naruto Ninja Chronicles!

So, Naruto vows that he will beat Gaara. He Kage bunshins, and after some quick movement, he manages to get behind Gaara. Finding Gaara's weak spot, Naruto shoves his kunai up Gaara's ass for 1000 Years of Pain! An unhappy Gaara knocks Naruto back as the kunai tag explodes. Unfortunately, Gaara's sand armor absorbs most of the blow and Gaara's ready to continue the fight.

Sasuke uses the brief interlude to reveal his softer side - he's already lost everything once. He won't let another important friend die before him. Cue the music - Sasuke's not such a bad guy after all (well, at least not yet…) and he even likes Naruto, much to Naruto's glee! The encouragement gives Naruto the motivation to continue onward as he remembers what Haku told him so long ago - being strong means fighting for yourself. He then powers up and again Kage Bunshins. Sasuke watches helplessly, surprised that Naruto has become so powerful. After a few lucky shots, Gaara is thrown backwards and falls to the ground below.

But Gaara's tired of playing around and completes his transformation to the mighty Shukaku - a particularly large, and quite unattractive, raccoon about the size of Gamabunta - and destroying all the Naruto clones in the process.

Naruto quickly summons Gamabunta just in time to avoid Desert Funeral. The frog king isn't thrilled to see Shukaku and begins taunting Naruto until Gamakichi hops onto Naruto's head and takes Naruto's side. Gamabunta is surprised to see him, and after hearing how Shukaku had been picking on him, Gamabunta's ready to join the fight.

Seeing the large toad run full speed at the insane raccoon with a sword is one of the more entertaining things I've seen. This battle is truly ridiculous. Gamabunta manages to get close enough to slice off one of Shukaku's arms and it dissolves to sand. After some brief instructions from Naruto on where Sakura is being held, Gamabunta continues his assault.

Shukaku then reveals Gaara's human body - his medium. Gamabunta explains that because the demon raccoon has possessed Gaara, he has been unable to sleep at night. That's why he has such large, black rings around his eyes. If Gaara was to fall asleep, Shukaku would gradually eat away at his personality until nothing remained. Shukaku's powers are also limited while Gaara is awake, but once he falls asleep, the Wild Raccoon will emerge in complete control.

With Tanuki Neiri no Jutsu! (Forced Sleep Technique), Gaara falls asleep and Shukaku's true personality emerges. He does Fuuton Renkuudan! (Wind Element, Compressed Air Ball) send an air blast at Gamabunta, who dodges and uses Suiton Teppoudama! (Water Element, Gun Bullet) to counter with a water technique.

The monster battle rages on until Gamabunta instructs Naruto to wake Gaara up. Easier said than done - they must first get close enough to the raccoon for Naruto to jump onto his head. And the large toad isn't very good at grabbing a hold of things. So, Naruto must transform into something that has fangs and claws. Of course, the first thing to come to mind is the Demon Fox, and soon Kyubi's form is racing at Shukaku.

Naruto Episode 77: List and Darkness. The Name Gaara.

Naruto attacks Gaara in a futile attempt to save his friends. Gaara taunts that Naruto is weak because he fights to save others. People that bring unnecessary emotion into battle should die. As Naruto attacks, Gaara uses his monstrous tail to send Naruto flying backwards.

Gaara's memory of Yashamaru's betrayal fuels his current wrath. Yashamaru had explained that Gaara's father, Kazekage, had ordered his death. He has always been a guinea pig, born with the spirit of shukaku imprisoned within him. Now, because he still cannot control his own demon, his existence is a threat to the village.

Gaara must understand, though. Yashamaru could have refused Kazekage's order, but deep within his heart, he harbored feelings of hatred for the child. He tried to love his sister's treasured child, but he also knew that she never wished for his birth. She was a sacrifice and died cursing the village. Before she died, she named the child Gaara - an asura that loves himself. (Note: an asura is a demon in Hindu mythology.) He is to love no one but himself, for that's the only way he will survive. While she didn't love Gaara, she hoped for his preservation - so her deep hatred would continue to plague the village.

