The characters of .hack //Legend of the Twilight

Aura

Aura is the girl in white who gives Shugo his bracelet and sends him back into the game. She's still a mystery to us, but hopefully we'll learn more about her.

Balmung of Soten

One of the characters that seems to oversee the game. He appears to be similar to Subaru in the tv series, but he actually fights. He is able to create quests & insert his own code, such as that which would allow him to enjoy a nice drink of saki. He plays a significant role in the game .hack//infection.

Hitaru

Hitaru is low level character that Shugo meets up with. She offered to watch another character's Poochi, and in the process, the Poochi got sick. Together, she and Shugo are able to get the Wing of Phoenix to save the Poochi.

Kamui

Kamui is head of the Knights of War, a CC Corporation operation to eliminate players that aren't following the rules.

Mileyu

Mileyu is a girl who follows the twins through the game. She hunts down rare items and is intrigued by the appearance of the legendary characters.

Ouka of Shinken

Ouka is one of the most powerful warriors in the game. She apparently was trapped in wolf form until Shugo set her free and now has taken quite a liking to him.

Reki

Reki is Balmung's right hand man and one of his information sources.

Rena

Rena is the younger of the twins and anxious to meet up with her brother in The World. She thinks it’s ironic that the twins were both winners in the contest, but really enjoys her character Black Rose. She also is interested in the super-cool Barumonk of Soten who came to her rescue.

Sanzuro

Sanzuro is a high level character, who appears to be the guardian of Hitaru & later is appointed by Barumonk to watch over Rena and Shugo.

Shugo

Shugo is the elder of the twins. He claims that he ‘outgrew’ the World when he entered Junior High, but when he won the chance to play the legendary character, Kite, he jumped back in the game. He tends to be one of those gamers who would rather learn by doing then spend time reading the instructions.

Fooly Cooly

Many people dislike this anime but I like it because it's different than most other shows. Reading these episode summaries we help you understand if this is your kind of show.

Episode 2: Fire Starter

Mamimi saw a god the other day. He helped an abandoned kitten. The blacked winged angel is the god that only she can see.

Mamimi waits for Takkun at his school. He reprimands her for coming by as Takkun’s friends look on fairly interested. Mamimi makes a scene.

Takkun goes to the hospital. Haruka (Vespa woman) confirms that he’s lost his brain. His head is completely empty. He has, however, started growing a new horn, this time on the back of his head. The last one turned into a robot that lives in his house. He blames all this on her running over him with her bike. She introduces herself as Haruhara Haruka, age 19. She’s a housekeeper at Takkun’s house. She transforms from her nurse’s outfit to one with small, white wings on the back and holding her electric guitar - her version of a Galaxy Patrol Officer. Takkun comments unenthusiastically that’s a dumb name for a band. He then asks how the robot that came out of his head can take xrays, and she answers that it’s a Medical Meccanica robot. Between Samejimi Mamimi and Haruhara Haruko, there are a lot of lies floating around him. He’s not sure what’s truth anymore.

The next day, Takkun’s father takes the robot outside. People and cars disappear in front of them. His father goes off on a rant about how eveRyune’s buying mecha anime. Takkun ignores him, commenting that he wrote a book on Eva at one point.

Mamimi is playing with a kitten she named Takkun under the bridge. Takkun comes up and she asks him if he has any food. He asks her if she saved a stray cat, and she labels herself a protector of the weak, a god of the black flames, Cantido-sama. He asks if that’s a game, and she answers yes, one she’s playing right now.

Haruko decides to take matters into her own hands and crashes her Vespa into the Medical Meccanica factory. Weird things keep happening at the factory. There was a fire started by arson and a nurse at the hospital was tied up and had her clothes stolen. Takken shows up, and she tells them that he’s her guardian.

Mamimi is waiting for god to arrive and spots a halo and angel wings. Looks like Takkun’s robot escaped and is roaming about outside. It climbs a tower, makes a sudden noise to scare away birds, and then flies into the heavens. She is convinced it is a god.

Takkun, Mamimi, and Haruko look for the robot. Mamimi saw him at the mini market earlier reading Delabe. Suddenly, there is an explosion and the robot descends. Mamimi calls out to it - Cantido-sama. Haruko scolds it for being late. Grandpa scolds it too for not bringing back exactly what he asked for. Mamimi tells them they shouldn’t treat gods that way.

Takkun and his classmates decide to investigate the strange happenings down by the factory. One says it was arson, another says UFOs, and one thinks it was a stressed out housewife tired of doing household chores. One asks if it was really UFOs, why wouldn’t they burn down something more high-profile. Like a school? Apparently, before the kids went to school, someone did burn down a school. They look down in the river to see a shoe floating. Further in the distance, a Shinden High School girl cleans her uniform. Takkun’s classmate saw some girls bullying her around the other day. Takken sees it’s Mamimi.

Takken and Mamimi walk back. She drops her video game, called Fire Starter, as she lights a cigarette. In the game, no one knows the origins of the city of devils, Endsville, but once it was created, it prospered and slowly took over the world. There’s a rehash of the game and the events of the episode that culminate as someone is looking for the person who keeps starting fires. It may be Mamimi…

Takkun goes looking for her. He remembers that there was a fire in elementary school when he was six. His brother saved Mamimi. She calls him the protector of the weak, Canti-sama. There were rumors that it was arson, but no one knows the source. That was the day when his brother and Samejima Mamimi met.