As Yashamaru reveals to Gaara that he was never loved, he opens his jacket to reveal explosion tags. Again, Gaara's sand protects him from the explosion's impact. He sits alone on the roof, remembering Yashamaru's last words. And so Gaara now had a purpose - a purpose symbolized on his forehead as the character for love - to love only himself and to never care about others.

In the present, a frantic Naruto tries to summon Gamabunta, but fails miserably as a tiny frog appears. By this time, Gaara continues his transformation, explaining that the sand holding Sakura won't be released until Naruto defeats him. And it will tighten its grip as time passes.

Naruto thinks of his own demon - the Nine Tails - sealed away inside him. He remembers how everyone hated him. Everyone, but Iruka. His past was his own personal hell because of it. But now, he has his fellow genin teammates and Kakashi. Without them, he might have become like Gaara.

Naruto uses Kage Bushin , but Gaara does Mugen Sajin Daitoppa (Wind Element, Infinite Sand Gust Storm) to destroy the clones with one breath. While things look dismal for Naruto, he vows not to give up - even if it means his life.

Naruto Episode 76: Assassin under the Moonlight

Naruto arrives in the nick of time to save a helpless, chakra-depleted Sasuke from Gaara's rage. Catching a glimpse of Gaara's now monstrous form, he stares in disbelief. Meanwhile, Sakura notices the cursed seal's presence on Sasuke's body and realizes Kakashi hadn't been 100% accurate with her.

Sasuke flashes back to his training with Kakashi - if he was to attempt a third chidori, he would be putting himself in grave danger because of the seal. Once he lets the seal take over, he will no longer be in control of himself. Not willing to give up quite yet, he makes an attempt to reduce the seal's influence over him. Gaara uses the opportunity to strike, but Sakura steps in front - just like Yashamaru did so long ago with the school children. He bats Sakura out of the way, while Naruto grabs Sasuke and moves him from harm's way.

Naruto finds himself in a bad situation. An enraged Gaara now has Sakura pinned to a tree. He must fight for the lives of his teammates, but he has no idea how to fight something with such murderous intent. Meanwhile, Gaara remains perplexed by Gai, Sakura and Yashamaru's actions to protect those they care about.

Gaara remembers an incident he had as a small child. He had tried to cut himself so that he too could feel pain, but his sand protected him, despite his attempts. Yashamaru saw what he was doing and tried to comfort him. Gaara had felt guilty for hurting his caretaker and asks if Yashamaru now hated him. Yashamaru explained that while people may get hurt or hurt others, that emotion is different from hate. Gaara points to his chest and explains that his heart always hurts. Yashamaru then takes Gaara's knife and cuts himself. He explains that flesh wounds heal with time and medicine, but emotional wounds take longer and require another's love to heal. Gaara received this healing love from his mother, who gave her life so that Gaara would always be protected by the shukaku of the sand. His mother's spirit still lives within that sand and wants to protect him.

With his new found wisdom, chibi Gaara decides to try to make amends with all the children he almost killed. He runs door to door, with ointment in hand, only to have each door slammed in his face. He heads home, disheartened and alone, wondering why he is such a monster. As he collapses into a bout of self pity, several kunai fly at him. His wall of sand reacts, and he kills his attacker easily with desert coffin. When he investigates the body, he learns that Yashamaru has betrayed him
.

Naruto Episode 75: Exceeding the Limit Sasukes Decision!

A partially transformed Gaara uses his beast arm to attack Sasuke, leaving Sasuke baffled as to how to hurt this hateful creature.

Mentally unstable, Gaara flashes back to a childhood moment. Chibi Gaara sits alone on a swing while kids around him play soccer. One kicks the ball up onto a tall cliff. As the kids stand at the cliff's base wondering how to get their ball back, Gaara decides to play nice and uses his sand to retrieve the lost ball. Unfortunately, Gaara's mere presence terrifies the kids and they run away screaming. Gaara's sand, which he doesn't seem to have full control of, grabs the kids' legs and pulls them back. Yashamaru gets there just in time to stop any potential bloodshed, but Gaara taps into that anger welling inside him to fuel his rage towards Sasuke.

Sasuke, meanwhile, flashes back to his training session with Kakashi before the Chuunin.
Gaara had called him his prey. When Sasuke asked why Gaara was so obsessed with him, he replied that Sasuke's eyes know true solitude, the worst kind of pain. They have the same eyes. Eyes that seek power and are full of murderous intent. Eyes that are itching to kill the one who did this. Gaara declares that the purpose of their battle will be to prove who is the strongest - to prove whose existence means more - a battle to the death.

In the present, Gaara taps into Sasuke's weak spot - his fear of his brother. Itachi wanted an avenger to kill him, and Sasuke just so happened to be that person. Not yet willing to give in, Sasuke prepares his chidori.

Meanwhile, Sarutobi is still struggling to pull out Orochimaru's soul back on the roof.

Gaara and Sasuke attack one another, and chidori cuts through Gaara’s monstrous hand. Gaara laughs and gets back up, as Temari watches in amazement. Gaara's really enjoying fighting someone who can actually cause him pain. Killing Sasuke will give him an even stronger will to live.

Gaara then continues his transformation by growing a tail. Sasuke's now at a disadvantage because he can no longer use chidori. He attacks with Katon Goukakyuu no Jutsu! (Fire Element, Blazing Fireball) to shoot fire at Gaara. Gaara counters with his Shukaku side as a shield and attacks to smack Sasuke backwards into a tree. Sasuke remembers Kakashi telling him that his limit for chidori is 2 shots - he can only use chidori twice in one day at his current level. Kakashi, on the other hand, can use 4 until he's maxed out his chakra. If Sasuke were to attempt more than his limit, Kakashi warns him that it won’t function properly and his chakra will be reduced to zero. In the worst case scenario, he’ll die. If he does survive, it will have bad effect on him. The bottom line - don't try it.

Gaara continues to insult Sasuke. He is weak and his existence is worthless. He just doesn’t have that murderous intent that Gaara has. Sasuke grows more pissed and decides that he'll try chidori again. As he attempts the forbidden third chidori, he drops, completely out of chakra. Gaara hovers, preparing to attack a helpless Sasuke, who's lying on a tree branch motionless.

Luckily, Naruto makes it there just in time. He goes after Gaara while Sakura and Pakkun attend to Sasuke's wounds.

Naruto Episode 74: Astonishment! Gaaras True Identity

Pakkun senses a battle up ahead and decides to take an alternative route to avoid the combat area. Meanwhile, Gaara awakens, anticipating Sasuke isn't far behind.

Yes, Shino fans will be happy to know that the boy actually gets more than 2 seconds in the limelight in this episode as he and Kankuro start their battle. Kankuro uses his puppet control technique to attack Shino with his marionette, which is even more freaky deadly with its poisonous blades. Shino dodges easily.

Gaara freaks out when he sees Sasuke and starts ranting about how Sasuke has friends and goals. He will take pleasure in killing Sasuke - so he can be known as the one who erased Sasuke's existence. Sasuke flashes back to his Chuunin session with Kakashi when Gaara randomly showed up. Gaara knew how to get to the heart of Sasuke's insecurities. He asked him why he sought power. That they had the same eyes - eyes that seek power and are filled with hate and murderous intent. Gaara senses that Sasuke is very similar to him. Back in the present, Gaara screams out in pain, and Shukaku begins his transformation.

Meanwhile, Shino is holding his own with Kankuro, who is weak when it comes to close range attacks. He also must control his puppet, Karasu, which requires focus. Shino creates a clone of himself and uses his bugs as a decoy to move in closer. Sensing an opening, Kankuro uses poisonous gas and hides amidst the foliage.

Back at the Orochimaru/Sarutobi battle, Enma cheers Sarutobi on. If he gives up now, the village will perish. He must persevere.

Meanwhile, Gaara's arm completely transforms and he swings wildly, wiping out several trees in the process, but missing Sasuke.

Shino sets a trap for Kankuro. As Karasu gets closer, Shino uses his bugs to block the puppet's joints, immobilizing it. The bugs then move along the chakra lines and eat their way to Kankuro. He drops, covered in chakra eating bugs and the battle is over. Unfortunately, Shino also passes out from the poison, so both boys are out for the count.