More chanting of furi kuri… Mamimi sits in circle lit by cigarettes set like candles. Takkun returns the game to her. She confesses that she started the fire. She wanted the world to go away, but even when she tries to burn it, it still remains. She asks the robot to bless her with his kiss. Takkun’s horn starts growing and another robot emerges from his head. The robot attacks his first robot until Vespa woman steps in to fight. Mamimi is caught in the crossfire. Takkun tries to save her, but the 2nd robot grabs him and eats him. Mamimi asks how he could have eaten Takkun - he can’t be a god. There’s more fighting and an explosion. The saves Mamimi and then spits out Takkun. Sirens come toward them, but Takkun decides to stay with Mamimi…

Episode 1: Fooly Cooly

A girl and a boy, Takkun, sit talking. The girl swings a baseball bat, while the boy sits doing homework. She throws down the bat and starts caressing the boy. He tells her she smells like smoke, but she denies smoking. He asks her why she always wants to do this kind of stuff. She tells him that she needs to do it or she’ll overflow. They fall to the ground.

A voiceover of Takkun explains that only the ordinary happens here. There’s a huge factory nearby town owned by Medical Mechanica, a maker of medical machines. When it arrived, the adults were excited, but then the smoke from the factory spread into the town.

After their make out session, Takkun and the girl walk away. She hands him what’s left of her beverage (beer?) and he throws the can down. In a very dramatized scene, a person on a moped drives past, hits the can, and skids into Takkun. He runs up to the body, calling him Taro-kun, and declares him dead. The girl tells him the boy’s name is Naoto-kun, but she calls him Takkun for short. The girl on the moped is flipping out, not understanding that the boy isn’t Taro and thinking that she killed. She is bouncing all over the street. She then attempts CPR, and when he comes to, she realizes he’s not Taro, hits him with her guitar to send him flying down the street, and then drives off.

At home, Takkun examines the bump on his head, which looks like a strange horn now. If he pushes it in, he looks normal. At school the next day, he wears a bandage over it to keep it in. The rest of his classmates think something is up. One asks if he’s heard about the Vespa Woman, the wasp woman. She has a guitar and rides a bike. If you do something bad, the mark of the devil will appear once she’s stung you. Takkun’s friends then observe the hicky on his neck and make fun of him… A voiceover of Takkun explains that this was ordinary. It was ordinary for him to see Samejimi Mamimi.

Takkun decided to go to the hospital. The Vespa Woman taunts him on the way, asking him what happened after she left. At the hospital, Takkun is diagnosed with Flictonic Klipple Waver Syndrome (FLCL), an adolescent psychological skin hardening syndrome. The nurse explains that it is a common affliction where children grow horns from trying too hard. He declares that it’s a lie. She admits it’s a lie and reveals her true form as the Vespa Woman as she tries to smack him with her guitar. He manages to escape the hospital

Mamimi calls and tells him she wants him to see a photo she has. He tells her he doesn’t care and that she should go out with her friends. At dinner, Takkun is appalled to see the Vespa Woman with his father and grandfather. His father introduces her as Haruhara and that she will be working as their housekeeper. There’s another crazy scene where the action follows a black and white manga as the family asks about each other’s business and learns of the high school girl Takkun has been making out with. (There’s an argument about furi furi or kuri kuri and being a pervert that I didn’t follow all that well.)

Later, Takkun sits in the bathroom washing and overhears the conversation downstairs. The adults are discussing the factory. When Takkun finishes, he goes back to his room where the Vespa Woman sits playing her guitar. She wants the top bunk. In a gradually intensifying scene, he asks who she is. She replies that she’s an alien. Unamused, he brings up her nurse stunt from earlier that afternoon. She asks what’s under the bandage. He asks what’s happening to him. She tries to take the bandage off. He smacks her hand away and tells her to go to his father. Silence then breaks the build up as they stand apart. He asks what she wants. She replies that he’s the first she’s met. He tells her the top bunk is his brothers, so no one is allowed to sleep there. He asks about his brother. He went to America to play baseball. She then crawls into bed with Takkun claiming if the top is his brother’s bunk, there’s no where else to sleep.

Annoyed, Takkun walks down the stairs to find another place to sleep. On his way, his father stops him and asks if he’s really against having Haruko stay with them. He tells him to do what he wants. His father then looks over photos of Takkun getting run over. Takkun recognizes them as Mamimi’s and asks when she came. His father answers that she came asking for the crusts and leftover bread. He supposes that she is poor. With that, Takkun runs out of the house. Mamimi sits by herself smoking along the road. Takkun runs up to her. She was apparently seeing Takkun’s brother, but hasn’t heard from him. She caresses Takkun then suddenly grasps her head proclaiming that she’s about to overflow. There are explosions and Takkun’s horn grows into two separate mech entities which start fighting each other. The red one takes out the white one (maybe?). Vespa woman rides in on her bike and strikes the mech in command, smashing it. Takkun then comments that she looks like his brother…

The next day, Takkun was able to take the bandage off. The horn was gone, and the mech now worked for their family. He meets Mamimi and drinks the beverage she offers him this time (beer?).