Naruto Episode 73: Forbidden Master Techique! Shiki Fuujin.

Sarutobi vows to defeat Orochi and protect the village as he prepares the Fourth's Demon Soul Seal technique. Orochimaru is fascinated. A technique he doesn’t know? He asks Sarutobi to show him!

Sarutobi splits into 3 to be on equal grounds with Orochimaru, the First and Second. His two clones grab the former Hokages as the Death God permeates through his body and into each of theirs. The darkness dissipates and each Hokage disappears.

As the former Hokates die, Sarutobi remembers their words of guidance when they chose him as Hokage. He must protect his village at all costs. The Death God reaches through the Third's body and grabs onto Orochimaru's spirit. Orochimaru uses the sword of Kusanagi to strike the Third in hopes of escaping the Death God's grasp.

Outside, Jiraiya appears and easily defeats the summoned snake. He immediately asks where the Third is.

Back on the roof, Enma tries to stop the sword of Kusanagi, but it still manages to pierce Sarutobi's body. Orochimaru asks why Sarutobi didn't dodge the attack. He explains that using the technique will cost him his life, but he will take Orochimaru's soul with him when he dies. This was the technique that sealed the nine tails. Now, both his and Orochimaru's soul will be forever locked in combat - forever tormented in the Death God's stomach. Sensing how serious Sarutobi is, Orochimaru starts to get a bit nervous. He tries to muster enough strength to move the sword of Kusanagi, hoping that he can kill Sarutobi before his soul is extracted.

Back in the forest, Sasuke catches up with Kankuro, and Temari's not far behind. She takes Gaara while Kankuro decides to hold off Sasuke. But wait! Shino appears, allowing Sasuke to go after Gaara while he faces Kankuro.

Naruto Episode 72: The Hokages Mistake: The True Face Under the Mask

Pakkun senses that Sasuke caught up with the Sand as Temari makes the strategical decision to stay and fight Sasuke while Kankuro buys Gaara more time.

Temari's low on chakra from her match with Shikamaru, but holds her own for a while. She uses her fan to send a gushing wind at Sasuke, who wonders if he should just use chidori to finish her off now. He decides to hold out for his fight with Gaara, giving Temari a window of opportunity to attack with Ninpou Kamaitachi (Sickling Winds). Her wind attacks cut through several tree branches and keep Sasuke on the move. She then uses Ninpou Fuusajin! (Dust Wind!) to keep Sasuke pinned to a tree.

Sasuke soon realizes he must do something about her fan and uses Katon Housenka no Jutsu! (Fire Element, Balsam Spread Fire) to shoot fireballs at Temari. She dodges, but he follows with Katon Goukakyuu no Jutsu (Fire Element, Blazing Fireball) and sends a targeted fire stream at her. She counters with Sickling Wind, but as he dodges, he slips on her dust created from Dust Wind and falls. She then hits him with two kunai. Of course, it’s a replacement along with an explosion tag, and Temari is thrown backwards. Sasuke then heads after Kankuro and Gaara.

Meanwhile, Orochimaru reveals his younger body to the Third. Angry, Sarutobi tells him that was the reason he couldn't appoint him Hokage. They then flash back to the past. The Third raids Orochimaru's research facility based on reports that a number of villagers have gone missing recently. They suspect Orochimaru was behind the killings, and learn that he was working on a forbidden technique. Orochimaru's dream was to master all techniques and understand everything in this world. However, that requires a serious time commitment, and even if he was to master everything, that knowledge would eventually die with him. So he started researching how he might achieve immortality to keep his mind in this world forever.

And once Orochimaru kills Sarutobi, nothing will stop him from transferring his mind into Sasuke's body. The First uses a wood technique to fill the dome up with a massive tree, as Sarutobi realizes what a horrible mistake it was to let Orochimaru live back then. As his sensei, he really wanted to believe that Orochimaru would turn out ok, but that night in the lab, when he had summoned Enma and destroyed the research facility, he didn't have the heart to kill him.

Sarutobi vows that he will now correct his past mistake. He uses Shadow Replication and then prepares the Fourth’s Death God technique. The Second uses Genjutsu, Kokuangyou no Jutsu! (Illusionary Technique, Absolute Darkness) and the entire fighting dome goes pitch black. Sarutobi, meanwhile, remembers each of his villagers and gains the strength to do what he must. He will prepare the Fourth's secret technique that even Orochimaru doesn't know - Fuuinjutsu Shiki Fuujin! (Sealing Technique, Demonic Soul Seal).

Naruto Episode 71: Absolutely Incomparable! A Hokage-Level Battle!

The battle we’ve all been waiting for - the Third vs. Orochimaru, the First and the Second - finally begins, and my god is it beautiful! The artists seemed to go all Princess Mononoke, so this episode has this overarching darkness unlike any other Naruto. It’s episodes like this that really makes Naruto worth watching!

Temari checks the ground and determines that Sasuke's not far behind. To buy some time, she'll set a few traps. Sasuke advances stealthfully until he inadvertently sets one off and it explodes nearby.

Meanwhile, Orochimaru prepares the First and Second to attack Sarutobi. Edo Tensei requires a live human sacrifice to tie the dead souls to this world. The bodies of the First and Second are formed from the sacrificed bodies' souls. Orochimaru must then kill off their personalities by embedding tags into each of their heads. Once finished, the two standing before him are no longer the First and Second Sarutobi knew, but Orochimaru's lethal puppets who can only do his bidding.

The battle begins when the First and Second each take a side of Sarutobi. The First attacks first, with the Second following up. Sarutobi defends and then attacks with Katon, Karyuu Endan! (Fire Dragon Flame Missile). A flame shoots from his mouth. The Second, skillful with Water, counters with Suiton, Suijinheki! (Water Element, Water Wall). He then attacks with Suiton, Suishouha! (Water Element, Water Wave) to send a large wall of water at Sarutobi. The Third counters with earth shield, Doton, Doryuuheki! (Earth Element, Earth Wall), just in time to avoid the flood waters, but the First follows up with a few attacks of his own.

The Second's not finished yet and uses a water technique to pull Sarutobi underneath the surface, but again, he is able to counter. The First uses the opportunity to summon his secret technique, Mokuton Hijutsu Jakai Koutan (Secret Tree Element Technique, Birth of the Trees). A large tree emerges from the First's chakra and captures Sarutobi in its branches.

Struggling to move, Sarutobi musters up enough room to summon Monkey God King Enma, who is quite amused to find Sarutobi in such a mess. He then chides Sarutobi for not killing Orochimaru when he had the chance so many years ago.

Sarutobi commands Enma to change into the Kongou Nyoi! (Free Forming Diamond Pole) as the First and Second race to stop him. Sarutobi manages to free himself and with the pole, faces Orochimaru.

Not wanting to be outdone, Orochimaru opens his mouth and spits up the sword of Kusanagi, a powerful sword that can cut through just about anything. The two go at it for a bit, while the First and Second make a secondary assault, distracting Sarutobi and giving Orochimaru the opportunity to knock the Third back.

Orochimaru stands over the Third's body, taunting him. A tear forms in Sarutobi's eye. But the Third won't give up just yet. Enma grabs Orochimaru's neck while Sarutobi is able to attach explosion tags onto the First and Second, blowing off several of their limbs. Unfortunately, that doesn't stop them too long, as their limbs reform quickly.

Orochimaru then reveals the secret he's been working on since his youth. He's learned the forbidden technique to transfer bodies. He then pulls off his old face, revealing a particularly freaky young, boyish face.

Back in the forest, Sasuke catches up to the sand siblings.

Naruto Episode 70: Coward No. 1: Its Toublesome, But Ive Got to Do It!!

Sakura, Naruto, and Shikamaru head after Sasuke as several sound nins pursue. Pakkun warns that 9 nins are after them, and tells them to speed up. He then stops and tells the nins to move backwards on their own footsteps to make it look like they’ve just stopped. Hopefully that will buy them some time. It doesn’t, and the nins start gaining on them.

Shikamaru starts talking about ambushing them to level the playing field a bit. He explains that there are two conditions - 1) the runner must move noiselessly, and must discover the enemy first, and 2) they must secure a location to catch the pursuers off guard and inflict critical damage to them and then quickly conceal themselves in that location. Otherwise, these jounin+ level nins trained by Orochimaru will surely annihilate them. With Pakkun’s nose, their familiarity with the territory, they might just be able to pull off something. However, it is possible that the pursuing nins might actually know the terrain and have been preparing for awhile. Shikamaru concludes that given their team is made up of an idiot (Naruto), a female nin with no special techniques (Sakura), a dog, and a big coward (himself), they must device an operation that looks like an ambush - one person will stay behind and set up things to look like an ambush and stop them.

Shikamaru then volunteers to play the decoy… he is the one who has the highest chance of pulling this off and surviving. Besides, that’s what his technique, Shadow Bind, is for. Sakura immediately worries that he’ll run away, but Naruto has complete faith that Shikamaru would never betray them.

Meanwhile, Shikamaru is able to throw off his pursuers with fake paw prints, and soon catches 8 nin in Shadow Imitation. Unfortunately for him, he doesn't have much chakra left, and the ninth is still on the loose somewhere. After having his 8 bound nins attack, he learns the position of the ninth, but doesn't quite have enough chakra to reach. He recounts how he just wants to be paid normally as a ninja. To marry an average looking girl and have 2 kids, so he can retire from his ninja job when his daughter gets married and his son gets a job. Then he could play shogi and go all day and die of old age before his wife.

Just as Shikamaru reaches his chakra limit, Asama shows up and takes out all nine.

Naruto Episode 69: Ive Been Waiting For This! Its An A-Rank Mission!!

Kakashi sends Sakura, Naruto, and Shikamaru on an A-rank mission after Sasuke. He summons his dog, Pakkun, to follow Sasuke's scent. Sakura quickly wakes up Naruto, but when she turns to Shikamaru, she notices he's only pretending to sleep. Gai punches a hole in the stadium wall and commands the three and Pakkun to hurry. From the distance, Shino also overhears the commotion and heads off as well.

Meanwhile, Orochimaru and Sarutobi prepare to fight undisturbed inside their barrier fortress. The Third uses Ninpou, Kawara Shuriken (tile shuriken) to pull tile from the roof and hurl it at Orochimaru. Orochimaru counters by calling Hidden Snake Hands. His tongue turns into a snake and bites Sarutobi, but Sarutobi is quick to use a replacement technique and counters Orochimaru from behind with Doton, Doryuu Taiga! (Earth Element, Moving Land River). A flood of mud forms under Orochimaru’s feet, sending him sliding backwards. To aid the attack, Sarutobi does Doton, Doryuudan! (Earth Element, Earth Dragon Missile) and Karyuudan! (Fire Dragon Missile) to form an earth/fire attack that looks like a mud dragon head that attacks while Sarutobi spits fire.

The Third then gets serious, ripping off his Hokage attire to reveal his ninja outfit, and the two pick up speed. Sarutobi uses Shuriken, Kagebunshin no Jutsu (Shuriken Shadow Replication) to send several shurikens flying at Orochimaru, who counters with his forbidden summon, Kuchiyose, Edo Tensei (Summoning, Reincarnation to the Impure World) to summon the First and Second Hokage’s caskets as a shield. As the third casket is rising, Sarutobe realizes he must stop the Fourth Hokage from being summoned and becoming one of Orochimaru’s puppets or it will be impossible for him to win. He does, but battling the First and Second will be challenging enough.

Meanwhile, in class, the kids stare out the window sensing something weird is happening. Konohamaru notices rings around the sun and remembers what his grandpa told him - that rainbow rings were the sign of snakes and are bad omens. Iruka soon calls an evocation drill and the kids head up to the mountain hideaway.

The First and Second are amazed that Orochimaru was able to use Edo Tensei, a forbidden technique, to summon them. Still, they have no choice but to fight Sarutobi when commanded
